For outsiders: you may recognize the quiet atmosphere of a village. However, this is the vivid city centre serving over 350.000 people (but not filmed during rush hour) Imagine one additional car for every cyclist you see, and it would be as noisy as other cities.
And with the towns around it that start right where the city 'ends' it's 650.000 people (Bestuurs Regio Utrecht). Between Utrecht and Houten there is still some few hundred meters of fields but cities like Maarsen and Nieuwegein are already half swallowed by Utrecht. Much of this route served as an unofficial ring-road less than 5-10 years ago and was always totally packed with cars. Utrecht has done great getting loads of cars off these roads but it's not strange that many people that don't visit Utrecht often still think this route is a viable quick option.
Why do people not understand this easy concept!?
I’ve moved to the Netherlands 7 years ago and have been to Germany, France, Belgium, and UK but i must say... Nothing beats the Dutch when it comes to their road infrastructure and organization in general. Even their trees look so organized and well trimmed xD
Driving from germany to Dutch roads, the difference is striking: no more 90 degrees 10 meter long off ramps from highways, that are only signalled ONCE. Same from Belgium to NL: the roads in Belgium are so much more in disrepair, its not funny anymore.
Bas Koning we have no border signs because anyone with a single digit IQ known when they’re in Holland. Heck, even blind people notice immediately, the car had stopped shaking the minute it crossed the border ;) and for those that do have functioning eyes all they see entering The Netherlands are beautiful well kept houses. Feels like entering the eastern block crossing the border. Belgium apparently has yet to discover paint and power washing.. dirty houses dirty roads peace out ✌️

And before it became a motorway it was a canal. So they reversed the situation to the original waterway.

I was there 2019 didn't realise there were so many hills, well more slopes.
@@mysurlytrucker7510 hahaha. That route is flat to me. I live in Derry, built on several small but steep hills. Doesn't matter how fit you are, walking up some streets leaves everyone out of breath. Enjoy the ease of movement.

17:12 on the right, the shelter is one of the last remaining physical vestiges of Utrecht’s original tram network - that was a tram stop. They were removed shortly before WWII and replaced with buses. Shortly afterward the city councilman responsible for that decision was seen driving a luxury car from the same maker as those buses... #shocking.

buymebluepills LA’s version is a little less corrupt, weirdly. The car companies simply *bought* the tram company and dismantled it. Ours was public and as such not for sale.

It didn't quite hit me what was going on until I reached this part. It implies that for the rest, the water _was_ removed. Because, yes, that's what the Dutch do. If the water is inconvenient we don't build around it: we just move the water.
Well, it was “only” about a quarter of it that was really gone, the Catharijnesingel mostly. The shortest snelweg in the country, going from nowhere to nowhere.

Support bicycles in your community. Children should be on bicycles not in minivans.

What a wonderful video. It's hard to believe that the canal once was a congested street. Transforming the road into a river vastly improves quality of life. I Notice the bikeways on either side of the street (cars limited to a single lane). Another quality of life enhancement.

I have lived in Utrecht for many years now, but never tried to cycle a round-trip around the old city centre. Apparently, it takes 21 minutes when you cycle at a normal, relaxed speed :)
Do it twice for exercise during lockdown. Pleasant townscape and minimal traffic off peak.

I remember my first visit to Utrecht, I think 2012 turning to a local and they were digging out the main canel that had been filled in many years ago and asking why they had ever filled it in. The local turned to me shrugged his shoulders and said councils they don't know what there doing they just like spending our money. I responded they're no better inAustralia either! NSW in Oz

12:37 man, what was that? I thought Utrecht was incredibly bike-friendly, but there seems to be a lot of those super narrow streets where cars must drive on the cycling lanes to avoid cars coming on the opposite direction.
Well the cycle lanes are made extra wide in purpose, so cars can only pass eachother by using the cycle lanes. This means they can use the cycle lanes as a guest and they need to give prior to the cyclist. This is the other way around in comparison with other countries where the cyclist is a unwanted guest on the road. By doing this they try to reduce carspeed, because the cars don't have there own lanes. They need to share the middle part together with the opposite direction and use the cycle lanes to pass.
@@gaetanobudding8232 I noticed that the cars aren't much faster than cycles in those spots, even when their way is clear. Better for pedestrians too.

