Welp, Fiveman is finally coming to DVD! Let's hope we get more Sentai DVDs on a regular basis from now on.

    • @MGMVE
      @MGMVE 2 года назад +5

If we do, it will only be because shout worked with Toei for the license of another season. Getting Fiveman, the least popular season in japan, means nothing as far as future seasons.
Sentai Nerds need to get this through their heads. Beggars can't be choosers here. You either get the series they come out with or you don't .Sentai DVDs by themselves are for nothing but a niche audience, not the general public. Sentai Fans are niche whether they see it or not.
As soon as Fiveman was announced you have a lot of nerds demanding this to be on bluray, better picture quality. Get real, Fiveman aired in the early 90s. Standard Definition was the common back then. Toei was not going back to put their old seasons in HD. Especially when Super Sentai has been declining in popularity in Japan. Kamen Rider gets a lot more attention and love because its very popular over there.
Another thing, fans HAS to realize. popular Seasons like Abaranger, and Dekaranger are not going to get licensed for cheap.
One more thing you have to consider Sentai did start airing certain series in HD around Shinkenger. I guarantee you the cost to bring those to America would be exceptionally high. They aired Boukenger in wide screen. Blurays for Seasons didn't start until they released the Shinkenger season.

@@MGMVE Maybe you could help shed some light on this. If you know we're the world's first and longest running channel of our kind, and have never once in our history posted misinformation (and work absurdly hard for our viewers) what made you think we'd suddenly change, and pick Fiveman to lie or mislead about? How would that even get us attention? Fiveman is not a popular search term for our channel, and I didn't even name it on the channel or in the tags. That would have been a fairly worthless thing to do for us to get views. Animation is what drives the channel, not quick news videos with a blurred image of a pre-Power Rangers DVD set. The comment you're responding to clearly states I did not know it would take that long, and now you can safely assume it had something to do with Hasbro. I don't know what to make of your comment when the "never official" set is up for pre-order, using the very same box art I teased. So, not a lot of sense is being made here, but you seem to speak for a lot of people. Why is this a thing people think when it disagrees with observable reality? In a weird sense with the separate licensing, it's a little poetic, if ironic, that the last modern series we got was Hurricanger. If things progressed the way it was going, Abaranger would've been the first series with the events of the movie being referenced in the main series. I wonder if they would've bothered getting those movie rights for continuity, or just not bothered.

Also there is another reason for that- if you look at the picture quality of the DVDs we got as opposed to the Toei domestic releases in Japan, based on my experience from at least the Megaranger one we got, is the picture quality feels like it was ripped out from the Toei Channel broadcasts of the shows (i.e. the strong lights gets darkened or blurred) like it's the best we'll ever get.
The picture quality is also to dissuade Japanese buyers from reverse importing them despite the difference in region code (there's a small chance Japanese users unlocked their DVD players to play Region 1 disks), despite the good price we have. In Japan you have to pay the same price we have here for 3 to 4 episodes per volume.

The only way I could ever see Sentai releases coming back is if Shout brings over Gokaiger and that does really well and they get better distribution and quality subs along with blu-ray. Still, considering just how popular Gokaiger is in Japan it might even be more expensive the other series meaning sales would need to be higher to even make it worth it. Hell even if Gokaiger did well the only other series I could see them wanting to bring over are Kyoryuger, ToQger, and MAYBE Kyuranger as those are popular amongst the Toku fans in western counties. In all honesty I think Hurricanger must have bombed really hard in sales for them to not want them to bring over more along with things like licensing. $60 is a high price point for US consumers, but considering that Japan's home video market is significantly more expensive, it's a good deal by comparison. Ultimately, I think slumping sales is why Shout Factory decided to pump the brakes on DVD Super Sentai releases. I certainly hope they release more Kamen Rider on Blu-ray, Zero-One was a good start, but they should use the Blu-ray masters and not the broadcast masters for the US release. Even if it's marked as fragile, I've still gotten DVD's that have been bouncing around the case for who knows how long, leading to a scratched disc and broken case. At least with Blu-Ray, the minor scratching doesn't matter that much, and it's "typically" a better quality. Sadly, seems like that was just a pipedream.

Someone very high up sent me the image and said it was okay to tease on my channel, but evidently, it was not okay with other people working there, and then something happened causing a long delay. As far as I knew, this was about to be announced. Had I known it'd be 3 1/2 years later, I certainly wouldn't have said anything.

