The caretaker had enough and decided to send them to a far relative and that is when they ran away and nearly died from starvation on the mountain until a hunter came and saved them. The hunter handed them over to Urokodaki and he trained them for the final selection and they passed (they never met Sabito, they arrived after Sabito died at the final selection) after being in the demon slayer core for 4 years, they became the Water Hashiras (Tsutako was 26 and Giyuu was 16)
