So happy to see our Manipuri Ras Leela in the video. Our state Manipur has lots of traditions, culture and communities. It's basically a small version of India 😂 and this dance is from one of the communities which follows Hinduism. It's Lord Krishna and his beloved Radha dancing with Gopis (women who loves and follows Lord Krishna). The skirt like thing worn by the women is called Potloi. Radha will wear a different color than the rest of the Gopis to let us know which one is her. It's pretty heavy and hard to move around. It doesn't touch our legs when worn so when I performed this dance(only once) I forgot to lift it up and I tripped on the steps while walking around. I didn't bother to get up cuz I was laughing too hard 🤣 mum came running to cover me cuz u can't fold the skirt as it's made out of thick cardboard, clothe woven over it, hand stitched every small gems and decorations. We don't speak Hindi, we have lots of languages in our state and I think I might be the only Meitei here on this channel (one of the communities in the state)

Kadhakali is a major form of classical Indian dance. It's one of the difficult art form to learn.
Basically kadhakali means = Kadha ( story in Malayalam)+ Kali ( play ). They are telling a story . Kadhakali 's roots are in the temple folk arts ( Krishnanattam ) .
Kadhakali is a very interesting art. I'm from Kerala and that's my favourite art form.
Music is central to a Kathakali performance. It sets the mood and triggers emotions resonant with the nature of the scene. The text of the play or the ballad is sung by two singers in the background. The lead singer is called the ponnani and the assistant the shinkiti. They sing in manipravalam ( sankrit + Malayalam)
They use chengila and ilathalam to maintain the rhythm. Many musical instruments ( other than ilathalam & chengila )are used in Kathakali. Three major drums found are Maddalam(barrel-shaped), Chenda (cylindrical drum played with curved sticks) and Idakka (Idakka, hourglass-shaped drum with muted and melodious notes played when female characters perform).
Make up is another interesting part in kadhakali. The facial painting are called mukhathezhuth. ( Mukham = face + ezhuth = writing/ painting). Actually, it's not really paint. The artists use various minerals to paint their face.
Kathakali make up is an elaborate process lasting for 3 hours. It helps in giving a super human look to the actors. All the colours used in the make-up are obtained from natural substances and herbs. For example, the red and yellow colours are made by powdering stones like Chaayilyam and Manayola respectively. A mixture of lime and rice flour serves for white. The green colour is produced by mixing Manayola and Neelam (blue). Coconut oil is used as the base for mixing these stone powders. Another stone, Chenchilyam is powdered and applied in order to protect the skin from burns. Kanmashi or Kajal (the black substance) is prepared by burning gingelly oil. Kumkumam or saffron is also used for the make-up. Kadhakali artists should learn to do their own make up. Because the most part of the facial painting are done by artists them selves with the help of a mirror. Chuttikkaran ( make up man )puts the Chutti(a series of white ridges built up from the chin to the either side of the cheek) which forms the second stage of make-up. Atlast artist use chundappoo to change their eye colour.
Once the facial makeup is over and just before starting the body costume, the performer need to put the flower seed in the eyes. He places his eyeballs up, and gently put the flower seed in lower eyelid. Then he gently pinches the lower eyelid and drag forward. The flower seed goes inside and stays there. The performer closes the eyes and roll his eyeballs. When he/she opens his eyes, the eyes turns red in colour.
Logic of red eyes in Kathakali
The facial makeup of Kathakali is so colorful and a white eye doesn't look good. The red eye adds an unearthly ambience to the face. Eye movements along with hand and body movements are unavoidable in Kathakali as it completes the beauty and elegance of Natya and Nritha.

