It’s been a while since I’ve witnessed lyricism as savage and impressive like the closing track: “I want us to be alone in your home / I wanna suck the marrow out ya bones / I wanna show you what I learned from the worst people I ever known” That gave me chills, how Billy borders on romanticising the act is something I haven’t been able to shake off.
Would Billy be the most outstanding? Because Earl's delivery sounds lethargic (even thought that's his niche now) And Ka doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, a bit somber... Milo is a poet and that would make us anticipate his verse so much.
People will be reading billy woods lyrics in 150 years as poetry and be able to understand the black American experience during this time in history perfectly. As well as the decline of a capitalist empire, this stuff is written on the cusp of history and records the ambiance of it so well.
@@veniceismine1 This. He will never get the appreciation he truly deserves until long past his death-that’s for sure. He will be the topic of many history, culture, and language arts classes within time.
I started listening to this album from your Great Albums of April video, and I near instantly fell in love with how dark, gritty, slow and dispondent it is. All I can picture when listening to the album is someone sitting in a cramped, dark, dank, roach infested 35th floor apartment, curled up on a broken twin sized mattress digging into any open patch of skin with a rusted, dull butter knife. I love it.
Red Dust might be one of my favorite billy songs I've heard thus far. On first listen (a pretty passive listen), when I heard bits of the last verse, it sounded romantic like he was yearning for someone he loved. And then when I read the lyrics, the romance and yearning was still there, but it's definitely not for someone he loves. Really jarring shift, but really cements it as an unforgettable track for me.
@@maelyndinky it sure does. Not sure if it's better than hiding places though. The beats on Aethiopes are more my cup of tea but hiding places has some very strong verses.
You only gave this album an eight because you enjoyed this album, found it to be a rewarding listening experience, and liked the sound and aesthetic. So disappointed.
How you gonna talk about Red Dust and not even mention the second verse? One of the most savage of the decade. "So close I can see a nick from shaving your neck so exposed, your throat would open like a hose Eyes wide open I would watch you go" Chills man
I loved this album. It felt like a depressed, defeatist twist on a Death Grips type of vibe. I wasn't into the dude before but this one definitely changed my mind. Spider Hole is a definite favourite.
This album's instumentals and flows remind me alot of Milo's So The Flies Don't Come, but Billy Woods really delivers a whole different vibe that captures the dark, confused structure of the beats... Hip hop album of the year for me so far
There is a spider, spider, spider He's deep in my soul He's been there for years He just won't let go He's laying around He's got a mean bite Now he's ready to fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!
This was so raw. Even an 8/10 doesn't do this justice in my opinion. It perfectly captures the feelings of sheer hopelessness and gloom many people feel in the neoliberal age. Loved the percussion/beats here too, something I didn't expect going into this album.
Review The Line "EP" from Zheani. It's part of a style of trap fans are calling fairy trap and also happens to contain one of the best diss tracks of the year and probably the decade, the target being Die Antwoord.
Second place steak knives is a reference to a scene from Glengarry Glen Ross. In the scene third place was, "ya fired." Hence the opening line of the song "You don't want to be in fourth place, man."
but Woods is not just full of one liners. I appreciated what Kenny Segal said on an early 2020 interview about how he just knew woods as a one liner guy, but as he worked with him, he started to see the bigger picture that Woods was painting in his lyrics.

"Second place gets steak knives" is a reference to the David Mamet play, "Glengarry Glen Ross." First place gets a Cadillac, and Fourth place is: "You're fired." Give it a read. You might enjoy it. You'll also see how eclectic and far-ranging Woods is.
Honestly, it gets better with time. Especially once the story and the narrative that runs through it start to poke out through the decrypted poetic lyrics, it’s a great album. The instrumentals make sense with the lyrical content and I’d say it does have a flow to it. It’s not as loose as it seems. I’d give it a 9 personally.
Game shows would give out steak knives but I’m pretty sure Woods is making a more direct Glengarry Glen Ross reference because he starts with saying you don’t want to be in fourth place (fired).

I was blown away by that whole verse. Red dust and checkpoints are definitely the best tracks on the record
Yes I completely agree, I must have played that second verse a hundred times. That’s a must know by heart track fer sure.
I just heard that Red Dust joint and that verse was haunting! Never heard words portray such a dark picture. Dope ish though
Red Dust is borderline horrorcore. It's so dark, yet so sad of a track. This whole album is masterful.
That whole song just makes me wanna cry. Nobody else writes lyrics like Woods
