I usually go based on gameplay and view. First Person and Arena style. All the other "genres" are just variants off of those two. For example, CoD story mode to me is the same thing as CoD Warzone, but people insist on calling it something different because it's online. Single player or Multiplayer or Role Player? it doesn't matter you still play the game from the same point of view which is either First Person or Select/Drag/Drop arena style view. I'm not trying to rile anyone up, this is just the way I see it.
I get confused when it comes to action game genres . Like 3rd person hack and slash and 3rd person action games. Eg comparing god of war 2005 to a game like ninja gaiden 2 or metal gear rising. Or when it comes to a specific sub genre like jsut cause 3 a 3rd person action open world shooter

I’m a jack of all trades (Im good at a lot of different types of games like fighting games, rpgs, shooters, etc) but i have never mastered a game and got SUPER good at it.
I'm here because i want to make a team seas related game which there would be two teams, one of them would be named "Team Mr Beast" and the other will be "Team Mark Rober" (That is a reference to Mark's team seas video where he and Jimmy competed each other to see who can pick up the most trash). I don't have many ideas for Mr Beast's team but if the player click on "Team Mark Rober", they'll have two options, 1. Build the machine (isn't REALLY related to real life) and 2. Start working/ Start collecting trash. If the player clicks on the "start collecting trash" option, they'll get to move the machine/robot to collect the trash. If the player click on "build machine", idk, i don't have the idea for this. In the menu (of the intire game), there will be a single player or multiplayer button. On the single player mode, there will be a bot playing as the opposite team. And on multiplayer mode, you and random stranger/ your friend will be able to compete with each other. Idk what game type that is but if you know, please tell me which Language is the best for this!
Dear AltChar, Great video, very interesting and indeed very explanatory. I must say though that I disagree - with all due respect - with your way of differentiating MMOs and MMORPGs based on the setting. I believe the distinction between the two relies more on the Role-Playing factor (character, and like you mentionned: possibility of skills (or magics) upgrade, and inventory management). FTR: I haven't played Audition (and don't really plan on it, still with all due respect!) A counter example of your way of setting the boundary between MMOs and MMORPs would be a modern RPG. One could think of an MMO using the Watchdog setting or a hypothetical Borderlands-GTA setting where you could have a few character classes to chose from and evolve in an open world, such as a Hacker, a Thug (physical-muscles-person), a shooter, a healer (a physican I guess). Something like this. Anyhow, great video, thank you, all the best! P.S. I believe you might have also forgotten some more niched genres, such as racing games (speak for themselves) and simulation and/or tycoons.
I don't think the information on the whole "fantasy setting" defining MMORPGs is particularly accurate. Though there aren't many, there have been MMORPGs situated in more realistic settings like Shin Megami Tensei Imagine (set in post-apocalyptic tokyo) or king of fighters world which takes place in SNK's in-universe version of the real world. Generally speaking it makes a lot more sense to define a gaming genre through its mechanics than doing it through its plot/setting.
I feel like RPGs need to redefined but that's obviously super debatable. For me, Witcher 3 is an Action Adventure game (like you said), and I think the fact that it has quests and leveling is not enough to make it an RPG. An RPG is strictly a game where I create my own character, with user-defined stats and personality. But clearly that's not the modern standard for RPGs, Thanks for the great video :)
It doesn't need to be redefined because definitions are accurate. Only what need to be done is to console kids finally accept them. Witcher series is Action RPG. It has significant character choices what literally is role play. Leveling and stats is tactical suplement from RPG systems, not role play itself. Because you can create own piece of wood, it doesn't mean that it is a character, same as having predefined character with actually broad range of ways to play him doesn't make game not-RPG. On the contrary. Best cRPG's usually have fixed charters with world actually answering to they personal choices. Because someone think that cart is a car, it doesn't make it not a cart.
Yep there’s major differences. And yet people don’t get that. Hating on Gotham Knights because its not Arkham is like hating on pizza for not being ice cream. One is action adventure one is rpg.
Next the differences between franchises. For example farcry vs call of duty. I wanted to shop fps but they all looked the same to me. Knowing what makes one game different than the other would be useful.
RPG and MMORPG is the one that confuse me. Example is bloodborne or ffxIV both are considered as RPG but both of them can be connected online and meet other players. is it mean they are MMORPG as well? :)
It isn't confusing. It is just that console kids refuse to accept that it isn't a console genre. Explanation for dummies: Role-play is type of party game where group of people act as fictional characters. Genre split on LARP (live action role-playing game) where people literally use requisites and costumes. And Tabletop RPG (aka Pean and Paper) where people do that purely narratively, usually using support of Tactical-RPG systems like Dragon and Dungeon to randomize repeatable and chance based actions. cRPG's are computer simulation games simulating mentioned party games. They split on simplified combat focus "Hack and Slash" and exploration focus "Dungeon Crawl". Most early cRPG's were Dungeon Crawl due to inability of using complex trademarked systems. So called "jRPG" are Tactic-Adventure games, what alongside Action-Adventure and First Person Shooter evolved from early Dungeon Crawl games. But they aren't actually representative of the genre. Most modern uses of term "RPG" make no sense and is in denial of it being old PC genre. Simplest definition of RPG is game with significant character choices.
Adventure games are already mix of logic and narrative games. Also Action-Adventure is one of most common genres on market. Just idiots call them "RPG" for some reason?
People should make videos like this When a person say he/she is a gamer, they don't say what kinds of game do they play and I'm interested in some games but I don't know what they are called or what genre do they belong to. I was confused. This is the first thing a gamer should have explained to someone who is new to gaming if they want a new subscriber and they should teach how to play first but they are just showing off their skill. Like where is the tutorials? I don't think someone can learn anything from watching a screen controlled by someone, unless he or she knows how to play.
Great video! I have to disagree with you about Witcher 3 though, as that is similar to BOTW in that it is an action/adventure game with RPG elements rather than an actual RPG.
