I sell hitachi grinders at my hardware store, at least the brushless ones sound like that straight out of the box. Might be that the gear doesn't engage until you spin it up.

Hi Thomas, I know I've mentioned it before, but why won't you listen to an old guy (76 now) please for the sake of your health, get some masks to work in the loft, if you don't you will suffer in a few years time. Please take notice before it is too late.

additional benefit of a switch on the usb ports - isolates the transformer from running 24/7.
yep. waste of energy and lifetime of components. just as having your monitors/work pc on "standby" 24/7 until the caps explode.

Mate you’ve got to get onto ITS to hook you up with a chaser & hoover setup for your rewires. It’s super neat with minimal dust. Can even adjust the width of the blades to suit your beloved capping 😉
And quicker if you've got a lot to do!

TEXAS was a very old UK home hardware store, use to be one in Haringey Arena. Chaps 35mm back-boxes as standard, don't go smaller!

Hi Thomas, were any of those 'people' electricians, I think I know the answer! if they are I'm glad they're not doing work for me (not that they would be I'm a sparky, retired, but maybe they might when I get too 'doddery' aaaaaah!) Yeah Nah. I’ve worked around the globe and fully licenced in Aus. Your standards are not something I would shout about... Soldiering Earths together and using Plastic mechanical protection constitutes poor electrical standards

As a random aside, it's interesting to see the differences between norms and requirements in different countries. Here in Norway, to my knowledge, you are required to run cabling inside walls or between floors in tubing, no exceptions.
I always use round conduit, don't need grommets and can pull wires up or down if required

The best part of Milwaukee tools is there are just 2 batteries to stock M12 and M15 (and they also have a charger here in the USA that can charge either, thus keeping the kits smaller)
I expect it's not just easier to rewire this job but ultimately much safer too.
The MK USB power sockets you showed have a switching power supply inside, not an old school transformer.
I think because the angle grinder utilises a worm gear to allow the plane of rotation of the disc to be 90° in conjunction with the motor it will likely use a clutch mechanism to allow the cutting disc to turn independently which may be designed to click when manually rotated.
Creative way of using earth sleeve

I had MK USB sockets and apparently they are only on when a lead is plugged in. They were fine at charging, but when I tried to use my iPad/ iPhone when charging, the screen became unresponsive. MK said it wasn’t their problem as it complied with USB standards. An earthing issue I think. I’d love to hear if these new ones allow phones to work properly while charging. Cheers, and keep up the high standards!
i am happy that i am not an electrician in the UK, standards here in Holland are mutch higher. you will never see cabling smeared into the wal here.Ik can also see that when there are contractors from the UK come and do jobs here, they have really no clue what they are up against metal terminationboxes that can cut into the wires.
Also as a plasterer thank god for an electrician that sets the boxes properly.

Get away, it's a bomb!
I'll stick with my butane portasol soldering iron, it does the heat shrink on the end of the LED strip afterwards with the little hot air vent on the tip.
Always check the voltage coming out of the USB. I had full mains on a faulty unit directly into the usb cable... (not MK)
Hi Tom, nothing wrong with your grinder. Mine has sounded like that from new. It's something to do with the magnets.
A portable soldering iron is a nice tool to have, can really save the day at times.
Though, 20-30 seconds for it to heat up is a bit of a drag....
Though, I also fully understand that one might not drag along a 100+ watt soldering station with temperature regulation and the like...
But there are semi easy ways of getting a Hakko T12 solution to run off a standard 12-18 volt tool battery or just a lithium battery pack, would heat up in less then 5 seconds, and has plenty of power to boot and tight temperature regulation so that one doesn't accidentally melt/break stuff. (Not to mention the large selection of T12 tips as well.)
you should take a look at the TS-80 soldering iron, it's pretty damn awesome too and debatably more portable
I've fitted thousands of the MK Logic Plus USB sockets. I must admit I'm not overly fussed on MK products. I personally think Hager gear is of a much higher quality.
Testing isn't an issue with the USB sockets. Your only limitation is IR testing at 250v between Line & Earth and Neutral & Earth only. No different to having a fancy LED light fitted during testing.
That soldering iron looks huge. I’ve been using a iroda gas soldering iron (£15) for years, small and lightweight uses lighter gas (89p for large bottle from home bargains and lasts months), fits in tool bag (no bigger than a screwdriver). Come on £175 for that huge thing! Just to be used occasionally. Oh and as much as I love the vids, you were a bit ott in trying to sell us that thing 😁

Couple of questions Thomas. Can insulation be put straight over the cables afterwards. I want to cut, route the wires in the attic through the joists, join and board over the joists. Wondering if there was a reg about insulation covering the wires. Also which would the best connector to use for this application. I was going to use in-line choc blocks or wagos.

Hi there Tom, is your customer planning to insulate his loft space before 'boarding' it? If so, have you carried out the relevant calculations for the impact of thermal insulation and 'grouping' on the current carrying capacity of the cable? ... or are you relying on the low current demand of LED lamps? Have they consulted a structural engineer? Those look like 4 " joists and will not have been designed to carry any weight in the loft space!

That soldering iron looks really clumsy for "small delicate" work like LED strips. Are you aware of the TS100 and TS80 ?
Another interesting video, guys. Having the camera person is great, but you need to get a motorised gimbal, because the wobbly footage will get old pretty quickly.
I'm new to the trade, so this is a genuine question, not heckling. What's wrong with using Wago connectors? They seem much better than choc block connectors.
Why do you not use 20mm conduit for wires plastered over? Coming from northern Ireland.
Would be the way to go in most Western European countries. I don't think I've ever seen capping or oval conduit anywhere except in the UK. Of course then you've got the Germans, who'll happily tell you that pipe is so 1930s and you should just use cable straight in the plaster. I've even had Germans tell me that using pipe in walls is forbidden!

