You really pointed out the key points. I did the same mistakes, 8 years was a long time. Cannot take it back, but as you said I will really emphasize international students do get to know, build good relation with lots of fellow Finnish students. Once left the university its really hard to build network.
Hey Jamal and thanks so much for sharing your experience. This is indeed something that is very difficult to do afterwards and i hope more internationals would start network already from day one. While i try to preach this at every turn, i also understand that this might not feel like the first priority after arriving to a new country.
Hey Oliver, really cool content and thank you for the advice, specially for the part of growing the professional network, which is essential nowadays.
I saw that the channel has been racking up subscribers and I'm really happy this is happening. Can't wait until the channel reaches 10 thousand subscribers, you definitely deserve many more!
Hey Arthur and thanks for the positive feedback! Its highly appreciated as always. The channel is growing nicely but its also a relatively small audience when compared to many other topics so slow and steady wins the race 👍
Thanks for the quality content. I am excited to spend 2 weeks in Aalto University for a short course as part of my exchange program.
Great advice! Thank you for this!
You are very much welcome! Do let me know if you have any questions about this or any other topic and id love to help you out.
Hope you create more short videos about Finland and studying! Thank you so much for your useful information! 🙏
I sure will Nguyen! Do let me know if you have any questions or perhaps ideas for future videos and id love to take those into account when planning future content 👍

First of all, Thank you Oliver for the content you make in this channel, it give me a better insight about life in Finland, I study in Lithuania, and I found something in common, I really wonder why most international students aren't active at all in student community (especially those from my university) and also why they hangout with each others or worst only with their own community
Hey Mohamed and thanks for sharing this! Really interesting thoughts that ive thought about myself, especially when i was in Germany for a semester. It seems that in many countries, student activities and volunteering isnt really a priority and its often not even encouraged. This is totally different in Finland where taking part in the student community and their activities is a super important part of the overall university experience. Interesting stuff to think about 👍
This channel is very useful 👌 thank you for doing this
Thanks so much for the positive feedback, i do honestly appreciate it! Do let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for future videos and id love to add those to my content plan.
Yep knowing people is really important in the job market here. I once got a job when I was shopping for groceries. I said hi to a guy I had worked with previously, and he offered me a job at the place he was then working at.
Also my current job is thanks to having a friend at a company in my field. One of the courses at our University of Applied Sciences was to do a project for a company, so I kind of jokingly asked my friend if they happened to have anything for me and my two class mates. Well, they did have a project for us and ever since finishing that project, we all three have been working for that company. And now that I'm working there, they seem to have quite a few job positions that are only advertised internally. So you can apply yourself or if you happen to know someone who would be a good candidate you can tell them about the open position.
Thangks so much for your information , this very important everyone to be prepare g self as internanational student .
I have been searching things for Finland, few days back I found your channel and now I can say that I am at right place.
Hey Majid and welcome to the community, awesome to have you here! I hope you dont mind me asking, are you currently planning on coming to Finland for your studies or would this be something that you'd like to think about in the future?
@@RoadtoFinnish , Hey Oliver ! Yes, I am planning to apply for admission + scholarship in master degree coming session specially at University of Aalto. Currently I am working at Effluent treatment plant as shift incharge, when I explored the waster program of Aalto university I really became interested in it, I would like to pursue master there and deeper my knowledge of field.
It’s hard for me to make friends with other students (both international students and Finnish students), but I believe I should take my time, and be open-minded to every opportunity
Oh totally, i think you are in the right direction with this. Just be open-minded and try to put yourself into situations where you will be able to get to know new people. I know it can be hard especially if you are an introvert but this is why i think student activities are one of the best ways to get to know people. Getting to know people through activities might feel much less awkward than just trying to sit down at a cafe trying to figure out what to say 😅. When you are doing some kind of an activity, you have more flexibility.
@@RoadtoFinnish yes, at least I can enjoy beautiful scenery or great food during activities, but make some friends would be much more better :D
motivational and informative video!!
Glad you think so! Do let me know if you have any questions or perhaps ideas for future videos that you would like me to make.
Whoa!Applying a student housing after arriving in Finland😅 very brave
😅 brave but rather naive. Not a good idea if you ask me.
Yeah, small countries really rely on personal networks for jobs (and black-market apartments), more than formal qualifications or the formal application process. Small-country old boys' and girls' networks can really be vicious. Got me my job in Sweden (some-one I had met briefly in graduate school who worked there recommended me!) but kept me from advancing far (for some reason, I was never called on for the important voluntary things, like being "opponent" on a dissertation). One's name just never comes up!