I love cycling but people do not respect me at all I get honked at and sworn at and people fly over speed humps at 80kph in the suburbs and then have to share the street with cars it sucks. I’m also in an area that’s not that close to city 10km away so yeah

True indeed, but even cities like Rotterdam en The Hague don’t have that big of a city centre. To bike around lies inbetween 6-7km for all these cities. Even Amsterdam isn’t remarkably big for its size (around 12km so like 45 minutes). Although I think those would take longer because of the many more bizzy intersections.

Even in Netherlands if a bike lane is not protected people WILL park on it and think putting on their hazard lights means the rules don't apply to them.
Yes sometimes they do and most of them have a good reason for doing so, like unloading goods or something. But like most things, you won't notice drivers who thought "hey lets park a bit further to not block the cycle lane / road"

Oh yes, cunts exist everywhere. It's less of an issue though because 1) there are more protected bikelanes and alternative routes and 2) it happens less because most people cycle so they're more considerate when they drive a car. It's also less of an issue to go arround because the unprotected lanes are only on quiet, low speed streets.

Was wondering though, do employment places in general offer some kind of changing room or amenity to employees that come to work by bike?
Asking from Lisboa, Portugal.
Because riding by bike is so easy and un-intense, most people do not need to wash up or change clothes after their bikeride. It is really the difference between walking and jogging to work (you don't put on special clothes just for walking). But bigger workplaces often do offer a shower etc. If they are located in more isolated industrial areas or of their employees often bike form neighbouring towns (as is often the case in bigger cities and it's downtown office space).
Usually there is no need, dutch people bike their whole life, so they are used to pace themselves to not sweat or tire much, they use just normal clothes all day long, there is no much different between biking and walking, the weather helps though, is not that hot the whole year, only a few weeks in the summer, that might change a little in the future though.
Many of the bigger companies/office buildings have fitnessrooms with showers that some people use for this in the morning. So yeah, the bigger employers offer this and they often also have other amenities to get employees out of cars and onto bikes.
This is the vision plan of the Dutch government and city of Utrecht for the area to the right of the viewer at the start and end of the video (office area between the central train station and the old town). At page 35 it clearly identifies the needs for showers (so also clothing rooms) for some kinds of people traveling to work by bike because the distances people travel to work by bike is increasing due to the popularity e-bike. As well as charging points for e-bikes etc. So the government sees the need too.

That’s public space. Volunteers who do maintenance in collaboration with the council.

That is a scanning car. It's not police, but it is a government vehicle. The thing on top contains camera's that scan licence plates as it drives. It checks whether someone has paid for parking and if not, someone is dispatched to check it out and potentially write a fine. They'll know because paying for parking in any form requires filling in your licence plate number.

That is not a police car, they have different markings, the flashing lights is probably an artifact coming from the LED lights on the car, combined with the camera's frame rate. It might be parking enforcement and the contraption on the roof scans license plates to see if they payed for their parking. Might be something completely different though.
Traffic wardens. Non-police but adjeceant. The contraption on top is used to check for the license plates of parked cars against valid parking tickets.

How I wish Tasmania were like this , It's O.K. on the cycle ways , but riding to them has become a nightmare , I purchased and old Utility ( of which I am happily restoring ) , but to avoid incidents on the roads , I take my bike in the ute to the cycle track , to ride in relative safety !
It's like that in most of Nieuw Holland. It's fine for recreational rides - I can ride on greenways and cycle paths 20-70 km in 5 directions from my house in Adelaide - but as soon as you leave the main route to go somewhere, there is at most, a shitty part-time bike lane that doesn't link up properly and sometimes simply disappears, or nothing at all.

