I met this woman at a party in LA in the early 90's. She was introduced to me as Lita Grey Chaplin as she apparently still used the famous name despite two subsequent husbands. She stuck me as quite startlingly bitter and rather vicious when I asked her how she felt about the Richard Attenborough Biopic that was being shot at the time. I suspect this is why she appears as a character in that film for less than a minute when she she should have featured as a very important chapter. She was very clear about how she loathed Chaplin and she was clearly ready and indeed eager to sue the filmmakers for the slightest misrepresentation. She was completely different to the rather gentle soul that she reveals here. Sad there seemed to be no mellowing perspective of time. Perhaps blaming him for all her misery was easier than laying some (if not all) the responsibility of the serious abuse that was done to her by her Mother who groomed and pimped her so disgustingly as a young girl. Interestingly, Kenneth Anger who wrote a very scathing account of the marriage - and her in particular - in one of his 'Hollywood Babylon" books was also at the party. They remained on opposite sides of the room. A Hollywood evening to remember.
Philip phillips I think she had three more marriages after Chaplin. It would seem like she would kind of let it go after a record financial settlement, three other husbands, and six decades.
Very interesting I knew Chaplin slightly he lived near my parents in Switzerland and I liked him , My Sisters thought he was a horrible creep and expressed concern for his then wife Oona who they thought he bullied ,he was a pretty old man by then but if my Sisters were right that he was a manipulative bully with a unhealthy interest in young girls , the lady's bitterness might have been justified .
5888max agreed. Her bitterness is justified. From what I read about Chaplin’s sexual life, your sisters’ gut feelings about him were probably right. He was always into women under 20. Oona was 19 when he married her and he was decades older. He slept with Lita when she was 14 or 15 and impregnated her.
I completely agree, I just don't completely see anything amazing about Oona, but I really do believe that he loved Lita, even if it didn't last forever. I heard somewhere that talked her out of suicide many years after their divorce so he must have cared for her, especially after their divorce was so messy!
Thank you so much for this! Chaplin being private and elusive (and persecuted) in his later life, most media available on him focuses on (his Obvious) genius. We all know most of this already. Her account focuses on the relationship between his personal melancholies and his OWN special talents. Rare, indeed!
She's awfully cute at 2:50, but I have to say that when a 12-yr. old girl kisses Charlie on or near the lips, you pretty much know what to expect later. I suspect Kenneth Anger's appraisal of Lita's mother as greedy is accurate. But I disagree with his dismissing her as a moron because she had a low forehead. She is- I guess around 85 here- intelligent and in complete control of her faculties, bringing forth certain memories, withholding others.
heyy great video, where it is from? i know that this interview appear in differents documentaries about charlie but always the interview is cut thank for the complete interview ;)
They married in Empalme, a suburb of Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico on November 25, 1924. Yes, so she is a descendant of the Lugos but her mother was actually Carrillo, a very common Mexican last name.
Lita had a great singing voice,... it sad becuse she could done so much ,.. i dont think Charlie messed her up i think t was Lita mother and her family they wear crazy and pushed her into the stardom Lita mother pimped her dauhter so shamful,.....
What do you expect to a then 16 year old girl. I love Chaplin but the dude was 35! he needed to pay for child support. Plus, he needed to pay for other services because he was married her too.
Her Hispanic grandmother was born in California not Mexico, although her Hispanic ancestors (the Lugos) had migrated to California from Mexico generations before (even though some people are now trying to claim they arrived in California directly from Spain which is not the case).
@@jamesa6494they were considered Californios. I’ve met several Californios and yes, they consider themselves Mexican-American. Their families migrated from a present-day Mexican state to California that was considered Mexican land for decades. Their culture was considered Mexican before USA took the state. Lita was said to be Mexican-American for years but she said she was “Spanish”, poor lady who seemed very bitter.
she was the inspiration for the book LOLITA she really was the first lolita. i am addicted to lilita/charlie though she was his strongest love i think-1st mother of his children, 1st REAL, LOVED wife, and young obsesession. He settled for oona.
She's kind of skimping on the "Charlie and I got married part". Charlie knocked up an underage girl and had to elope to Mexico. Not judging, just some women don't own up.
I can only dream how beautiful Los Angeles must have been back in the 1920’s
she seems a very nice innocent girl, i felt bad for her

I just wanted to say thanks for sharing your personal experience with Lita - very interesting.

On what he saw in Lita, I think it was her innocence.

It's usually the case that the public comes to know just a fraction of what went on.
@@marcbarber2209 Why the US gov didn't use it against him in 1947 when the war was at its peak?they could have jailed him then if it was true.

She spent all his money from the divorce and had to work at a department store in the 70's and 80's. to earn a living despite subsequent marriages.