I am just intermediate level, but I can understand nearly everything what are you talking about. Incredible! :0
Thats cool to hear 😅
I'm Finnish and not a student but still like to watch your videos. I don't know why. :)
Love your videosss!!!!!!
Glad you like them! Just remember, as always, that i love to get constructive feedback so that i can further improve the videos in the future 🙂
Hey haven't seen your videos in a while
Hope you good!
Hello, great content! I might actually start my master's at Aalto this September! The thing is, I feel like most of these pieces of advice rely on you being an extrovert, which is bad news for me 😥. I mean I am an introvert and get anxiety when with large groups of people, so I don't think these clubs and networking stuff will work for me. but I will do my best.
Hey! What will you study there? Did you get news already?
I'm studying building technology :). I'm just trynna get by for this period.@@liad0x

You are most welcome! Do let me know if you have any questions or if anything was left unclear and id love to elaborate 👍
When you gain trust with finnish people you have real and honest friend for rest of your life.
Very true!
Thank you very much for those informations. I am going to Aalto university next semester as an exchange student. I am very worried about the social part of my stay. Is it easy to make some friends and to find parties ? Do you have any tips for the social stuff?
Some of these are Dos and Don't for all international students in all countries tho like not relying on part time jobs and not restricting themselves to other international students. I know one friend of mine tho who is actually in Sweden and she attends an international univesity (as in all students are international there) and she was bullied and harrassed early on in her studies by some of the male international students there that caused her to become reserved and just not wanting to get out there and make friends and instead she drowned most of her time there in books just trying not to even be around people and just sticking to her books and the library, so, that 'not wanting to get out of books and not wanting to mix with people' might actually legit be a sign of depression and trauma or homesickness and maybe it's not 100% controllable by the person themselves in unfortunate cases like hers and not a sign that the international student isn't looking forward to make friends with the people of the country they're in.
But Oliver, some student housing associations don't open applications until a couple of months prior to the beginning of the semester. I don't know if that is because of covid or not, though. In those cases, should we apply for the spring semester and start paying until autumm, when we in fact arrive, or can we wait until it opens without the risk of being losing oportunities?
Oh nono, just apply as soon as they allow you to. This is why i mentioned that you should apply as soon as you can depending on the rules of each provider. So no, dont apply for an apartment for the spring. Just mark your calendar so that you can apply for the auyumn as soon as the application opens 👍
Please do you know anything about Vamia's school year and if one can defer admission?
Hi, thank you for your helpful videos. I’d like to ask you where I can find volunteering, clubs and guilds.
Thanks so much for the great question! This depends on the university that you are studying at. Most schools actually have a webpage about the local student life from where you can find more information. For example, Aalto university has a webpage about student life and if you go all the way down and click the drop-down menu titled _More information about student unions_ you will get links to the websites of the most important student organisations. You can then get more information from those websites. Here is the link to the Aalto university webpage: www.aalto.fi/en/study-at-aalto/student-life
While searching information on the web is one option, the issue is that there are so many different organisations that its pretty much impossible to find info on everything on the web. So the best way to find information on the different clubs, guilds and other student organisations is by asking your student tutor once you have arrived to Finland and started your studies.
I hope that this answered your question 👍
@@RoadtoFinnish Thank you so much your kind reply. It helps me a lot.
Hello, Oliver, thanks for the video, I've been watching them lately and its very informative. I got a question. Does hoas offer multiple options to choose from? Or do they send you one, and if your decline, you don't know when the next one is coming?
During my exchange semester in Helsinki it was that if you are lucky, you will receive one offer from HOAS. Should you decline that, you won’t get any other offer. Or at least it was like that when I was in Helsinki 😊
Hey and thanks for the great question! Vanessa is totally correct here. Hoas and other student apartment providers usually give you one offer (one option) and if you decline it, you will be put in the back of the queue meaning that you will most likely not get a new offer at least within the same semester.
Hi again Oliver, when does hoas normally start offering their apartments to the applicants? I’ve applied in late March and just wonder if I will ever get a reply before the semester starts.
@@leelee1320 Hard to say. They do this over time so it doesnt happen all at the same time. If you applied in March, i would not be worried. If Hoas offers you an apartment, this should happen a good time before the start of the academic year.
@@RoadtoFinnish thank you!
So... be prepared to position yourself in the outer orbits of Fins who take a long time to warm up? Sounds delightful.
Hey oliver !
I hope your doing well!
