UPDATE: One of my birds that I had shipped back from a futurity race at the end of the season came back with a very bad case of mites, feather lice and louse flies. I made a bucket with 5 tablespoons of borax to about 4.5 gallons of water and dipped the pigeon in the solution every other day for a total of 4 treatments then kept her isolated in a separate cage for a while. And just incase, I dipped all my other birds once in the solution. After about a week, all the parasites began falling off and soon they were all gone. It has been 6 months since then and I haven't seen any sign of those parasites in any of my birds.
This video is oddly so relaxing for some reason. I think its the way he is calm and explaining it in process, every step of the way with a soothing voice lmao I love this video! I think I like the fact that in order to get rid of the lice in that pigeons feather, even the sun was contributing to it lol (warming up the water)
Thank you very much for this information! I just came into possession of a lost racing pigeon (I believe?) and found out he has feather lice. This is a great tip!
Thank you so much for the video. I have a sweet little bird who has something white crawling on her. I want to get rid of it FAST and naturally preferably! Borax sounds perfect.
The borax dries & cracks the exoskeleton of the lice & mites making it impossible for them to maintain any fluids or moisture dehydrating & killing them. Soapy water applied to the feathers will work as well.
Just buy a pyrethroid based insecticide. It's way easier, faster and very effective againts all sort of bugs. It's safe for birds, they have good resistance againts pyrethroids.
Actually borax is one of the safest ways to do this. Borax is an all natural product sodium borate it dries out the pest exoskeleton and it’s not harmful to the birds at all. I use this in my pool as well for alkaline levels and ph why spend crazy money on chemicals this stuff works great.
Do you think you can use borax on budgies as well ? As I guess all birds get lice and mites . I may sound silly but I would like our new bird to be comfortable and its cares too . Trank you.
Would this treatment also work for mites? A million years ago, when I was a kid, you could send in box tops and a small fee and get a 20 mule team model that needed to be assembled. Lost that a long time ago - too bad. Thank you for your videos. I'm just rescuing ferral (not federal...stupid spell correct) pigeons right now.
Ok so i have a bird and i. Wanted to tell you that does borax also can be baking soda Beacuse u have baking spda and i don't know if baking soda can also be
Hey there, Beautiful pigeon. I did exactly what you said and got the same brand and everything but mine's not dissolving it's been way past an hour and it's not dissolving it's floating down to the bottom I used to hot water as well what do you think the problem is?
Thank you for the video! Do you know how to deal with louse flies or flat flies? My doves have it and drives them crazy. We look for something around, but nothing that help and get rid of these flies. Please help.
ShortyPen Homing Pigeons i did the borax bath after I watched your video. I saw the louse fly immediately after the bath. The flies were still there about three days after the bath, but I haven’t seen them in the last two days. I hope that borax bath work to get rid of the flies.🙏🏻

Hello ShortyPen Homing Pigeons! Thank you so much for sharing this! It might be my last hope! Is it any possibility that you know this treatment to help the bird if the mites are quills mites? Those parasites that live inside the quills and that eats the keratin out the feathers. They are so hard to reach.. I have an indian ring neck which is almost bald :( He scratches all day long.. and we already tried Stronghold and other solutions. They are simply not working. We also do not have avian vets in Romania. I would appreciate so much any helping word. Thank you!
Hello! I will let you know about the results. For now , i decided to wait a couple of days or maybe a week or 2 as the vet applied just yesterday the 3rd treatment with StrongHold. Not sure how toxic it can be if i mix the procedures. Thank you so much!
I washed them with a salt of water... just checked after a day and there was none. Still let me know if you hear anything negative about using salt and water to get rid of lice an mit. Thank you
Does it actually get rid of them permanent or is this just a way to keep their numbers low? I have a rescued white racing pigeon in my house im gonna try to domesticate more than it is.
+ShortyPen Homing Pigeons great! Thanks for your reply! What about flat flies? Some of these flat looking flies hide in my doves wings but when I try and get them they just sneak under the wings and hide..do you know anything about treating those? Also if the bird lice get into the house what's the best way of removing?

Does it work for doves? because a dove in my balcony was born there and anything, it doesn't mind too much if I touch it but when I searched it had bugs around the chest area, and can I use table salt instead?
+ShortyPen Homing Pigeons Well, I just tried it today. I had trouble washing he/she (dont know the gender) as it kept splashing water all over me. It really did work!
+ShortyPen Homing Pigeons Yeah, it was a mistake. The other birds were wild/untamed, so I think that was the reason the lice came back. I tried washing it again, but right after I left it in where it sleeps, the bugs came back. I don't think the salt was very effective, Can I use any other thing similar to borax? because I don't think they sell it here in the UK.
i have a Indian Ring neck, and he is losing his feathers in his neck, more and more. his chest is naked, do you perhaps know what it is?? And what can i do??