@@hariharan8988 The five major Veshams (name of a make-up) in Kathakali are Kathi (Knife), Pacha (Green), Thaadi (Beard), Minukku (radiant) and Kari (Black). The noble and the divine, appear in Green. Kathi represents the arrogant and evil, however, with a vein of gallantry.
Chuvanna Thaadi (Red Beard) denotes vicious characters, while white stands for divinity. Kari personifies evil personalities.
Minukku vesham usually represent women characters or saints.
There are sub types also , like kathi vesham is in 2 types .
Ninam is a rare vesham in kadhakali. It's scary. Ninam means blood.
In Narakasuravadham ( a mythological plot) kadhakali Jayanthan, son of Indran disfigures her by cutting her nose and breasts. In this scene, she comes to see Narakasuran with her body soaked in blood, flowing from her nose and breasts. This scene is mentioned in Kathakali as 'Ninam' . Preparation should start a day before to play ninam and it's kinda scary. So people usually don't prefer those.

    • @thehawkseye3412
      @thehawkseye3412 2 года назад +5

Eh... no. Kathak is much older than bhakti period. Kathak used to tell devotional and legendary tales from Hindu texts through dance. But in medieval times regimes changed to Islamic ones. Temples and kingdoms that supported those themes were gone. Due to change in the court culture of the times, Shringar rasa ( what you called love) became more prevalent than devotional aspect. Krishna was of course popular diety but it was the Ras leela aspect that still got fans. When British suppressed it due to missionary influence kathak faced extinction a second time. At first they tried to make them sing bible tales instead of Hindu legends. But that was resisted. After than it was full on attack. Missionaries tried to ban it. The katahk dancer were called natch girls and they wrote articles like" all that's wrong with Hindu women"... the tickle effect was so that even Hindus started looking down on them. ( the British education system took care of the). After all we even adopted dowry system from them.
They demeaned the kathak dancers so much that It almost disappeared barring some Tawaifs still performing it. Again they would be more focused on shringar rasa but we can still thank them to keep it alive in some form.
In such an atmosphere one family- Durga Prasad Misra in a bid to save the art, came to Lucknow in 1800s. He taught dancing to his own sons tho are considered to be pioneers of Lucknow Gharana or Kalika- Bindadin gharana. Under patronage of Wazid Ali shah who himself was an art connoisseur and actively participated finally Kathak managed to survive as a respectable art form. This gharana kept the art going through it's male members. Jairpur and Banaras gharana were established by the members of this family only.
You may have heard of Birju maharaj- he was a legendary dancer himself but he was also revered so much for that reason.

Oh, you still haven't seen very popular dance forms like Garba, Dandiya, Ghoomar, Bihu, Rouf and many others. They're all vastly different, representing various parts of our country. And these are just the popular ones; there are countless others.
Folk dances are often not inspired by deity worship but rather by celebration, harvesting or some festival. Then there are dances for motivating warriors before war and dances for celebrating war victory. Some dances invoke spirituality by their simplicity, like the Sufi Dervish. Many dances here also celebrate small enriching moments of life, all human emotions, including sadness and melancholy. Many dances are also performed on the demise of someone and many on the birth of a child.
Every emotion is celebrated in this country. Some are refined and attested to texts and techniques, some tell stories and explain myths, and some are just straight out of the heart.
But, it's already a lot for one episode. I love you guys. Bye ;)

Kathakali is story telling dance style. It started off as a temple dance form known as Krishnattam as it was mostly story telling of leelas (plays) of Lord Krishna. It started using other stories from the Puranas by 17th Century and morphed into today's Kathakali. Traditional Chinese opera is derived from Kathakali. In fact, they tried to absorb even the makeup & story telling style.

The articulated hands you talked about in the satriya dance especially the flute form is actually the flute playing representation of lord Krishna. This is a dance form worshipping lord Krishna. Since our great scholar and spiritual ascendant of lord Krishna, great Sri Sri Sankardev was a follower and ultimate devotee of lord Krishna and he preaches non-idol worshiping practices which most of us Assamese people follow and practice, satriya dance form popularised under him which were danced in “namghar”, worshipping place to lord Krishna introduced by great Sankardev. When Buddhism arose, Hinduism wasn't a collective whole but it was divided into sects like Shaivism, Vaishnavism and Shaktism...also Buddha was a Shaivaite, in those times, religion itself was very liberal and father and son could have totally different religions. Also there are huge differences between the two and one of the major reasons why Jainism and Buddhism got very popular at that time was due to dominant caste and varna differences in sects. It was later when Hinduism got its collective form that Buddha and Mahavir were called Vishnu's avatars but it was rejected by the respective priests and leaders of these religions.