If you had a screwfix and a toolstation right next to each other, they both stocked the product at the same price, which would you go in?
I tend to gravitate to Toolstation as you get seen and sorted by 1 person. I don’t like the “queue twice” screwfix method.
Those back boxes had the Texas label, I used to work there.
Screwfix every time. Maybe this is just my local stores, but toolstation seems much less friendly and it smells funny in there. Screwfix on the other hand - well they know me by name at this point, have a chat when I pop in, if I've ordered something for pickup they'll grab it for me soon as I walk in the door, anything wrong with a product they'll sort it no trouble, love it.
About the USB sockets, Most are no good for modern devices anyway these days and a couple of years ago when they started getting popular, it was worked out that having them powered 24/7/365 costs you £12 a year per socket. That can really build up in a house that has them everywhere. It is the same as leaving your phone charger plugged in all the time. as phones need more power and faster chargers these sockets seem to just be less and less useful especially if you factor in all the costs.
Tom, with the amount of bad wiring work in that place I'm surprised you didn't just flat out condemn the bad work. Your redoing it to spec and I'm sure you'll get a certificate on it and be proud to put your name on it. Better safe than sorry.
MK offers a separate USB module with shuttered ports (K5837). These seem to be switched by the shutter movement.

I don't know how you nail your plastic capping on. It just cracks completely when I nail into it. I prefer the metal capping.

not so much when rewiring, but things like led strip lighting, soldering connections etc..
Great way of joining cable, when you have no room for wagos etc. Done right the join is barely thicker than the original cable and strong.
ENLITE make the E6 downlight with a plug in connection for first fix and insulation resistance testing with loop in loop out push fit connections made for 1.5mm2 cable.

I’m not a sparky, but I just don’t love USB integrated sockets. Active electronics running 24/7 just doesn’t sound like a great plan. Having an external isolator switch would be a great solution. An annoyingly bright LED active when the charging circuit is live would encourage folk to turn it off when not in use.
Because conduit looks neater than capping tbh And end to end protection. especially the cheep capping that you could sneeze and the shit will snap

What exactly is the purpose of plastic capping? It doesn't provide any protection from screws or nails. Is it supposed to provide a cavity that allows the cable to be pulled out and replaced in the future?
What's that sliding lock you got on the back doors of your van. Could do with one of them.
What's with putting conduit in up the walls when it's going to be plastered over? Why not just clip it up the wall? Never seen conduit there the short time I was a spark
i may be wrong but i was under the assumption that loft joists aren't meant to be drilled through?
Why doesn't you use pvc pipe in the attic so its easy to rewire? In sweden we have used pipe for 40 years so f.e in my house i can add/replace the wires if i so wish.

I reckon every plasterer in London must have a strong dislike for you and your persistent use of the ubiquitous plastic trunking giving them 3mm at best depth of plaster to cover it. In reality it does virtually nothing to protect the cables but results in the poor plasterer having no coverage depth and a flexible plastic tube that persistently flexes as he tries to finish of the top surface - and we all know that over time there will be tell-tale cracks appearing to highlight your handywork. If you want to use trunking then at least set it at a depth that gives the plaster a fighting chance
I was wondering about that too, there is almost no space and plastic isnt exactly the best in terms of "grip" for the stuff to hold onto.

that's what plasterboard's for mate?
I'd honestly prefer pipe for that as the cable isn't anywhere near as likely to catch on the walls of a pipe as it is on the rough brickwork.
Then on the other hand I might be prejudiced, having learned the trade in Austria where virtually any wiring is in round 20 mm (or larger depending on the wires) Copex. Even in commercial setups with trays above a grid ceiling all the vertical runs in the walls are in pipe. Only cowboys like the ones who wired this place before Tom came in will put cable straight into the wall (except in crazy situations like walls that are only 50 mm thick or vaulted brick ceilings with very little plaster that are in imminent danger of collapsing if you start chiselling at the bricks from below).
@7:45 - the one thing holding me back from installing USB sockets at home is the fact that they're always on and you can't unplug them. I wouldn't just want an off-for-testing switch in the back, I'd want either an on-off switch on the front (a third rocker between the 13A ones) or a microswitch activated by insertion of a USB plug, so when nothing's plugged in it's really, REALLY off and not just pretending to be off.
As for the rest of the wiring job here, if I was the customer I'd be passing links to your videos on to anybody else I knew who was shopping around for electrical work, naming and shaming the guy who did it first and ensuring he gets as little business as possible. Word of mouth works both ways; if you're one of the good guys you'll be rushed off your feet with work even without advertising, whereas the cowboys' adverts will be out there to trap the unwary.
That iron might be OK for bigger stuff, but if you (also) need to do any electronics or solder wires inside cabinets, etc., it's way too bulky. TS80 iron + USB-C Power bank or TS100 iron + Lithium pack is far more comfortable / versatile.

there's no point in switching off the 5V usb generator...
over here in france, we use corrugated tube that snakes inside the wall, all the way to the customer unit, makes replacing or adding wires a breeze
The old MK usb sockets I fitted has micro switches on the shutters. Wish the ones in the rest of the house did as you can hear the high pitch noise from the power supply in them 😢
