Best bone-conduction headphones 2023 - incl. Shokz Openrun Pro, Naenka Runner Diver, Haylou PurFree

- Is it really worth paying top whack for a decent pair of bone-conduction headphones? I was gifted the £160 Shokz Openrun Pro bone conduction headphones (bonephones) in 2022, see review link below, but I've since been curious as to how they compare to lower priced bonephones. So I bought a £19 and a £60 pair off Amazon, and I was sent the £100 Haylou PurFree BC01 and £140 Naenka Runner Diver to try too. The results were both surprising, and unsurprising! Scroll down for links to buy.

I have watched over 100 bone conduction headphone reviews, and .. WOW! You pack more relevant product specific details into 2 minutes than anyone who doesn't even cover them in 10. I'm just halfway through your video. Great unboxing style.... I'm going to marry a Red-head!
Praise indeed MJ, thanks! I am a journalist so hopefully I know what I'm doing on the reviews front, glad you found it helpful and good luck in your quest to marry a red head, the very best of all the hair colours of course ;)
I am in a different boat for wanting bone conduction headphones. I am a stay-at-home dad and I want to be able to listen to music and podcasts or audiobooks while doing chores, but I still need to be able to hear my kids if they start to cry during their naps or if they are trying to talk to me. I went back and forth between the OpenRun and the OpenRun Pros. At first I was going to go with the Pros but realized that with the volume I kept them at while doing housework while listening for kids, the extra bass wasn't a bonus for me. So I went with the OpenRun and returned the OpenRun Pros. I do have two more coming to try out, including the Haylou ones. So we will see.
Hey Preston, cool, I also use these a lot in the house while doing chores and being with my toddler, I hope you find the perfect on for you soon, sounds like you are doing great research :)
Fantastic review. Extremely helpful. Many thanks from across the pond!
Glad it was helpful Matt! Claire
Thanks for the great review! I don’t usually listen to music when I run, but as I approach my goal of doing an ultra marathon, I see that it is definitely needed to keep the inspiration up and the boredom at bay, especially on those long, slow runs. I don’t usually go in for high tech, but it’s good to know that in this case, spending the extra money is worth it. I know what I’m asking for this birthday!
Thanks Heather, glad you found this review useful, I hope you get them for your bday! You could always as a few people to chip in :)
Thank you for this video.
Glad it was helpful!
Cool review Claire ! Another excellent and honest comparison between the several brands of headphones that was very helpful for people to decide which is best .
Thanks AC glad you liked this one, it was very interesting to review them all
Well done! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I was given the open run pros at Christmas, I’ve warn them for all my runs. Comfortable and great sound for
Music and podcasts…. Battery life is great too
Great to hear! They are my faves too :)
Thanks for this, which is timely as I am considering investing
Hope it helps you Joanna, the Shokz Pros are defo a cut above the rest, take a look here amzn.to/3JlfZps or see if there are any second hand on eBay too, you might get lucky!
Excellent Review
Thanks glad it helped you!
Agh! Great review, but lost my old cheap pair a couple of months ago and took the plunge on a set of H20 Tri multisport. Couldn't quite justify £160 and will refuse all offers of a trial!
The ones I have are better than I had, also has storage (8GB) as well as rated to IPX8.
Ha ha ah, yes Dave don't try the Shokz Openrun Pro, you'll want to go over to the dark side! 8GB storage is grand tho, the Pros aren't for swimming at all so for tri you defo need that IPX8!
Thanks!
Aw thank you so much, that is really kind of you!
Bone conduction is like magic! I've never listened to music while running until my marathon training long runs. But for most of my trail training I still don't listen to anything, preferring the sounds of the forest. The best part of these headphones is using them throughout the day for walks and other non-training times when I want music. Thanks for these reviews- I may get a cheaper pair if my shokz whenever my shock need replacing.
Glad you liked it David, I too never used headphones until these bonephone style ones came along, I wear them all the time round the house too doing chores! A podcast makes it more interesting. Claire
I have the Aftershockz but a cheaper model, around £80. When I tried my friend’s £160 pair it was hard not
To buy those but budget was a consideration. I’ve had them 3 years and I’m still pleased with them
I had the Aftershokz Aeropex before that, they were really good, I would have been totally happy with them if they hadn't sent me the next pair up, they really are worth it - Santa 2023...!
My brother has ear issues (not hearing, more like repeat infections). He's used regular Bluetooth, in-ear, big closed-back, and is looking at bone conduction. I think the Pros will be great for him. He runs, cycles, commutes although in a relatively noisy environment, and listens to podcast at home while cooking and stuff.
