Count me among those who have doubts about the culpability of Walter Bolton. Too many unknowns and unsatisfactorily answered questions. Why would he deplete his finances for his wife's medical care while poisoning her and then agree to a post mortem after her death? Thank you Brief Case for today's story. I was engrossed from beginning to end.

If he did do it then he probably did it more than likely to make it look like it wasn't him and even use it as a case to prove a point and he probably consented to the autopsy because if he said no then they will just do it anyway as that will look suspicious and that would be argued against him. Personally I think their wasn't enough evidence it was cirmstantal at best and even then it wasn't strong evidence like how do they know if it was him or her sister .....if it was just him at the house and around his wife then yeah that's quite strong evidence if that makes sense

It was the sister. There was no way he'd authorize an autopsy and go to the trouble and money to send her to a care facility. I'm surprise his lawyer didn't use this aspect in court.

I watched and listened to the narration twice: most definitely the sister did it!
She didn't want to lose another man and got rid of the "obstacle " : her sister.
It's despicable to have a relationship with your sister's husband who did nothing than to support and help you out...far much worse to kill her out of jealousy and to live a life that didn't belong to her.
I sincerely pray her soul never finds peace.

I wondered why it wasn’t questioned as to why he would spend their life savings to have Beatrice treated at a private hospital. I somewhat questioned the untimely death of her sister Lilith that went unexplained. Regardless, I think there was enough reasonable doubt to find him not guilty. 🤷‍♀️

I feel like the defence was really lacking: there was plenty of details that could have helped Walter's case but were not presented to the court. The fact he spent all of his money on hospital bills, the autopsy, the fact he wasn't the only one with a motive and opportunities to poison her...

    • @irena4545

@@PaleMagnolia Not to mention that it all hung on the word of the sister... Poor Beatrice was intentionally poisoned, of that I have no doubt, I just can't decide if it was the husband or the sister. The bills and the autopsy seem to point towards his innocence, but if he was the poisoner, failing to have his wife treated and examined would be seen as suspicious, so I really don't know.

I wonder if his defense attorney even brought up those questions at trial? I mean to me, that Walter had no problem spending all their money so she could get the best care and then readily agreeing to an autopsy because he really wanted to know what killed her are pretty compelling reasons he was innocent. I also question if the detective, when Florence came into the station and confessed to the affair, if the detective explored that any further. Did the affair end mutually or could Florence have been a woman scorned? Walter probably felt very guilty about the affair.

Based on the fact that he spent his life's savings to have her treated and that he wanted an autopsy to find the cause of her death, I suspect an innocent man may have been executed. Yes, I believe they executed an innocent man. Innocent of murder. But not innocent of the cause of her murder... which was having *Florence*, a BLACK WIDOW hanging round the place while he had an affair with her. She was the cause of her other sister's death and two husbands and then took Beatrice's life as well. It seems no one was safe around her. Poor Walter likely had no clue what he had gotten himself into trying to help her financially and then was seduced by her. If Walter had known WHY Beatrice was ill, why would he have spent SOOO much of their money on doctors and trying to figure out what was wrong? I don't believe he knew! The sheep product was on hand because of his work and Florence knew EXACTLY what to do with it. Such an evil woman! I am not surprised she took her own life when she had no one left to murder or frame. I do believe Walter was executed for a crime he did not commit. Thank you for another riveting tale, Brief Case. 💼 Have a wonderful week! (Resa)

Intriguing BC. I question why Walter would have spent his life savings for his wife to have private medical treatment if it was his intentions to kill her. 🤔 Therefore, had I been a member of the jury I feel I would’ve concluded he was innocent and that perhaps his wife’s other conditions made her more susceptible to the contamination in the water or perhaps her sister did play a role in her death and had added minor amounts of the solution to any drinks/food she had prepared for her. Either way it’s tragic that this obviously hard working couple met their deaths in the way they did.

I think there was enough doubt to find him not guilty, why would he spend their life savings on hospitals to get her better. Like it was pointed out in the video why would he agree to an autopsy if he was the one that poisoned her. He could have just said no and that would have been that if he was in fact guilty.

a thing which hit me is that all ppl had arsenic in them from the drinking water, the wife Beatrice was diabetic, diabetics in general drink alot more then other ppl because they are always thirsty it would have given her a larger dose of arsenic. I am self a diabetic so my thirst was how we found out i was diabetic, without medicine i drink easy 6-9 liter water per day, with medication i still drink alot 3-4 liter. I simply think their contaminated drinking water was the culprit.

Thanks for another interesting one BC; it does seem like a miscarriage of justice to me, at least there was reasonable doubt. I am strongly against the death penalty as miscarriages of justice do occur. Some may remember the case of Stefan Kiszko, a man with learning difficulties who was jailed for 16 years for the killing of a young girl, but DNA evidence later cleared him (DNA testing was not available at the time of his trial). Just over a decade previously he would have been hanged for that.

I wonder why they didn't think of the fact that he wanted the autopsy to explain why she died. That alone raised reasonable doubt to his guilt. But I started to be suspicious of Florence when their sister died so young, and her death couldn't be explained. And her second husband supposedly dying from a heart attack. I'm in the group who believes Walter was innocent and Florence was the guilty one.

  • @HanktheWonderDog

I would have thought Florence's motive to kill her sister much stronger than Walter's as he did spend all that money and agreed to an autopsy. He may have been a narcissist as some claim, but where is that evidence? There was evidence to support that someone used arsenic to kill- but who would have had the greater motive- the hard working man who worked side by side with his wife- even making sure, whatever the cost that she get the best treatment, or the sister who stood to gain a husband once Beatrice was out of the way? Thought provoking, thank you for this bewildering tale BC.

    Good morning!
This was an interesting case. I think he was innocent because if you think about it why would he allow them to do an autopsy and why would he spend so much money to have her stay in the hospital to find out what was wrong with her? Either he thought they wouldn’t find the arsenic or he’s innocent. I just really have a bad feeling about this sister and why she burned the diary. She did have something to gain because not only was she having an affair he was also giving her money.
Many times people have been wrongly convicted and executed and I believe this is one of those cases. Sadly, we’ll never know. On the other hand of that she got better while she was in the hospital but I always seem to be sick when she came home. Hey very sad case all the way around.
I hope you have a great week and will be back on Monday to hear another great story
    Bless 🇬🇧🇵🇭

He spent their lifesavings on a private hospital for her, I dont see someone who wanted her dead doing that. I think the sister was manipulating him for money and thought she could get more if her sister was out the way. Plus she had 2 mysterious deaths already associated with her.

  • @lisageiger9841

P.S. why would he fight so hard to save her? I think her sister didn’t like him spending all that money on her and tried to get rid of her herself. Maybe not because others had it in there systems too. She may have done that to keep the focus off of her. Another wonderful case. I so love you B.C. Thank you again for your gift you share with us. Beatrice had a history of medical issues. Also, it doesn't make sense for Walter to consent to an autopsy knowing that he poisoned her. It's possible that he want to raise suspicion if he refused. But, he also didn't flee New Zealand.
