I am being presumptious but i think its a great idea that your including details written on the screen as your going along with your project .For those of us that are hard of hearing at times .Thankyou .
Other than the Gothic boxwood prayer bead skull this is the best wooden skull I’ve seen, I love that polish you put on it. And those renaissance miniatures were made by aliens if you ask me, so we humble earthlings shouldn’t necessarily use them to measure our success. With hard woods there is a trade off, roughing out is difficult but then you are able to add more detail and use the luster to your advantage to draw the eye from the rougher low spots, and your tools don’t have to be as finicky with keenness and bevel angles to not tear the grain or leave it fuzzy.
I absolutely love it - beautiful wood grain and fantastic detail and workmanship. I collect skulls and would love to have a piece like yours in my collection
Looks amazing Jim. Totally agree about people not knowing how much work goes into small items. I think it's much harder and takes longer to make miniature items. Well done!
Thank you very much Paul. Yes and making a 15 minute video on something that took quite a few hours really does nothing to dispel that notion. Cheers Jim
Thank you very much Graham. The foot pedal is very useful, the pedals are very cheap on eBay, just make sure you wire up the poles correctly. The pedal lead will work on other machines that do not have an NVR switch. Cheers Jim
Thank you very much. Difficult to say why skulls are fascinating, they are amazing structures, it must be something deep within us that draws us to them and they certainly have great significance in many cultures across the world. Cheers Jim
@@JimsonMakes I saw the huge amount of time you put into this little hard wood miniature.. and you have patience and skills to do such a good little gem.. 😊
Loved your video and the finished skull was fantastic I a few netsuke skulls and yours would look great with my others looking forward to watch your next video
Simply amazing... And your knowledge of anatomy is beyond impressive! It's the detail that sets this piece apart. I know it wasn't easy to film but I'm ever so grateful you did!
I feel bad for laughing but finally someone who understands how irritating it is to work on that sort of hard and dense wood! I know very little about woodcarving in general but i've always wanted to try whittling and been dipping my toes into it slowly but surely. Amazing skull! Worth the annoyance, i'm sure :D
Hi that's absolutely gorgeous I also bought myself a dremel because I wanted to create gothic style ornaments out of African black wood which is my absolute favourite exotic wood but it blunts the bits really quickly
Thank you very much Layla. African Blackwood is in the same family as this Kingwood, I have done carvings in both woods and yes they are great at blunting tools. I can’t decide whether it is better to by less of the more expensive bits or just buy lots of cheap ones off eBay and accept that they will need throwing away. Tungsten carbide tools certainly fair better. The Saburrtooth burrs are good for roughing out, then perhaps finish with steel burrs. Many thanks for watching Cheers Jim
I'm making a skull out of a branch of crepe myrtle. I just left it as the branch was and just started carving. I know it's easier, by blocking it first, but it's starting to take shape. I have the mouth open, and I'm working with the natural cracks in the wood. I might fill them with UV blue glowing epoxy. My skull is just about the size of the one you did. I can't wait to get it finished. I'm going to open the cheekbone away from the Jawbone. I'm just hoping it don't break. I really enjoyed watching you carve yours, and I wish I had been able to do that with mine. But when I finish it I'll share mine with you, and maybe we can talk about woodcarving. Thank you for sharing. I really enjoyed it.
Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my video. Your skull should come out great. One of my early miniature skulls I carved from a stick, the stick made a great handle to hold it whilst carving. I did consider hollowing out the cheek and zygomatic arch but decided not to mainly because I wanted it to be a tactile piece that people’s can pick up without risk of damage. I am just finishing a much more detailed skull carving at the moment, video coming very soon. Cheers Jim
@@JimsonMakes I will continue to watch you, and really enjoyed it. I understand, I hope mine won't get broken, but it for my brother, so when I'm no longer here. He'll have part of me. and it looks great. I literally just did a skull carving on a hickory hatchet handle to see how easy it went b4 I carve into a piece of desert ironwood.
yes indeed. I've been making sure to wear breathing protection with either a standard little dust mask, or a charcoal filter style gas mask. for the sawdust the smaller mask seems to work fine. I certainly don't want breathing problems later in life.
Very cool little piece. I am not much into hand carving so much, but that is a cool little skull. I am just trying to get my first lidded box completed. Its harder than I thought to get the lid to line up right.
@@JimsonMakes I would love to see a pine cone in a resin skull . But I still can't wait to get my own pine cones in resin been doing a lot of work with them trying to get the right colors trying a bunch of new things
