Give Robot Chicken time. They'll probably do a sketch of the knockoffs invading He-man's universe. They already did it with Legos and Transformers. lol.
Best backstory ever. Whoever translated this into English missed the part about the Lord of Darkness being named "Tneutates", though. I guess Euro Play meant the Gallic god "Teutates", but inexplicably added an "n" in there.
I'm pretty surprised how OLD these bootlegs are. On the package it says "W. Germany", which probably means "WEST Germany". The Reunification was in 1990. And (according to my research) the original TMNT toyline came out in 1988. So the bootleggers from Langenfeld really didn't waste any time to come up with this weird concept.
While the reunification did happen in 1990, it took some time for the pistal codes to get changed to include the former GDR as well. So until 1993 the old codes along with the terms East Germany and West Germany were still in use
I am German. They started airing the original Turtles TV show on German television in 1990 and the cardbacks of the Turly knockoffs have the old German zip-codes on them, so the figures must have probably been made and sold betweeen 1990 and 1993. The back of the card also says if you send them 15 Turly points you will enter a competition and you might win one of 100 'surprise boxes', worth 50 Deutschmarks.
More likely they send you unwanted sweepstakes subscriptions for your turly points and pocket some extra Deutschmarks for selling your info. Spam... spam never changes...
Interestingly, I saw one these carded for $15 at Steel City Con like a year or two ago. At the time thought "$15 for a bootleg, no thanks". Didn't realize it was so rare. Whoops!
The more of these I see, the more I think someone needs to commission someone to make a Galaxy Warriors animated series, with characters from all depths of the Galaxy Hole making appearances, and Phelan being head writer. And play it as dead-serious as every merchandise-driven cartoon in the 80s did: Transformers, He-Man, with a tinge of TMNT comedy... could be a classic series. And no legal issues to worry about because, what, are a bunch of bootleggers gonna sue? Hehehe...
Ih my Gawd I know these. Im from germany and they werent sold in shops or Toy Stores, these Figures were prizes at carnival and travelling fair Booths.
Some people in Germany have said they saw them in convenience type stores. But yeah I wouldn't doubt it was really spotty on where you would find them. That's funny though that they were used as prizes.
Know what would be an interesting way to modify the backstory of the Turly Gang? What if instead of a literal volcano, it was a cooling tower filled with radioactive waste, but the characters only saw it as a "volcano". I know the plausibility of that happening when there's enough radioactive waste to fill a cooling tower is nonexistent, but it could suggest a post-apocalyptic story and the precursors of the Turly Gang have limited knowledge of the old world (assuming the story suggests they were human pre-mutation), so they identified the cooling tower as a volcano. This could also be a big focus on the story, seeing how a lot of the other figures "look" like mutants themselves. This volcano could be used as a prime goal of either faction to have total control of it, so they can have the resources to make mutant fighters, because regular fighters are less interesting I guess.
16:10 Holy moly! I had that one as a child! My parents got it for me while I was in hospital. It also came with one of those weird shields! Kinda cool to see it after so many years.
Just one correction on that translation. [2:20] In the second sentence it's "the devious hordes of Theutates, the lord of darkness". Theutates is simply a name and does not mean "the Troubles". By the way: Theutates is actually the name of a celtic tribal protection deity. I guess, the Turly gang are actually christian crusaders fighting against the evil pagans.
BTW Ork & Aquarius came with the scorpion and the spider. I had them back in the day and they had the animals with them. The funny thing is, that you also have a photo in your video, where they are in the original package WITH the rubber animals at 8:07. @Phelan Porteous
The fact that the symbol for the troubles is a star with a blue background and this was mainly released in Germany it's interesting I wonder if that's a coincidence
I didn't see anybody in the top comments say this, so: Primus is latin for "first". Secundus is latin for "second". So yeah, they don't even have proper names, they're literally Turly #1 and Turly #2. (Also this means Primus would probably be leader.)

I like to think that Sungold/Sewco/etc is all actually a company started by Phelous who's somehow time travelled back to the 80's simply as a method of messing with himself. Like he used a time machine just for the lols.
apparently Europlay were taken to court in the Netherlands over these designs - www.rvo.nl/sites/default/files/octrooiportal/2013/11/1993_nr6_%252844-53%2529.pdf but they may have won? not 100% sure, I can't parse Google translated Dutch legalese well enough apparently. but maybe they figured it wasn't worth the hassle and decided to change the designs to avoid any further trouble.
I can indeed confirm that Europlay won their case. On April 23rd, 1992, the Dutch court ruled that "Turtle-poppen dragen een duidelijk kunstzinnig karakter; gezien de verschillen maken de Turly Gang-poppen geen inbreuk op auteursrecht." which roughly translates to "Turtle-figures have a distinct art style; the differences are so big that the Turly Gang-figures do not infringe on their copyright."
Well, Turly Gang Titius (Baltard) in ebay Germany for 59€ now I'm almost tempted, but no, the G1 Dinobots and the Lego King's Castle set 6080 must have higher priority.
Phelous, will you be doing more of the Galaxy Hole? I bet there is more crazy stuff. Also, cause people tend to love Twisted Toyfare Theatre and Robot Chicken, you should do your own sketch shows like you do at the end of Bootleg Zones, but make them full episodes. Those parts at the end are some of the best parts.
Twisted Toyfare Theater! Hell yes! I’ve never actually seen or heard anyone else ever utter those glorious three words! Dude, Toyfare as a whole was amazing, and those segments were so goddamn funny. (I’m saying “was” in past tense as the magazine I’m thinking of ended quite a few years ago, but if you’re talking about something else connected to it, that’s news to me.)

When I was reading up on this, someone claimed that the more turtle-like versions might actually be newer than the ones with the iguana headsculpts. Though that would just raise even more questions.
Definitely not, they did actually get in legal trouble over the line and that's why the head's changed. I talked about it a bit in this vid: ruclips.net/video/x0UhrU6k2Yg/видео.html
"Three Satohs?? Damn it, Phelan, you don't need three gimp Baltards!" nearly caused me to choke to death lmao
Honestly, I'd watch some sort of Robot Chicken-style sketch show done with your bootlegs and all the utterly absurd situations you invent.
Give Robot Chicken time. They'll probably do a sketch of the knockoffs invading He-man's universe. They already did it with Legos and Transformers. lol.

The Turly Gang walked so that Turtles of Grayskull could run
Someone give Boltard his own movie, it would be the best thing ever.
BUT BALTARD!!!!!!
I'd buy that for a dollar! (1980 US$)
Also the sequel should be called: Baltard 2: Electrocute Baltard.
The Fusion scene alone deserved a thumbs up. Thanks for doing this video I've been looking forward to it... I'm almost a year late though.
This is becoming a favorite episode

He-Man and TMNT have finally been joined!
Am I not Turly enough for the Turly Gang?

I actually think these are very cool, my 2 favorite lines as a kid besides Star Wars mashed up, pretty damn cool if you ask me. Great Knockoffs. Deserve some Respect. The Turly Gang, Fighters For Freedom! Come on Nickelodeon let's get us a Turly Gang Series!
wow I really want to start a collection of these... so cool!!!!
Why are these so entertaining?
When I was reading up on this, someone claimed that the more turtle-like versions might actually be newer than the ones with the iguana headsculpts. Though that would just raise even more questions.
Definitely not, they did actually get in legal trouble over the line and that's why the head's changed.
I talked about it a bit in this vid:
