  • Bringing Healthcare to Lelep-06, Taplejung: Recap of Phaktalung Rural Municipality Medical Camp
In February 2024, our objective was straightforward: to conduct a cost-free health camp in an area lacking medical resources and address the healthcare disparity. Let’s take a look back at the meaningful journey of our Free Medical Camp in Lelep-06, Taplejung, where committed professionals and volunteers came together to support a community in need.
    Introduction to the Campaign:
Rural health camps are lifelines for regions devoid of permanent medical facilities. Our joint initiative with Elite Exped and Helping Hand Community Hospital aimed to reach the inaccessible corners of Phaktalung Rural Municipality, nestled amidst the majestic Kumbhakarna Himalayas. Lelep, birthplace of renowned mountaineer Mingma David Sherpa, became the focal point for our camp, offering vital healthcare services to a diverse population.
    Understanding the Region:
Phaktalung Rural Municipality boasts a tapestry of ethnic diversity, with Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, and Gurung communities weaving its cultural fabric. Spread across treacherous terrains, access to basic healthcare is a distant dream for many. Our camp served as a beacon of hope for these underserved populations, offering a spectrum of medical expertise.
    Key Findings and Insights:
In a thorough examination of 447 patients, we uncovered startling insights into rural health:
    * Disease Distribution: From general medicine to orthopedics, gynecology, and pediatrics, our team addressed a myriad of health concerns.
    * Prevalence of Non-Communicable Diseases: Contrary to expectations, the rural populace exhibited an 8% prevalence of non-communicable diseases, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive healthcare interventions.
    * Critical Cases Identified: Neglected fractures, hypertension, and diabetic conditions were among the critical cases identified, necessitating immediate attention and referrals to higher centers.
    * Community Health Literacy: Despite geographical barriers, the community showcased commendable health literacy, actively participating in the camp and accessing vital healthcare services.
    Community Collaboration and Impact:
The success of our camp was a testament to community collaboration. Local leaders, educators, and volunteers worked hand-in-hand with our medical team to ensure seamless operations. Essential medicines, equipment, and medical interventions were provided free of cost, empowering the community to take charge of their health.
    Looking Ahead:
As we reflect on the impact of our medical camp, our commitment to rural healthcare remains unwavering. Together, we strive to build a healthier, more resilient future for the people of Phaktalung Rural Municipality and beyond.

As a family Doctor in a western country, we do so much medical overtreatment. This is really nice to watch, thank you.