Non Indians don't understand that Hinduism is not just a religion it's a lifestyle and its essentially the root of all Indian culture,, doesn't matter what your religion is if you're living in India some aspects of Hinduism are always impacting your life whether it's thru music, dance, festivals, clothing etc. And the reason is that Hinduism goes as far back as the existence of our country. If indian civilization is 10k years old the religion and it's impact is just as old. That's why like u said that south America is mostly catholic but it doesn't effect their culture like this, its cause the presence of that religion is only a few hundred years old in that region hence its not completely part of their culture or who they are as people it's just something some people practice or believe in.

The common binding factor between all major dances is the scripture- NatyaShastra. Bharatnatyam and southern forms of classical dances is considered the purest form of classical and the oldest surviving without deviating too much from the commonly shared principles of natyashastra. Northern and Eastern forms have a persian influences as well.
Moreover, all forms adhere to the tala and raga under both Hindustani and Carnatic forms of music. Mostly, all forms will have representations of Shiva or Krishna. More intense ones for Shiva, Gentle ones for Krishna.
That's the maharashtrian way of wearing a saree (wrt Lavani). Also, Lavani is more erotic in its form. Bollywood is hindi industry based in maharashtra, so yes you would find Kathak, Lavani influences, but bollywood has developed its own creole form.

Bhangra is a folk dance of the state of Punjab. Traditionally, men perform Bhangra on the beats of ‘Dhol’( drum kind of instrument) and women do ‘Gidha’ which is also a folk dance of Punjab. During Gidha women recite ‘boliyan’ - words used to describe a situation or taunt in a jokingly way. But, nowadays women also take part in Bhangra. However, men don’t do Gidha and it is still female oriented.
Though, there is another variation of Bhangra called ‘Malwai Gidha’ which is a mix of Bhangra and Gidha but is performed by males only. This dance form also uses boliyan. Hope, this helps!!

Mohiniyattam is the enchantress from heaven , she wears literal gold thread and Kaithari , she is made to look perfect from make up and her movement slow paced and seductive like I said chasing sargathmakatha or surrealism. Back to Kathakali it didn't originate in temples like the other dances did , gods were thought to be heroes at those times and they were celebrated on gatherings courtrooms and theatres, the dress , the make up the elaborate head piece and majestic looks all corresponds to what man perceives a god to look like , again the surrealism elements. Points to Note Down:- India has exported it's culture to china since 3500 years, and later in Japan. Whole of SE Asia was built on Indian culture. Angkor World's biggest temple is found in SE Asia.
According to research till date evidences and archaeology says that Our history is atleast 9000-11000 years old.
India (Bharat) is much older than Greek or Egypt. We used to trade with them.
Bharat started to decline from 7th century onwards due to Turkic Invasion (Mughal's). Lots of fight, Culture being destroyed, Universities being burnt, Many people taken as slaves, things happened and continued for almost 1000 years till the British came. Then British did the same, engineered serious famine, killed lots of people, exported everything from India to Britain (worth 45 trillion USD in today's time), making British Empire the richest and then left India in a very poor state because of resistance and WWII blow and various things.
India lost Afghanistan during Mughal times while Pakistan & Bangladesh(then East Pakistan) were seperated at Independence in 1947.
Today Romani people or Gypsies you see are actually Indians, were taken as slaves and when Invaders were unable to manage them because of their large population, so they let them loose, but didn't allow them to come back to India. So they are still moving across Europe and UK and facing various challenges, still not settled. Some of the slaves were from musicians and dancers community for entertainment purpose. Romani language is similar to Indian languages.

The characters have a common name apart from the role they portray as per the story. Here the green face man character is called 'pacha', (phonetic transcription pʌtʃʌ) literally meaning green and is a good character. And the other is a female character called as 'minuk' (transcription mɪnuk) literally means something like ' retouch or touch up' The instrument can be a Chenda (tʃendʌ - a type of drum), Madhalam ( along cylindrical drum) and can't be seen on the screen.

