Also, I was one of those kids that got the genesis when it dropped back in 89 at all of 11 years old. I was actually thrown for a loop when I saw a review for the controller. Well done. I liked the ergo on this controller but the D pad was always slightly inferior to the NES's D pad (the only real other player on the market at the time). I kinda wish I still had my originals for this system, they're long gone at this point.

Actually that port on the laptop is a standard 9 pin serial port. Its usually only used for console stuff if you're a systems admin and some legacy devices but I'd bet the farm that if someone wrote a serial driver for the genesis controller it would work like magic.
The problem is finding someone with the comp sci experience to take the time to write the code.

PC Serial ports and Sega Genesis controllers are physically compatible (it fits if you plug it in) but they're not electrically compatible (the wires carry different signals) and you might damage your controller or your laptop. Because of this a driver can't simply be written for the controller, you need a special device and adapter or you need to take the controller apart and rewire everything from the buttons up.
