When Peter O'Toole stares at Ali with those blue eyes of his and speaks those words, I am transfixed. Maurice Jarre's beautiful score is icing on a very delicious cake!
Omar Sharif says so much without uttering a single word. Notice how he stands out in the crowd, in his black robes walking tall and dignified. A prince among men. We all love Lawrence. How could you not love him even in the depths of his despair, burnout and PTSD? (or madness if you like..) But my heart belongs to Sharif Ali because his is so open 😍
You're absolutely correct! I was going to write Sharif looks awesome walking but thought it would seem like a silly thing to say. But you have the right of it--he walks tall and dignified, like a prince, buoyed of course by the happiness he feels in seeing Lawrence safely returned and filled with profound respect for the man''s courage.
I love the mirror between the two boys and the two men … the boys warmly embrace each other, wearing their hearts on their sleeves, while the men restrain themselves and exchange a canteen of water in a moment that more subtly conveys the exact same level of affection that the boys express so explicitly.
Two marvellous performances from both Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif ... You can detect the real life friendship they developed in the making of this Film, which reflects onto the screen. Sherif Ali's smile when Lawrence reappears is so genuine and for me a very emotional moment in the film. Awesome acting ... RIP Mr Sharif and Mr O'Toole and thank you

The most powerful desert scene I ever saw in my life, nothing has beat it. You really 'felt' their agony and thirst, then the relief. Its an amazing film.
It's also so touching that he's so happy to see lawrence come back safely. He was proven wrong and a lot of people wouldn't be so gracious, just out of spite.
At 0:40 Lawrence declines the water in order to receive it from Sherif Ali ibn el Kharish. The music perfectly matched to the scene! The C# leading-tone at 1:55 is so powerful and dramatic.

I first saw this on the big screen when I was eleven years old. I'm now 71+. It never gets old. No blue screen/no CGI. It's the pure magic of music, cinematography, and magnificent acting by all. If you want to test a person under 50 on their maturity and intellectual depth, have them watch this and get their reaction. It's a great method for vetting people, to determine who you want to share activities with.

There are several scenes that made me cry when I first saw this great film. At the end when Ouda says to Ali, "you love him!" Ali's answer makes me cry every time I see it.
There is a lot about that scene which is beautiful and so touching: Sharif Ali trying to work out Lawrence's parentage and Lawrence struggling to hold the tears as he admits he is illegitimate. Rather than shaming or rejecting him for his illegitimacy, Ali openly accepts him. He tells him he is free to choose his own name. Acceptance and respect for Lawrence at last. These are his people. When he falls asleep, Ali tenderly pulls the blanket over him before burning his uniform. It is a subtle but beautiful detail indicating that in Sharif Ali, Lawrence will know friendship from a man who loves him and will care for him. That is why Lawrence hurts him so much 😪
Everything is written. Our birth, time and place of death, the amount of wealth we'll accumulate, whether we are going to hell or paradise, whether we are Muslims or infidels. The point is God has all power. Even if we are driving our car we must ask help from God for success. And strive hard.

This scene in Lawrence In Arabia by Scott Anderson combines two different events, the rescue of a straddler during the march and the shooting later of someone else (in the film the same man to maintain the peace and the alliance). And SORRY LAWRENCE, THE FUTURE WAS WRITTEN IN LONDON AND PARIS, far away from the desert. In the end they used you, just like they used every British Officer and Soldier, Arab Sheik and Warrior, Jewish NILI Spy Ring and Zionist Supporter alike. By the way the story of his two Arab companions is really tragic and mirrors his transformation, I cried reading the book about their fate.
Wolfen443 - it's such a pity that the good intentions of the individual are so easily usurped by the malign intentions of the state. The west has been getting their foreign policy wrong in the middle east for the past 100 years - made an utter mess of the whole region. Shameful.
The perfect example of true leadership. The Arabs are held back by their prophesy and their beliefs that some things are written by God and must be accepted. Lawrence does the seemingly impossible and inspires them to do the same with three words - "Nothing is written."
Beautiful scene with a beautiful truth that "nothing is written"...… God gives us a sense of right and wrong and turns us loose to see how we live our lives...… he does not help nor hinder and will judge us in the end on how we tried, to the best of our ability, to lead good moral lives. God really could care less about "thoughts and prayers"... He wants us to DO something.
Something is always written or recorded or spoken off. The problem is the viewpoint of the recorder and the willingness of the audience to believe its truth or ignore its lies
this is only half the story; the man he rescued when the commander said, "then it is written" ... had to be shot later by Lawrence, in order to preserve peace... "everything is written" remained true. The man's fate was to die
In reality if Lawrence took a huge swig of water like that after being in the desert he would scream out in agony. The dehydration causes a contraction in the stomach and throat and only a few drops at a time can be swallowed.
+MiltonD Luckily, it's a movie so we don't have to worry about reality here. Screenwriters and directors have to do things like that all the time. Poetic/dramatic license. The point of the moment is to show the respect and admiration his friend had for Lawrence and that he had water ready. But it's nice you got to show how smart you are about the results of dehydration.
