These first two YES absolutely. Trying to fight back against misinformation from a MD is so hard because they're seen on IG and TikTok as the pinnacle of all skincare education, but there are plenty of other people with different kinds of expertise (cosmetic chemistry, R&D) who have more up to date information, ESPECIALLY when it comes to sunscreen.

I feel like we live in a weird age where no one no longer knows what is real and what is enhanced or completely fake. I see this a lot when I watch a skincare routine or review where the person is clearly using a filter, yet you'll see loads and loads of comments on how great their skin looks and how young the person looks. It's even weirder when I see people comment on how great someone's skin looks while they are wearing very heavy makeup. I feel like we as consumers shoot ourselves in the foot by consuming so much of what is clearly fake with the expectation that we can achieve it by buying their products or doing what some influencer did.

I routinely see my normal PCP (an internal medicine MD) and my board certified dermatologist… there were many times when I’d tell my derm that my pcp recommended to treat my skin conditions a certain way, and my derm would straight up say “that’s not wrong advice, but we don’t recommend that.”
That opened my eyes to what I started seeing in the physician-skincare-social medial trends… there really is a difference between what dermatologists post/recommend vs. what other non-dermatologist physicians post/recommend.
I can dream, but when I go on social media, I want value, not just noise.
I won’t share her name, but I unfollowed an internal med MD that runs her social media as a skincare social media account. I used to enjoy her posts but once I started realizing she accepted a ton of sponsorships and started promoting products of stuff the derm’s pages weren’t recommending (like, even promoting the DIY stuff) I hit unfollow. [and I’ve never seen any derm collab with her/recommend her/repost her like how the derms on social media do for each other, yet she has a massive following.]

DIY skincare is what got me interested in skincare to begin with. I had watched an interview where an actress mentioned that she used cucumber slices and teabags on her eyes to get rid of puffiness. And that sparked my interest as to what could be done and/or used to improve skin. But in my defense I was 11 years old and that was decades ago. I never would have thought to make my own sunscreen though. But I'm hoping that videos by knowledgeable Dr's, cosmetic chemists and others will get more and more traction. And that their videos will properly educate people.

For me having acne, I would rather buy fragrance free ingredients rather than tackle possible irritation just by trying products. It is a waste of money. Irritation could also lead to more acne. Formulation innovation unless side by side comparison with and without the "innovation" are doubtful and I'll fall into marketing claim unless there are studies about it.

Agreed! I’ve been so afraid to try products with fragrance even though I know I don’t typically have sensitive skin, I recently purchased a moisturizer with fragrance and my skin feels great! Skin care is so personal and that’s the fun part about it- it’s a self realization journey and it’s not monolithic what works for me could be terrible for you, but that’s the beauty of us all being so unique, God made so many different skin types and that’s something we should celebrate! - it should be something we enjoy not based on fear.

I'm pretty sure nowadays nobody actually takes any oaths and even if they do it has nothing to do with sponsorships, one can fully believe in the product and still get paid to talk about it, they are the ones choosing what sponsorship to take afterall. That's how people are compensated for their time and effort on social media, the price you pay to have all that information available to you at no monetary cost. I'm not sure what you mean by taking advantage of the profession but if it is just about purposefully using their title to spread misinformation - sure, but I don't believe there are those who are actually doing it on purpose. The ones that are are typically not doctors but people like the "medical medium" and what not.

  • @blackisntdarkenough

IMO it's best to ignore the people doing stupid things and spreading misinformation. They all operate under the principal of "any attention is good attention," so engaging with them, even as a corrective measure, just increases their reach and influence. I am not on insta or tik tok largely for this reason.

I like and appreciate your opinion on this topic. I have curly hair and if you follow some big curly influencers you will hear them preaching " no parabens, no silicones" all the time. I love skincare care and I was so confused why in SK is yes parabens and on haircare was absolutely NO. I had been learning from you, doctors and cosmetic formulators like Ramon and others how narrow minded is to go against parabens. When I tried to share articles with one of those curly influencers to possibly change her mind on parabens, she blocked me... anyway, all that to say, sometimes people don't want to change their opinions bc it's part of the core beliefs and they will continue spreading misinformation. 🙈

With the reviews it goes both ways. Due to influencers relationships with brands they are often hesitant to point out the negatives of products. The original First Aid Beauty sunscreen was pushed as a great product by influencers but nowhere was it mentioned that the product was gritty and made for an unpleasant experience to the point where the product was pulled from the market. Biossance Omega Repair Cream is touted as a great moisturizer but no influencers point out the offensive smell which can turn off some customers. I want to be informed of the upsides and downsides before buying a product.

