Thanks for the informative video! I had no idea the exhaust hose could contribute so much extra heat and inefficiency. I think it should be common for manufacturers to include insulated exhaust hoses or wraps with their portable air conditioners.
Exactly the problem I am having . My air conditioner is heating rather than cooling my living room for several days. Adjacent kitchen is cool and living room feels like a sauna. I was looking on Amazon for hose insulation and this video popped up. Thank you. Perfect timing!
This is good straightforward no-hype information with different practical ideas. Yesterday I helped a neighbor install a 10,000 BTUs portable air conditioner and we had to use the full five-foot length of extendable exhaust hose that was included. After trying out the new AC unit it was apparent that the exhaust hose can radiate noticeable heat back into the room so we are looking at options to insulate the hose. Thanks for the video! However I have to say that the Cool-Aide product offered at $48 seems overpriced.
Great video. The exhaust hose is usually right next to the cold coil air inlet behind the unit, so the room air before it enters the ac to be cooled first passes over the hot exhaust hose and picks up some heat from it. This makes the cold air output slightly warmer than it would be if the hose was insulated. Another huge issue in your case is the single exhaust ACs you’re using. They take more air from the room than they return due to hot exhaust that has to be dumped outside. This draws warm air into the house from outside. Dual hose ACs use the 2nd hose to intake air from outside that is then used to produce exhaust, so they don’t draw warm outside air into the house. Dual hose ACs are rare and more expensive but it’s possible to convert single into dual hose by making a crude manifold box around hot coil inlet and then plumbing a pipe into it. I’ve done it to both of my ACs and it works great. It’s also good to insulate the 2nd hose.
Thanks for this interesting comment ! I also want to turn my single hose into a double hose portable AC. Which material did you use to make the box, and how did you stick the box to the AC unit ?
SACC ratings account for dual hose vs single hose in regards to cooling ability (but not energy efficiency). Look at the SACC rating and consider your space and buy based on that
I was so bummed out when my new a/c couldn't keep the room cold! When troubleshooting the hose was the first suspect! Glad we weren't wrong! Hope this fixes it
@@AndreCastle before i got a chance to buy this, i was able to source a scrap piece of r6 insulated flexible duct that was being thrown out. the initial test worked very well. ironically, it has been a cold windy summer this year so far in the bay area of california so haven't had a need to run the ac to be able to test further
I purchased this product and it works great! Finally my portable AC unit is cooling the room. It was a hot July in New Jersey and I was very grateful for this product! Comes with zip-ties and fastens tight to the hose. Most hoses have fiber-glass, which I didn't want, but not this hose. What a difference!!
Yes finally insulation made specifically for a portable ac. I used an old insulated windshield car visor to insulate mine. And it makes a huge difference. Sell this thing on amazon and I will definitely buy.
@@dancrumbo5922 I use reflectix now. It's actual insulation that's like foiled bubble wrap. It's how some of those car visors are made from. It's also fairly cheap.
This explains a lot. I thought the exhaust hose was a bit too warm to the touch. I'll absolutely be insulating the hose ASAP. Thanks for the suggestions!
Thank you, thank you, so very much! We started to suspect that was the problem with our portable A/C unit. We just didn't know if this could be done to it, without some sort of damage to the unit.
I double insulated my AC's exhaust.... The first layer is a double sided aluminum radiant heat barrier. The second layer is the cool-aide duct sleeve. The result is the wrapped exhaust hose being cooler than the [double] glass window pane on any day the unit needs to be in use. Also helps when the unit is set to dehumidify only as even that would warm the room (though not as much as when cooling). The sleeve is a bit pricey, but, it has a much higher customer satisfaction rating than any other such sleeve on the market --- the highest quality one is actually more expensive than the Cool-Aide & barely effective. This sleeve is definitely worth the cost. Appreciate the video! Thanks for taking the time to inform folks.... The advertising for this product needs to come up to the level of quality of the product, though ;)
Thank you, I went and bought the insulation and then someone said not to do, but like your video that exactly what I though, bc the hose is so warm it warms the room we're trying to cool. I'd rather have that white wrap, all I could find (at Lowe's) was the silver roll.