It’s amazing, beautiful, it seems to be a really pleasant activity. I wonder how does it work: do people ask their government for this? People have some say in designing?
If you are talking about the cycling infrastructure, the simple fact is that there is no political party in the Netherlands, left to right, that is against cycling, they are all for it. This secures enough funds to improve infrastructure. And since so many people use the bicycle and are used to a good infrastructure, they will complain if some traffic situation is not ideal or dangerous for cyclists, and expect the situation to be corrected, for which there are funds because of political goodwill, etc. Like a snowball effect. :-)
Yes people do often have a say in a construction project.
Construction and reconstruction plans are first judged in a commission of experts, are published, and every citizen can object to them. If objections are granted, plans have to be adjusted.
To prevent objections, municipalities organize meetings in the neighborhood to inform citizens about the plans, so they can adjust them to get approval from all who are most involved.
There looks to a outsider to be a lot of intrusion into the cycle lane with what looks like cars passing pretty closely 🤔.
Those roads only have one motor vehicle lane for two directions of travel. Cars have to borrow the cycle lane to pass, but cannot overtake bikes while doing so. Helps to keep traffic at a reasonable speed and keep drivers attentive.

@@tarquinmidwinter2056 yes its the same in my country Scotland, its just that cars will tend to squeeze past then be surprised almost by someone coming the other way and push there way in ,it happens every where.
This used to be a very different road just 5 years ago. People will need time to adjust. It gets calmer every year because more and more cars take smarter routes. Many of the cars will be people that haven't been there in ages and remember a very different traffic situation. They might get a bit edgy if they figured this was a quick route for cars.
Congratulations. Looks like in the Netherlands people are smart to vote for politicians that can do the work everyone wants. Here in Germany most people vote for establishment or right wing people that only made it to crime register records. I continue sharing your videos and all the good results that can be seen in NL but also in other European counties but I am not sure if we will ever reach the majority that still buys even larger diesel SUVs nowadays. 😭

@@rutgerb but most cycling infrastructure is implemented by the local municipality (gemeente) which are in most cities (including Utrecht) left wing. That being said the right wing parties in the Netherlands also like to invest in cycling infrastructure as it benefits everyone (including motor vehicles).

There are so many lines in the intersections. Most of them seem unnecessary
Those lines say something about what kind of road you are crossing. For instance at 4:27, you first cross a pedestrian crossing, then the triangles indicate that you have to give way if the traffic lights are out of order, then you cross a cycling lane (square markings), then you keep between the lines showing the cycle lane you're on. Imagine this for every side of the intersection. At first glance, it may be chaotic, but you learn to "read the lines" when you grow up here.
Again, at 10:58, you can see a ped crossing and a cycle lane crossing right after one another.

For example, imagine yourself with worse vision, it would be hard to differentiate them just from sight. Of course, you wouldn't be able to drive, but my point is that it's not very clear. Because a lot of modes are crammed into a tight space at awkward angles, there's more paint than usual. In larger intersections physical infrastructure and road textures will replace the lines. If this was the UK the same intersection would have twice as much paint on the ground. Because honestly, the UK is the last to talk in Europe when it comes to clear road marking systematic. Too much marking where you don't actually need it (entire cities are outfitted with double yellow lines, three kinds of markings AND flashing lights to indicate a simple zebra crossing) and not enough clarity when you need it (hard to easily differentiate give way markings, disconjointed gore markings). Just compare that 'Dutch roundabout' in Cambridge to basically any actual Dutch roundabout.
@@MrAronymousI agree in some way and disagree in another. It's clear what the lines represent, but what I'm saying is that there is little differentiation between them. So, in your example, the lines showing the crossings are the same type as what would be used to indicate different lanes on the road. I do think that UK ones aren't always the best, but they are very clear.
I do agree that the lines are confusing sometimes. But they aren't meant for people with poor vision. They are just mostly a visual mark for car drivers to show them there is a crossing.

The Catharijnesingel is still a nightmare for cyclists and so is the Maliesingel. 'We are working on it' is kind of a joke, after a decade of being a construction site. By the way, being allowed to turn right on red, doesn't mean being allowed to cycle on the sidewalk. That is never allowed. Sorry for the rant, but having lived in Utrecht for over 15 years and spending hundreds of hours on a bicycle in the city, I see only the same road anarchy that has been there since the late eighties. The city planners really could have done a better job.

@@var67 Not at all, there are barely any places which feel unsafe to bike through around the centre, all very relaxed and well done (with exception of some of the intersections). I only agree with you that the Hoog Catherine area in the beginning of the video still needs some work done but that’s exactly what’s happening at the moment so should be okay in some months.