I had some doubts regarding the application period ( normally the application for international students in aalto university starts in January after applying and if get selected when will the university start ( physical classes)
Is it in the August?
Thank you!
Hey Divij! The academic year at universities starts in the first or the second week of september depending a bit on your courses. Universities of applied sciences start their academic year a bit earlier so in the last weeks of august.
@@RoadtoFinnish thanks man!
Sure thing!
In all honesty, if I was Finland or Finnish universities I'd officially thank you because I'm guessing you're doing way more to help unFinnish people to properly assimilate and fit in and dissolve into Finnish society and on a global scale than the official Finnish government and schools are doing (don't fight me on it tho, that's just my guess and it's a fact that your videos are educating people worldwide not just people who are already in Finland).
I have applied on 7th April, but TOAS didn't give me any ray of hope. Pl guide me, to find out budget dwelling for students.
Can you be a bit more specific. What do you mean that they didnt give you any hope? Toas is the best student apartment provider in the area and i have no other recommendations.
Thank you for sharing such information. I wanted to ask if its possible to a foreigner to get 100% fully funded scholarship, merit based......... and my second question is will I get a chance to have my cost of living covered to either part of the scholarship or if its possible to apply for a job before arrival using my student visa probably to cover my cost of living. Do help. I want to apply for my Master's degree, MBA
Hello
thanks for the informative video u made
Got to know many new things about Finland
And I also have one question if u can answer I am applying for Kamk uni for master of business administration in global businesses management how is the University and I am planning to come with my spouse in n next intake on January 2022
Any suggestions please
You're most welcome. Im glad to hear that this was useful. To your question: the Kamk university of applied sciences is a great school and if you have found a programme that interests you, i can highly recommend it. To be clear, there are also quote-on-quote "better" school for studying a master's degree in business but Kamk is also a great school.
One detail that i should clarify though. Kamk is actually not a university but rather its a university of applied sciences. This might be a bit confusing because the Finnish education system is pretty much different from most of the world. However, universities of applied sciences (UAS) are sometimes referred to as a polytechnic universitis. There are a few differences between universities and universities of applied sciences that you should know about. I have a video in which i explain all the differences in detail. You can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/u2cDS0xAnkk/видео.html
I'm watching your videos out of a cultural interest, as I am 74, will not move anywhere, and it is very unlikely that I will learn any other language in my short future. But I have questions.
Is there a Swedish-language university in Finland?
I assume that music and literature are not taught at Aalto University. So, where are they taught in Finland?
What percentage of Aalto University students are proficient in languages other than Finnish, Swedish, and English?
Åbo Akademi University is Swedish-speaking.
@@andersjarvinen2086 Kiitos. Onko sinulla vastauksia muihin kysymyksiin?
For your second question: depends on what you mean by this! Music studies are taught at Sibelius Academy, Åbo Akademi/University, and in the universities of Helsinki, Turku, Jyväskylä and Oulu. In some of these it is a degree of a music teacher (a Master's degree), while some teach composing and producing music, or music sciences, to give you some examples.
I think Aalto University is one of the only, if not the only university in Finland that does not offer literature studies.
Anyone who has more information can correct me, though!
Love your face on the thumbnail Oliver xD. hahahahah
Oh man, doing youtube videos feels so weird when you have to resort pulling these faces 😅. But i guess it summarises my feelings about this topic in the end.
Hey oliver can you make a video for food options in university, PLEASE
especially Vegetarian, also no live interaction last week's. Sup ? You okay, man ?
I applied for housing on24 of March. Hope that was early enough 🙏
Oh that sounds early enough 👍. I would be very optimistic about your situation.
@@RoadtoFinnish short feedback. I got a room from ayy! Thanks again for the early application tip 😊
While I was a tutor for some internationals, the worst mistake one made was buying piimä thinking it's yogurt, boy was he in for a surprise 😆
Oh boy, that was a mistake you wont forget 😅
A foreign student must show proof that they have enough money in their bank account to cover living expences for the each year of study. One needed to do this at the start of each year. This was how it was when I studied in Helsinki 20 years ago anyway. When I studies, I heard about groups of foreign students who would move a sum of money from one person's bank account to anothers so that everyone in that group could get the proof of funds that was required to continue their studies.
Bro .. i got admission in Vaasa university for smart energy.. does this field has a great scope in Finland!?