I'm pretty surprised you're saying Toei don't remaster anything because these shows were filmed on videotape ! I do think you're wrong because I just bought a thorough book on Bioman which is a sentai series from 1984-1985 and it says on the book that it was filmed on a 16 mm film : just like most movies. So if Toei doesn't give good masters for these foreign DVDs it's because they don't bother remaster things. But could they if they really wanted too. I think the answer is YES ! But Toei for Sentai is no Paramount with Star Trek I guess

  • @NevByte

You mention about some people not getting these sets initially when they first came out.
I was one of them, but for a different reason. None of these sets got an official release outside of North America (in fact, the only Shout Factory sets relating to PR/Sentai we got here in the UK was MMPR under Manga UK) and I was still iffy about importing back then. The accessibility of the Ultraman Blu-Rays being region free got me more confident in doing so so I've slowly been picking up the Sentai DVDs, but as you mentioned in the video, the pricing means it is going to be slow.

I know this adds to more problems for Shout Factory but is not the main problem is that Shout Factory now owns all the rights to ALF. We all know ALF under Shout Factory is being new Blu-Ray releases but Shout Factory is also seeing all the properties that came with ALF. The sitcom, the two animated shows, The odd talk show ALF did on TV Land, and the made-for-TV film "Project ALF." Interesting video with a cool perspective! Didn't know the DVDs had such sub-par qualities, that's really bizarre- but less-so than the situation Shout is in trying to get them out. I had my eye on them, but only dipped in when they branched to Rider and released Kuuga. The straightforward production style with little-to-no extras for $50 felt a bit hard to swallow, but such an eventful release(and for one of my favorite series) couldn't go unsupported. I, too, wish the cases were of better quality though; when mine came in, many of the discs were loose inside 😬at least I got a poster for pre-ordering! 😄

For me the DVDs also kept coming out a little too quickly to keep up; Shout pumped out multiple sets spread out over a single year (with 2018 they put out 5 of the 12 sets). Maybe if Shout slowed down on the multi-year release of sets maybe sales would be better and we would still be getting sets released that would gradually transfer over to blu-ray discs as we get more of the newer seasons.

Plus I'm glad to have a few other favorites like Dairanger, Gingaman, Timeranger and Hurricanger. I think every fan should have their favorite season on DVD of possible. Pretty sure the Ohranger and Megaranger sets copied and pasted Millionfold Curiosity's fansubs. Of course there's always the Malaysian bootleg DVD's which I did research on out of curiousity. Abaranger through Gekiranger have inaccurate subs while Go-Onger onward have copied and pasted fansubs. I own the Gokaiger, Go-Busters and Kyoryuger sets and they have Overtime subs on them. I'll only get a bootleg if there's no official way to get a show on DVD or Blu Ray over here in the US and I asked Tsuyoshi Nonaka last Power Morphicon how Toei felt about Malaysia making bootleg DVD's of their shows and he said "We don't care. We think it's too small and inconvenient to worry about."

Zyuranger looks pretty bad even on my old CRT TV and when that happens I know something is up, it to be quaint is just far too dark in some scenes but there is a neat factor I can consider that is a good thing and that being is that it retained the film grain. The set has no DNR or smooth filtering so every bit of noise is still there, though I noticed some weird reverberating issues on the 3rd episode it seems the later episodes have little to no issues at all. I think as age old fans we have to agree that this likely would look better in SD HD but with the cost of loosing the grain and filtering the stuff out it likely would not really look that different... it was filmed in some dark settings so stuff well just looks dark though I noticed most of the battle and fighting scenes when they use the Dino Buckler look even better than Saban's method of brightening up the footage to crazy levels also I know the subtitle issues are pretty bad with weird changes to certain names and stuff but at the end of the day it's great to have a physical release of my all time fave series in it's original unaltered format at long last especially as the DVD set once went out of print and is now available once again.. oh nice explanation on the releases btw ^^

Shout used the most cheapest garbage DVD cases ever. A bootleg maker could provide a higher quality DVD case than Shout Factory. Whoever at Shout Factory designed those garbage cases deserves to be fired. Why spend almost $60 for a DVD with a really fragile crappy case.

For real. And its not just a Sentai problem. My Rocko’s Modern Life set was also in a broken case