The TikToks like the one you showed in your video really bug me. Especially when it's all drugstore products and affordable options. Many people, especially young and impressionable kids/teenagers, can't afford to spend $35 on a shampoo or a cleanser. These long lists of 'trash products' that many of us have in our bathrooms are all we have access to. Expensive doesn't always equal better, and even if the expensive option is better, that doesn't mean what you're using is bad or doesn't work.

Ingredients being labeled "pore clogging" typically don't have any scientific backing to prove a claim like that or come from decades old rabbit ear models, as you can imagine our skin is vastly different from rabbit ears. Practically any ingredient could break someone out there out while most people will be completely fine using it. I totally agreed with you on the fear mongering. Those are making it more and more difficult to formulate products that are effective and accessible to the consumers. Please, leave parabens, sulphates, silicones, petrolatum, and other ingredients alone! They are safe to use in cosmetics! At the end of the day, brands DO NOT want to get sued!
Another “beef” that I have with TikTok is when people diss affordable products (that works incredibly well) and recommend more expensive products. Take shampoos as an example. I’ve seen many Tiktok telling people to stop using brands like Dove, Pantene, etc. In fact, these brands come from companies who spend a tons of money on R&D. Also, realistically, there are people who cannot afford those “expensive” products. They need to take care of their families, but also need something to make them feel better, more refreshed. Bashing those affordable options, in my opinion, without properly backing it up is just unethical.

I completely agree with how fragrance has been unnecessarily demonized in skincare. For instance this dermatologist I used to follow, Dr. Dra...nvm, always rants about how parabens (for example) has been unfairly fearmongered while she's doing the exact same to fragrance by making the fuss out of even a small amount of fruit extract lol She also tends to jump to conclusion on products she never even used. And most of her over the top advice gives me the impression that she's talking to a patient with severe skin issues. I've seen pro makeup artists like Robert Welsh say that primer goes before sunscreen.

@@Bunny11344 I think the most important part is just having at least those 10 minutes between applications to make sure that the primer and your sunscreen are not just mixing on the skin but actually settle down, aside from that I would just try it both ways and see what seems to work better.

Sunscreen is the final step in your skin care routine. Then you are ready to begin makeup. So sunscreen, then primer.

Susan, I hear you & your points. But in reference to talc in products: do you know it's not harmful? Instead of just saying it's basically just fear-mongering, etc., are you sure it is not actually a problem?

First of all, great video ❤️ Very informative and brings it directly to the point👍🏻
Some influencers are honest and trustworthy. But most aren’t.
I’m sorry, but if you believe everything an influencer or a celebrity says about skincare or other topics then you’re gullible and naive.
Most of their posts are sponsored anyway.
And regarding the filters. I can’t understand how people can think that this is their real skin. You’re delusional if you’re really thinking celebrities look the way they portrait themselves 😂

It’s so hard to watch you now after being so deceitful about your own skin care line Naturium. I’m trying to move past it but I now know how easily it is for you to lie and it freaks me out. You lost your integrity during that time, it’s sad. I wish you didn’t do it because I used to find you intelligent and charismatic. Hope you don’t delete this, like you delete other comments that rightly criticise you

    • @JH-yg5oo

I see people continually bringing the Naturium launch up on her RUclips page or reviews for her products. She has apologized and I hope a lot of people have moved on from that. I can only speak for myself but if someone’s content offended me so much I would just unfollow/unsubscribe as opposed forcing myself to watch them.

@@JH-yg5oo her apology didn’t take accountability at all and just deflected that actual issues, plus she has deleted it. That’s not a real apology. I was a long time subscriber and it was a big betrayal to a lot of us. I am allowed to comment and make fair criticism towards a content creator that exploited her relationship with her subscribers and knowingly deceived us for greed. Especially since her “apology” didn’t address any of this and has been deleted. I don’t want this type of gross deception normalised.