Yup, I'll get him the pros. And probably grab a pair for myself. Would work well with my home office, not sure about the mic though, but will see.
They are defo the best of the bone-conduction offerings but can be a bit quiet in noisy environments, have you also seen my open-ear review here? That might be of interest to your brother? ruclips.net/video/t-OsvbhQd2k/видео.html
Very detailed review video! I think you can pay attention to the Wissonly Hi Runner. Most of its performance is as good as the few products in your video, but it has a higher waterproof level (IPX8), a more powerful MP3 mode (with 32GB built-in storage), and performs well both in running and swimming. From my personal experience, it's very good! You know, I used to use Shokz, but later I switched to Wissonly.
Oh cool thanks for that info Jack, I haven't heard of that brand before, are you in the UK?
@@wildgingerruns No, I am in California
@@user-yd4nk1es6n Ah that would explain why I haven't heard of that brand I think then. Thanks for suggesting it!
Thanks for the review. I went for the Shokz Open Run, rather than the Pro due to its improved water rating. They are certainly excellent sound quality.
Cool! Hope you like them! It's a shame the Pros aren't waterproof isn't it!
Thanks that's a really helpful review. I was hoping that Shokz might have had a discount for their products at the London Marathon exhibition but unfortunately not. 10% off I might have bought a pair 20% I would have definitely bought a pair...
Hey Richard, a friend of mine managed to get a pair for about £130 via an outdoor/running sales FB group, why not try looking on there or eBay? Hers was from someone who won a pair but didn't want them. Hope that helps! Claire
Thanks that's a really good tip.
thanks for this, i am doing my research just now, trying to justify £160!
Lol you will not regret it Shirley I promise you. Defo take a look here amzn.to/3JlfZps or see if there are any second hand on eBay too, you might get lucky!
My 2 cts. Magnetic: Shokz USB-C: Philips TAA6606--> BAS boost
And for (my) kids the TAK4607
Nice! Catchy names!
Normally run without listening to anything, but if I do I'll have to give give the shokz a consideration. My headphones don't take kindly to bouncing around!
I used to as well, but with these I found I could have the best of both worlds!
Hi! It's really a great review. However, I was wondering if it is possible for you to add a review for another cheap bone-phone. Remax rb s8 bone conduction headphones. This became very popular in my country, but there's no review and comparison with haylou purfree which is also available but a bit rare here.
Great suggestion!
I know some people have used bandage to minimize wind noise.
How about using round band aids ? The cloth material will catch some wind noise.
That is a great idea, thanks very much for that one!
Claire, my Shokz Run skips incrementally within a podcast. I am using it with spotify so your issue may be app dependent. Cay you please supply a link to one that you listen to (with adverts...).. Note that I sourced a very compelling unbranded headset that I will challenge on your behalf :)
Hi there, I've since accidentally pressed the skip track function on mu Shokz OpenRuns and they did skip forwards 30 seconds (or so I assume), it doesn't mention this in the instructions though so I just thought they couldn't do this. Sometimes it does skip the entire pod tho, I'm not sure why, possibly I'm pressing a different button combo without realising!
Does any of them have a vibration function that alerts one when a call is coming in?
Not that I heard while using these, my watch is linked so that vibrates.
I use the open run pro on my motorcycle with my half shell helmet so I can listen to music and use earplugs to protect my ears from my super loud exhaust and driving 110mph can still hear the music pretty good with high winds and an illegal loud exhaust without damaging my ears cause I can still wear earplugs
Fab! This is great news :)
unrelated question - what camelback do you wear other there?
Hi Max my fave Camelbak pack is the Ultra Pro vest here, amzn.to/3qEVkFU hope that helps!
I had a pair of aftershokz headphones but found that my ears got sore where they wrap over the top of the ears
Oh no! They might have changed now, they are called Shokz now so new models
The Openrun Pro's are much more comfortable, in my opinion. But, I feel that the Aeropex has a better sound quality.
Do you use the mini or normal version?
Hey Sam, not sure what item you mean here, the only thing I can think of that comes in a mini version is my iPhone! The headphones are all one size I think?
@@wildgingerruns the previous model of the Shokz (not pro) ; came in a smaller version as well (for small head shape).
All headsets should be engineered to use USB-C for charging.
I think, a standardized magnetic charger would be even better
They use the magnetic ones so they're waterproof though
yes that would be a good idea to have a standard magnetic charger
thanks was a great help. runpro it is then.
Yes I used them all the time, brilliant!
