”En snara av guld” (a golden noose) is the story about the Finnish daughter Skjalv who gets abducted and is forced to marry King Agne - the same man that killed her father. She finally gets her revenge on Agne and when the new day dawns, the King gets his final rest high up in the trees. ”En snara av guld” is the most gripping video we have ever made and we are so amazingly proud of how both the song and video came out. And a father’s heart couldn’t pound any stronger than today since the song features Eriks youngest daughter Lea on vocals and his other daughter Tuva plays Skjalv in the video. Wow. Once again, Månegarm raise the bar for Norse pagan Metal. They truly honour their heritage, which I partly share (Orkney Scots on my mother's side), but don't flinch from depicting the machinations and shitty politics and bartering of women that our ancestors dealt in. I fkn love these guys! Their music is so carefully crafted, nuanced, layered. They are brilliant storytellers, and can still kick yer fkn ass in the Metal arena!

Wow, recognized that story from Ynglinga Saga (well, the album is named "fate of the Ynglinga family", stupid me). King Agne deserved his fate for what he did to Skjalv, but that necklace (the noose of gold) was also cursed ever since the Agne's forefather Visbur had it. Greed and evil deeds will create suffering for the generations to come, wisdom of the ages.
Well, evil deeds seem to be the Ynglingar's sign. Hence their last offspring Ingjald's second name: the evil (Illråde or dt. Übelstifter)

Note: It is written in a slightly older variant of Swedish, some words are not commonly used today, likely to give it that viking vibe. From what I can tell it is about a young girl, she could be a princess, it is not clear. Her father is killed and she is forced to wed his killer, but she is sworn to avenge her father so she goes through with the ceremony, waits to get his father's killer alone on the wedding night, stabs him and then proceeds to hang him in his own golden necklace.

Got it recommended yesterday. So good, i listened to Mårnegarme the whole evening without skipping forward. First band that managed this in a long time, not one weak song, this is darn good stuff that fits damn well between Amon Amarth and Bathory.

Napalm and Nuclear Blast are the reason why I don't listen to American music anymore. They introduce me to a lot of good bands outside of the usa.
This song is gorgeous, haunting, powerful, building up to an ending that leaves you gasping for breath more every time you listen. Very few other songs have had this effect on me; F.E.V.E.R. from Orden Ogan comes to mind. So I'd heard this several times and it was starting to grow on me, but the first time I really listened in depth, and heard that MOMENT at 3:45 where the clean and growly vocals start to harmonize...OMFG I almost drove off the road, lol!!! Many bands have tried it but only you have succeeded in achieving the absolute perfect balance between harmony and growl. Your voices blend so perfectly it's unbelievable. I'll see you on 70k Tons of Metal in 2 weeks, and though I've only known you since December, you're my #1 band this year!! :) :) :)
P.S. As I was listening obsessively this winter to this song, Orden Ogan's "Come with me to the other side" kept popping into my head. I'd never felt strongly one way or another about that song before, but finally gave in and listened...and realized it's almost *exactly* the same chordal progression for the main melody, lol! I don't know if it was intentional or not, but it's almost like they gave it a good first run...and then you realized its full potential. WELL DONE SIRS!!!

@@hiTocopter if lyrics would have defined the genres, then Amon Amarth would've ended up as Viking metal. But each segment, be it vocals, melody, theme, composition and lyrics can have distinct elements peculiar to a particular genre, without the total music being that very genre. Black metal lyrics in effect have to be anti religion, or more specifically, blasphemous and anti Christ, did Manegarm go full blasphemous? Then sure they'd be black.
