    What's your take on Mastodon?

Basically, its not living up to what it could be and it doesn't seem to be moving in that direction.
Since BlueSky invites started landing my feed over on hachyderm has been dwindling pretty fast, but a lot of people never really made the jump from Twitter in the first place because of various issues (from signup being harder than it needs to be to not being able to search or find the topics or communities you want to engage with).
If you can find a server that's moderated and safer, like Hachyderm, then the experience is ok but mastodon in general never moved past the point of constantly talking about what was happening on Twitter, which is a bad sign. The environment also feels actively hostile as a content creator.
I'm not anti-mastodon by any means, and who knows what bluesky will turn into anyway, but mastodon definitely doesn't feel like a place that's keeping people around and the people are the valuable part, not the federation.

It's sad that people migrate to Bluesky.
The so-called "new protocol" isn't ready at all, it's powered by a capitalist company instead of open standards, the Terms of Service demonstrate that they own all your data (so it's not EU-friendly for stuff like GDPR whatsoever), people's blocklist is fully public, etc.
To me, Bluesky's early stage of existence is already super bad, I don't expect it to become better later, especially if it becomes popular and gives them more power and money.
    I'll stay on Mastodon.

      yeahh, +1
as if it isn't sad enough watching a community-led project lose to a VC-funded corporate silo once again, it's downright sad having it happen because the silo greenwashes itself as decentralized (because it *hopes* to be *partially* decentralized *sometime in the future* ). yikes.

So what exactly makes bluesky any better than twitter?

      It's not owned by Elon?

@@aviinl1 I thought twitter was one of the investors of bluesky? And by proxy elon as well.

@@Tiim Oh I have no idea, I've never even heard of BlueSky before this video, hence why I added the questionmark lol

right now, its basically just "not Twitter" and "not Mastodon". afaict Twitter owns no stake and Jack is one of 3 board members, but doesn't have an "active" role (like ceo, etc). The ceo is someone else.
Theoretically there's some more grand vision type stuff that may or may not pan out. Concretely the only things I've seen come out of that vision so far are people building all sorts of third party clients and such and some are implementing different timeline algorithms which is supported by the bluesky devs.
Its federated via the AT Protocol, but not blockchain related.
So tldr; its seems like where people are going right now and the people are the valuable part.

@@chrisbiscardi Jack is the only listed investor. Also, Bluesky has Terms of Use that would make Facebook blush. But for me, the worst of all is the gate keeping. I hate lines. Thanks, but no thanks.
