This Boatyard is in the Town of Warkworth. New-Zealand has a long history of Boatbuilding, it is beautiful to see these, Boatyards, uncomplicated and down to earth.
Until mr health and safety comes along with his over the top new regulations followed by mr regional council who wants hose down debris contained etc etc and next minute all too hard and unaffordable and a close down follows……very sad
My old youthful stamping ground. The ruins in the background is the Wilson Cement works. I spent summers swimming in the fresh water lake behind. I lived not far away in Pulham Rd. My Dad was a boat builder at Sandspit. My brothers and I used to paddle down the river to Dawsons Rd. Big eels live in the fresh water lake. They will come and check you out when you swim.
My Dad, Mum and I took our 33’ launch up the Mahurangi to Warkworth quay a couple of times in the 70s to the town quay in sight of the waterfall. If you want narrow and a similar trip, but with possibly stronger tidal. flow, you could try The Weiti up to Silverdale a bit further south. Back in the day these rivers both had cement works and other commodities transported out by scows which were sailed up. Flat bottomed and often over 60 foot long. The Puhoi river is another. My grandfather used to deliver the mail up there by boat in the 1920s. All these rivers are very tidal, but were navigable and essential travel routes for Pakeha and Māori settlements before reading infrastructure developed. Sadly, that’s a world that is long past but it was a cherished childhood.
50 years ago my friends and I used to camp in the old cement works ruins after spending the days out on the coast surfing, the lake was a great place to cool off, happy memories
Hi James, great to meet you while you were here, nice to see our Mardi Gras next to you. It took another week or so for us to get back in the water but it has been a great summer sailing around the Hauraki Gulf. You are so right about the crew at Quayside Boatyard, Martin, Ari and Aaron run a fantastic yard, such an amazing spot to be and work on your boat. Enjoy your travels ! See you next time ! John and Alison
I admit that I don’t get to watch all of your videos, I usually come back and binge for a while, but I do miss some. I love seeing how far you’ve come each time I come back, and that is not just how far physical distance you’ve come, but you and your life as well! The first video I saw of yours (and it was in “real time”, or as close to it…within a week of upload tops), was you getting that first engine installed. And you and your brother trying to clean the bottom of the boat while in the water using snorkels (your brother ended up doing with scuba gear). Those didn’t appear to be as “happy” of times for you, especially later when you’re all set to go and discover you’re going alone instead of with your partner. Probably the best thing for you, you’ve just done SO much since then and come across as one of the calmest most at peace sailors out there. You’re an inspiration for sure, congrats man!! Congrats on ALL your accomplishments!! Cheers from 🇨🇦 🤠👍🏼☮️
@@SailorJames hey, if Quayside has ever considered production glass; I have a little skiff design, with a whole different kind of rig, on my channel. That cleaning & painting seemed to go really well, and in no time at all. It was amazing to see how far that tide went out and how everything around it had adapted. Triteia looking very spick and love the yellow stripe. I hope the seller is following you. Happy Sails Sailor James.
I would love to do this and get away from the madness here in the states! I’m ashamed of our leaders and the state of our republic! Definitely going to check in on a boat!
Great looking paint job, nice straight lines! That brief look at the rudder, it looks like the repair you did last year is holding up super well. Great job!

Wish you had shown launching your dingy and putting on the motor plus putting it back on the boat. I keep my dingy in the same place as yours but I generally take it off of the boat at the dock and pull it behind. Please show how you take it on and off in the water. Thanks for your great site.

Awesome river cruise, I took Matakana all the way up to Warkworth on a falling tide in late January. Only hit the mud once, James, Enjoy our crazy country. Cheers
Good to see the boat yard. I was working there a few years ago under previous owners. The yard is way nicer now. It was a bit run down back when I was there. Same lifter though. Happy cruising.
That's very easy to get a small boat like that up the river, we take much larger vessels up the river regularly. You probably could have got to the yard at low tide, but obviously you couldn't have got out of the water!
A good shout out to a great yard. Very helpful and knowledgeable guys. Cool to see you in my hood, you would have gone straight past my boat in Mahurangi Harbour.
James, I know you have traveled many nautical miles but I believe your greatest journey is your personal growth, experiences and love of this planet. So happy for you to have found a soul mate and thanks so much for sharing your life’s adventure with all of us!
James, you will be lucky to get 12 months out of that anti fouling system, I can believe you dint apply a self polishing paint, in tropical waters they work best, but don’t hope to get a 24 month’s out of a hard antifouling. Great videos by the way from a follower from Mallorca Spain.
Nice episode James! -- QUESTION -- Sorry to pester but I need to pick your brain. Cape Dory vs Alberg (both Carl Alberg designs)-- assuming they were the same size and same price and same general condition, is there a reason to prefer one over the other? I guess what I am asking is whether one company built better in some way over the other? Albergs were built in Ontario Canada and Cape Dory was built in the NE of the United States...
I would say that if Cape Dorys have lead keel ballast rather than iron ballast that would be the biggest difference, lead would be a better choice, otherwise it’s just a choice of aesthetics
Mean bro just wondering if u have seen any U.F.O out and about lately? U cant beat the sky veiw out there on the open ocean. Ive seen some stuff out there

@@SailorJamesunfortunately that didn’t work out for my dad. He was doing a circumnavigation of the UK, stopped off in Wales to return home for my sisters birthday, and someone working for the Marina put a hole in his hull, sunk his yacht.