Sikh people cane into being from Bhakti Yug (in Hinduism)and from Sufi Yug( in Muslims). It was reformed form any good things from both religions. Moreover it was not a religion in the beginning.Sikh people came out as saint soldiers against oppression and brutality done by the Mughal rulers against Hindus of India.A long history of Shikhs is there.

To answer your question at 22:00 one of the main foundation of all classical dances of India is actually a millennium old book known as 'Natya Shastra' written by Sage Bharata where all the rules are mentioned. Its importance is so monumental that it is called a fifth Veda.

The reason why dance, religion and music is so intertwined together in India is because of how old everything is. Hinduism is the oldest relegion so the dances, music developed together. The land is as old as the religion. There's no seperation. That's why some people say that Hinduism is a way of life rather than a religion. In western world religion and dance/music developed in different time periods. Christianity began very late. That's why it has very little influence in folk dances and music.

21:00 Because its all based on Bharata muni's naatya shastra 500BCE (saint Bharata's science of preforming arts).
That is the foundation on which all Indian dance is based up on, then regional flavors develop from that base form in to different varieties.

21:50 You already had the answer. It's because all of them essentially come from the Natyashastra written by Bharat Muni!
Also just like how you were explaining that Ballet has different elements, each of the Indian dance forms also has variations. Like for Kathak dance itself, there are different gharanas

Dear Waleska and Effra, Its great to hear your healthy banter and lively interpretations
    Your Comments:
whether Nepal was a part of India?
It depends upon how far you want to go back in to history. If u see India as an european concept of Nation with shared political, defense, foreign policy - then Nepal was not a part of India.
But India existed for thousands of years before British occupation and consequent emergence of independent nation (as defined by european definition) was in 1947.
Before that If you go in the Ramayan/ Mahabharat era - Then it was called Bharat varsh.
More Precisely, It was Jambudvipa, (area - called Jambu dvip), Bharat Varsh - or Bharat Rashtra (Rashtra is not equal to Nation as there was no concept of one language/ one religion/ one Defense/ foreign policy or one state hood)., but rather a shared cultural and philosophy and Sanatan way of life that connected people living under different states having their own uniqueness yet free movements and strong connections of between each other and also marriages occurring between different states. there were 16 MahaJanpadas ( Major states ruled by their own state-head, some of them had democratic election of the state head and some followed the hereditary lineages). Under this system, Nepal then was ruled under the Mithila kingdom and Kushala kingdoms and many other smaller once. Later on Nepal was also a part of the Magadh empire. Strongest example of neatly chronicled history is Gautam Budhdha who was the Prince of Koshala, his original name being Prince Sidhdharth. He left his kingdom and attained Nirvana in Bodhgaya, in present day Bihar, India.
Similarly - Afganistan was part of Bharat Varsh / Rashtra - then called as Gandhar
Pakistan - was then divided in many smaller states like Sindh - Then called Sindhudesh, Punjab - united west and east was the "Panchnad" state, Khyber pakhtunkhwa / Norhwest frontier province - was then called Pushkalavati
    Burma was called - Bramhdesh,
Kumbhoj is current day Combodia was also a part of Bharat varsh.
    Shyamdesh - current day Thailand
Bhutan - Known as Mahapradesh during the Mahabharata period.
Bangladesh and Pakistan were part of politically defined India under British rule that was mercilessly torn out on religious grounds causing the largest displacement/ refugeehood and largest human tragedy even greater than WWII
But mind u, at no point of time have there been any aspirations of being a part of a current day political Nationhood . there have NEVER been any imperial idea of annexation to Indian Nation hood.
We believe in the individual uniqueness of each region, their right to determine their political rulings but still acknowledge the shared history, Philosophical, cultural and dharmic way of life and common ancesstary. Case of Kashmir and POK is different as it is an integral part of Indian nationhood but attacked, destroyed, and raped in 1948 by you know who.

Yes , Lord Krishna holds a flute so the posture representing him is like that
1:29 Manipuri generally depicts "rasa dance"- the dance of love between Lord Krishna and godess Radha