Perfect. I have been wrapping sweaters and stuff around mine, remembering that with a woodstove, the radiant heat from the pipe is a good thing! But here it is a very bad thing. I'm gonna do better, but I was on the right track... thanks for the tips!
2021 review! Yes this is still available. So I order one to try out. Got tired of the insulation sleeve with fiberglass and all duct tape to seal up. So look for something else and saw this video. Wonder if still current since reviews where old. I order and hot in 3 business days and easy to attach to hose of ac. Zip ties even are re attach able. Ran portable ac and just like video and cool to the touch. So bought another today for other units.
Just ordered one! Using a portable unit while waiting to get my main HVAC replaced. My pipe is super hot right now, can't wait to get to get this one it.
William Dickerson it honestly works better than I could have imagined. I was super skeptical, but you can’t feel any heat on the outside of the insulation. Crazy!!! Highly recommend. I truly think this guy should be selling these at the big box stores right alongside the units because it does exactly what it’s supposed to do.
Thanks for the quick reply!!. I went the DIY route and it's working pretty good, but I just like the aesthetics of the sleeve better. I also thought about the fact of ease of installation vs the wrapping and tape route. Once again, thanks for the quick reply. I'm putting in the order Monday.
Yea, it truly looks great on there. I was going to go the DIY route as well and at least the materials I thought I would need was going to be $35+. I figured I would just go the plug and play route and I'm 100% satisfied with it.
Just saw this video after having a portable AC for years, finally cut my hose short, and insulated it w/ a insulated shopping bag. LOL Didn't want to wait.
@@toniapaulsen3477 Having the exact length and insulating it reduces the amount of heat coming off the hose. I changed this to a window unit ever since though. The portable AC was really bad on electricity. A smaller window unit is able to keep the room much cooler and quieter.
An added benefit is that it keeps the warm outside air from radiating into the room through the hose when the unit isn't in use, if you leave it set up all the time.
I have a 3.5 kW unit I wrapped in tontine insulation car windscreen visor wrapped with aluminium tape like what you did but still get a lot of heat coming off the insulated duct. I now have a commercial aircon flexible duct. Bigger in diameter and will fit an exhaust fan to get rid of hot air quicker as these portable Ac units only have one fan and the unit struggles in Australian heat. Especially when it gets to over 42 degrees Celsius with the sun blaring on my window lol. I even put core flute on my fascia outside but still hot as hell. I will sell the unit and buy a 1.5 kW window mount and just make a table high enough to butt the unit to the window, fit a small pump to drain the water outside. Cheers
My opinion: money. Manufacturing an insulation product that doesn't use fiberglass, is not too unattractive, is flexible and effective is relatively complicated and expensive. If there was a big demand for the insulation I believe A/C manufacturers would make them. But as of now, people either aren't aware of the heat radiation problem, or they don't care. So "tooling up" to manufacture a product where the demand isn't widespread isn't an attractive business prospect.
@@arthurwilson6280 : The demand for insulation won't be widespread if it isn't marketed with the sales of the air conditioners. Buyers have to know of its existence first.
Great video and very informative. Just bought a Delonghi portable AC unit just in time for the historic heat wave we're having here in the NW. The exhaust hose gets super hot, and with outside temps 100+, cooling performance is disappointing. Hopefully one of these methods will help. The Cool-Aide sleeve looks good.

I had the same question. I found this site: planetaides.com/
You are probably better of with do it yourself suggestions as the shipping would probably not be worth it.
De'Longhi sells the same product for the same price
The unit from Delonghi is made of fabric. The Cool-Aide is better in that it traps the air in an air tight pocket that is heat sealed.
Too bad the most effective insulators force one to give up a lot of hose flexibility. And they're rather unsightly.
Or use a dryer vent pipe
those things are an eye sore either way...
