I am playing Half Life 2 in these days (never did before) and I must say that seeing Father Grigori entering the burning tomb while laughing and shooting at the zombies was ways more sad and depressing than eerie. I always wondered why he never left Ravenholm, but There's more than a PTSD imho. Probably those zombies were (and actually are, since they are conscious) people he used to live with in Ravenholm and he tries to end their suffer. Such a great example of character design. He only stays for a single level along with you, but his memory will never leave my mind since he amazed me.
The sirens that the miner town, Ravenholm, heard when it was attacked by the headcrabs on that day when the Combine rised upon their enemies. Now, this feeling rests in Gordon, while leaving such a creepy localization by the mine gate.
there's actually an unused sound effect which is grigori laughing and then screaming. Which implies that originally grigori was supposed to die right after that segment. But left his fate ambiguous instead.
The last scene of Father Grigori hearing the music kind of made me emotional, father Grigori was so well done his story well done and his personality well done. I got to even fight alongside Father Grigori in the game and we just shot Headcrab zombie after headcrab zombie.
I think we overlook the name of this soundtrack more than we should: “Requiem” in religious terms means to put something to rest or the resting of spirits. We know that headcrabs keep their victims alive and thus every headcrab zombie you kill. You’re putting the spirits to rest… also considering the fact grigiori was originally supposed to die at the end of the chapter via unused audio in the game files. With grigiori dead there’s no more people in ravenholm. Thus it’s rest. The requiem of ravenholm…
Imagine if there's a cutscene in half life 3 where this plays as you're about to get killed by a zombie, and then father Grigori appears out of nowhere and shoots it, then tags along with you.

In all honesty his chances of survival are legitimate, since Ravenholm is isolated and feared by many, one could assume Gregori could survive the citadel's explosion, any potential wounds or ailments would be curable using the tons of medications he still has spread out across the town.
