    From a guy running the 24 Assault - I wish the stance was narrower. It's super capable in deep snow, headlight deep, but it can't hold an edge to save its life. 42.5 inch skis is ridiculous for a Crossover. It's not really a mountain skid either, with extra bogey wheels and a wider skid. Yes it's un-coupled but that's about it. It carves good but only in deep powder when there's forgiveness in terrain, otherwise it wants to slam that front end down and stay planted. The skis fight you in a carve and you can visibly see the rider fighting the bars.
    If you're a trail guy the assault is amazing. If you plan on hills, get a Khaos 146 with the 2.0 track.

      @@kwmiked at least one of them raced snow cross. I met a guy on the trails who told me how to set up my front suspension on my 2006 Yamaha Attack .. night and day better handling with less pre-load on the front springs. It's rate that I ever run into anyone who can keep up with me on the trails.
      Then My 10" Simmons ski dug into the top of a culver and bent my A-arms and Spindle .. I think it was Mountain Performance only had the 1.5" wider A-Arms so now my sled has a 3" wider stance and 10" wide skies.. I think they A-arms are chrome molly too. Also bent a shock badly when the plastic ski dug into the top of the Culvert. so went with Fox Air shocks .

    Another great review. Look forward to some long pulls across a lake against one another. Be cool if all the boosted sleds were involved & some break-in was incl. The 998 always whips a little stronger after 1500 km’s on the odo. Can’t help but notice the predominately 2 manufacturer exposure this year. For obvious reasons but still not the way we wish it were.

      @@snowtrax I was a Skibum @ Alta UT in 1983. They average 500" of snow per year of really light powder. In '83 they got 720 inches of snow 60 feet. They told me they don't ride snowmobiles in the Wasatch they just get stuck. It was about then that guys started custom building long Track sleds for riding in the Powder in the Mountains. Mountain sleds have come a long way in recent years.
      I have done a lot of extreme skiing in the steep and deep but have never ridden a sled in the Mountains with exception of a half day rental near Whistler. I got yelled at for riding too fast in the first 15 minutes. I was lagging way back in last place then would speed up . I got in trouble for going off the groomed trail . We did get to ride on a open meadow or Lake with Deep Snow.. The Guide was showing me how to stand up to corner in the powder, but my legs were so burned up I could hardly walk so I just sat on the seat most of the time. It only took about 3 days for my legs to recover, but I was back in Michigan by then.
      It used to take me 30 days of skiing to get my legs in great shape to ski hard core moguls and powder for the next two months. Did that for 3 winters instead of college.. Then became self employed .. Blew out my knee the last year and my knee brace would wear my calf raw after 1 days of skiing . A few years later I got a good comfortable CTI brace. I duct tape it over my ski pants and am good to go. Have worn it snowmobiling too.

    Good video guys. Thanks for going over the offer trail performance. I like both sleds but will be off trail more most likely as I leave from home more to go snowmobiling and usually have to make my own trails or go onto trails that are not groomed and barely anyone goes on. I am springchecking the Backcountry. Do you think the 43” front end will do well in 3 feet of powder on old mining and logging roads?

    • @snowtrax
      @snowtrax  3 дня назад +2

      I think you're going to sacrifice a little bit in the deep stuff to get that better on-trail handling, but I think you'll still have a great time playing in the powder. Note that the 43 is also geared taller for trail riding and the 39 is geared lower for off-trail.

      Just make sure the mileage is low. If it has over 5000 miles, it might be ready for some maintenance or a rebuild. Ask your dealer if the 800 got re-flashed. I think that fixed a lot of the issues it originally had. Lots of great insight on this thread. I'm positive the people in this community will help with some solid advice.

    I just had a thought that both made me said and Laugh about you Communists in the Great White North. I was thinking the speed limit is very low. I did a search that told me the speed limit in Ontario is 50 KPH.. What a Joke.. Why spend Over $20,000.00 on a sled that you can't even run half throttle. If we ever get snow in SW Michigan .. I can hit 100 MPH on some of the straight aways across corn fields. I like to be a bit more conservative when I am near trees.
    Speed limits. The maximum speed limit on snowmobile trails is 50 km/h, but conditions often require a slower speed. Adjust your speed to the weather and trail conditions. Alongside roads, speed limits for snowmobiles are not the same as the posted speed limits for other vehicles. Here are the limits for different paths and areas. I guess I can triple the speed limit of Ontario and go at least 162 KPH
    My 2006 Yamaha Attack was reading 129 MPH on the Dreamometer that was 116 MPH on GPS and my 2014 Skidoo Renegade 800 hits the Rev Limiter at 108 MPH on GPS.. I did not know what on earth was wrong with it spitting and sputtering and cutting out. Then I got prescription glasses with bi-focals so I can read the gauges and see the overspeed warning.