Oh man, huge congrats that is huge news! Vaasa is an excellent university and im sure that you are going to enjoy yourself there. Smart energy is definitely a field for the future and Vaasa is an excellent city to study the subject! So yes, it definitely has a great scope in Finland and especially in Vaasa 👍. Once again, congrats on the admission 🥂
I think there some great opportunities to get a part time job like, uber, pizza/newspapers delivery, ect? Am i wrong about that?
Hey and thanks for the great comment. So the reason why i mentioned the part-time jobs in this case is explained in this video: ruclips.net/video/H-Ckw7_AY2w/видео.html . In short, its very hard to get a part time job as a student (especially if you are in early stages of your studies) that pays enough to pay for your living costs - and especially your tuition fees.
Having said this, there are definitely some good part time opportunities that you could pursue. Some of the ones that you mentioned are great. The only one that i would not recommend right away is Uber. This is because in Finland, Ubers are considered the same as Taxis meaning that you need to get a Taxi license. This not only requires that you have a drivings license that has been issued is a EU/EEA country but it also requires you to apply for a Taxi license which takes around 4-6 weeks to get and has a 400€ base cost. More information about driving an Uber in Finland: www.uber.com/fi/en/drive/requirements/?city=helsinki
That was just one example, but i would actually highly recommend looking at food delivery jobs. These can actually make you a nice amount of money if you get to know the city well. The best food delivery company in Finland is Wolt. You can read about their delivery jobs here: wolt.com/en/couriers
As someone workin part-time in recruitment for newspaperdiliverers (I will not disclose what company on this account), I would say it definitely can be an option. But be prepared to ride a bike in -20°C.
@@johannespilvikukka6003 😢i know it's not easy, how much is your salary in the newspaper delivery?
@@abderrahmane7577 it of course depends on the length of the routes, but most carriers make between 900-1200 a month after taxes. That is still a few hundred more than what many Finnish students get by on from the government.
Is May/june good to applying for accomodation ?
Depends on when you need to move in. The best time to apply is the second that you are allowed to as per to the rules of each individual apartment provider.
Hey
I'm currently doing my A levels and I want to study in finland .
Do you mind helping me with civil engineering links for the universities please
Also which engineering would reccomend lol
Hey Margaret. In short, i would recommend you to apply to an engineering course that you are actually interested in. I would disregard recommendations by third parties and just go with your gut. You can build a wonderful career regardless of your specialisation and a good rule of thumb is that the more your personally enjoy the topic, the better you will do in school and during your career.
Personally, i was not able to find a bachelors degree in civil engineering taught in Finland in English (i also did not spend more than 5 minutes on this so you might have better luck). This might simply mean that there are no bachelors level degrees available in this specific field BUT it does not mean that you could not pursue the field in Finland. You could e.g. do a more general engineering degree in your bachelors, after which you can apply for a master's degree in civil engineering. Just my idea.
I hope this helps 👍
@@RoadtoFinnish Thank I'll take note of that.
A general bachelors in engineering is cool right?
Are they website to get student appartements in lahti?
Yes. Please check out Lahden Talot from this website: lahdentalot.fi/opiskelijalle/?lang=en
Can I apply students Apartment before I receive my resident permit
This is fully dependent on the student apartment provider. I would recommend that you check out the individual rules from their website.
How much non eu and eea bachelor student averagely earn in finland??
Your nationality should not have any impact on your salary whatsoever. In addition, there are no average salaries for all students or graduates. Your salary will depend on a billion different things and there is absolutely no way for me to give you a number.
Will there be any issue to join masters program in USA after completing 3 year bachelor's in Finland?
Again, i have no idea. I do not know anything about the admission system in the US so im not the right person to answer this question. I think the more relevant question here is why would you want to do a master's in the US while you could do a great master's degree in Finland (especially if you are already considering doing a bachelor's here).
@@RoadtoFinnish thanks for reply. Was just checking in case you are aware of any foreign student who has done 3 Yr bachelor's in Finland and went to US for masters.
My son is a US citizen living in India. He will be doing masters in USA and moving there for good. Was checking the option of doing bachelor's in Finland instead of India as he wants to live and experience Europe before going to US.
Bachelor's in India and USA are for 4 yrs while Europe its 3 yrs. Will check with US universities. Thanks
Oh this is actually quite interesting. Thank you very much for sharing such a personal story. If your son is indeed planning on studying in the US in order to stay there for good, i would definitely recommend that he should do his bachelor's there as well. There are many different opinions on this topic and while some people will argue that getting experience from around the world is good (count me into this group), i would still recommend that your son should stick to one country. This is simply due to the way that friendships and networks are built. If he comes to Finland for 3 years, he will start building personal relationships as well as professional networks in Finland. However, those are going to be almost completely useless in terms of his career development if he then leaves to work in the US. At least in Finland, professional networks are one of the most valuable tools in one's job hunting toolbox and this would feel like waste for me.
So if we think about your sons career development (and to be honest, personal life), doing his studies primarily in one country could be the better option. Having said this, i highly recommend getting experience from other countries as well and one great option for him to do this would be to include an international exchange semester as a part of his studies in the US. This means that he would do a full semester in e.g. Europe. This way he could get the cultural and personal experiences without it imposing too much permanent change into his life. Hope this makes some sense 😏
@@RoadtoFinnish yep, agree with you. It's fun studying/working in different countries. But building permenant friendships and contacts will be a challange. Will keep your advice in mind.
@@sunilparvataneni Oh traveling and experiencing different cultures is the best thing one could do. Really happy to hear such different stories from people around the world. Much appreciated.

Please, do Universities in Helsinki accept low grade students for Master degree?
All university admissions in Finland are done on a competitive basis. This means that you will always have to compete for a spot against other applicants. There are no schools that specifically accept "low grade students". Instead, some universities are more popular than others meaning that it will be easier to get in to some than to others. Unfortunately i cant help you find a suitable school because i would need to have a ton of information about you, your interests as well as different degree programmes. So what i would recommend you to do is to start looking for interesting programmes from this website: opintopolku.fi/konfo/en/sivu/higher-education-degrees#masters-degrees . Once you find an interesting programme, you can read more about it and the application criteria from the university website.
I hope this helps.

Yes. There are a bunch of really great and innovative clothing businesses in Finland especially focusing on sustainable garments.

Also i want to do it during my bachelor studies.i have heared that getting a license in finland is about 1100 €.so if i have license from my own country then what would be the cost of getting license in finland??also i heared that the non eu and eea citizens can work 25 hours week, means 100 hour/month. so how much can i earn from driving 25h/week??please tell me
@@shakirnawaz1072 I dont know all the details about driving licenses but my understanding is that you should be able to use your current license in Finland. There are some exceptions e.g. when it comes to driving manual vs automatic and when it comes to driving in Finland as a profession. You need you to check out these details from this website: ajokortti-info.fi/en/getting-driving-licence
About jobs and the limited work hours, you are correct in that non-EU/EEA citizens can only work for 25 hours per week (on average) during the school semesters. Do note that holidays are different. I explain this in detail in this video and i recommend you to check it out: ruclips.net/video/pE1xEHanXR4/видео.html I have no idea how much you could make by working as a driver (taxi, uber or something similar) for 25 hours per week. However, what i can say is that driving as a profession in Finland is something you cant just start doing. It requires you to get a taxi license (even if you drive uber) which takes a while to get and costs a bit to apply for. You can find all the relevant information here: www.uber.com/fi/en/drive/requirements/?city=helsinki
I heared from a youtuber in finland that there is a scope of earning much through driving in finland as a part time job
@@shakirnawaz1072 Perhaps but im not familiar with these numbers. I try to avoid giving blanket statements about potential earnings and income because the amount of money you make is always dependent on your personal abilities and skillsets. Two people doing a similar job can still make different amounts of money a) if the other person works harder and longer hours or b) is able to negotiate a better salary because of their experience, education etc..
If you want to know about potential salaries from e.g. driving an Uber, id suggest contacting Uber Finland about this. Its hard for me to say anything more here simply because i dont have the numbers.
Mistake 1. Coming to Finland.
2. Thinking Helsinki is a representative of Finland in any way.
3. If you make the mistake of coming to Finland, worse yet mistake is NOT learning Finnish swearwords and their use. They´ll save you from most trouble. Cursing believeably in Finnish will make you accepted almost everywhere. A place it won´t make you accepted, is a place not worth going to.
1. I respectfully disagree.
2. No capital city represents the entire country. Helsinki is not unique in this regard.
3. Again, i absolutely disagree that moving here would be a mistake. The second part i wont even address because well..
Biggest mistake is to go anywhere where they don’t like you and yours. Their lifestyles demand you not be yourself or live by your ways. Instead of Finland, just throw yourself in a ditch and let foreigners piss on you. But they welcome your money,if you stay in line. Not that it’s not like that here,it’s just easier when you naturally do it.
Stop going to OTHER PEOPLE'S COUNTRIES if you refuse to live by THEIR WAYS. You don't get to live by YOUR ways.
If a fool doesn’t like it here,he travels. Intelligent people move.
