Let's be real! Rob is calling out some of these shops while he himself hasn't built anything rotary related that's been reliable and lasted thousands and thousands of miles so how can he really talk about what they're doing? Seems his RUclips fame is getting to his head because he's been showing a lot of arrogance recently.
Good. In every business that's boutique in nature, by force of numbers, rather than anything else, there's always the predators that suck in and make it worse as a thing in general. Not all of them are, but i'm leery every time i hear about "self proclaimed" experts that take months to make "perfection".

The way you used those micrometers probably caused a heart attack for some machinist watching
i was cringing the whole lenght of him measuring.
I came looking for this comment, I don't pretend to know everything but I know for sure all those measurements would be inaccurate and the micrometer went further out of calibration every time it was used.

Quick tip when using a micrometer, Rob. Use the little knob at the very end that slips when measuring, that is meant to give as soon as it contacts the part and give the most precise measurements, as well as prevents you from damaging the tool.
Funny Rob is calling out other Rotary shops and he doesn't know how to use a micrometer.

That's for amateurs, once you get the feel for it youll get better results.
Keep practicing.
Same with bumping spark plugs to gap them, only trained professionals can get away with it.
Same with clicker torque wrenches , once you get good at using one switch over to a beam style.

I really love the in depth build/technicle teaching videos instead of guys just buying fast cars skipping to them being built and doing burnouts this is why i watch car videos!

Thats the most important takeaway. An educated customer will also make a good shops life easier. There are shitty customers out there too but this video focuses on whats realistically possible with as little as possible and how reliable it is. So customers can make educated decisions

16:10 You posted this video at the best time possible, in the next day or 2 I will be packing my rotors as well. Thank you Rob for explaining this ! I've understood that the oil rings and springs are oriented in a very specific way but I've always wondered why it was done in such a specific way. And I was also so curious about the actual physics behind the design. Of all the videos I've seen explaining how to build/pack a rotor, this was the most clear, and straightforward ESPECIALLY since you went into the reasoning behind it. I cannot thank you enough for making this video !
The little nub on the end of the handle is what you're supposed to use when tightening the micrometer!!!

Youre right, but I never liked it. I can get more consistency by feel, check against a gauge block. The little ratchet mech on the end isn't very good imo
@@mandrakejake Depends if you always used it the right way it should be accurate. But as soon as you start tighten it with the big knob you ruining the calibration 😅
I don’t like the ratchet style. I perfer friction style .
It's called the thimble. Easy to not know how to use a micrometer. But I'm sure in a video or two we will see him using one correctly.
Please the friction clutch on the micrometer has a reason XD coming from abom79 that quite the drastical difference

This is so damn inspiring. My FD has sat in the garage for years. The engine in it's last known state was good, but it already had 120k original miles. One day, I'll fire it back up again and hope the motor remains in one piece.

OEM vs Aftermarket Apex seals. A rotary builder told me that they recommend OEM for most applications since they are softer and you tend to loose power gradually; also they are less catastrophic. Aftermarket ones are harder and prone to giving away suddenly, causing more damage. They recommended them on motors that will be rebuilt frequently enough that that's not an issue. What is your experience / opinion? Thanks for the great content, BTW.
for a person like me that has a short fuse and zero patience for assembling anything with too many tiny part , I could never picture myself ever working on engines like those ,

My thing is the cost to performance ratio, it can't be argued that rotaries are more cost/performance efficient in the long run vs a junkyard LS

In his series, now going on 10+ years of rebuilding his Cosmo, AaronCake had one of his lady friends rebuild a rotary under his supervision, it's that easy.
Dude the quick oil change on fresh engines is a thing not everyone does but it's so worth it. For the first little bit after rebuilding the engine in my last project car I did a couple oil changes stupid frequently.
Getting ready to build a 12a in a first gen. I have been looking forward to this series. Nice to hear stuff over again to keep my mind fresh. 👍👍

As someone who has a pretty good understanding of taking apart and putting together V and Inline motors, god damn rotory motors are complicated

Stock 3mm apex seals are fine. We had our Sports sedan making 750 for 2 years without touching the motor. We ran a plate on the bottom of the motor. Removed all twisting. Rules didn't allow us to do any block mods.
the heat treating is the easiest for me to understand instantly. my dad uses to make knives, and I'm starting to get into that myself. if you look at just about any forged knife they use two different metals. one as a hard edge that will cut through time and space itself, and the rest of the knife body. the softer metal allows for the knife to be more flexible, while the harder material used for the cutting edge allows for a much sharper knife. makes total sense for the apex seals.
actually most knives are 1 metal but only the edge is heat treated.
You explained everything Brilliantly .You really are a very Good Engineer .Bck in the day I had a Rx3 estate .A Beautiful smooth motor until I had to park on inclines to start it .So I took the rotary out and put in a 1600 ford crossflow easy conversion .I took the rotary apart it was fun I ended up with a pile of junk .The carburettor was massive. thanks again for a Good vid .
1 don't use vaseline on oil rings.
2 learn how to use a micrometer.
3 balance the rotating assembly when changing rotors and especially putting an auto counterweight on.
4 check the height of all the springs after heavy detonation, they can flatten.
5 the FC turbo housings don't have extra cooling around the leading plug, FD housings are better.
I'm sure there is more....

I love this kind of attitude in cars, computers, or anything I work on. Sharing actual info helps us make it all better and doesn’t hurt anyone’s bank unless they’re full of shit anyway. I’ve had issues like this for years with tuners. “You can’t possibly learn to tune by yourself”. Why not? They learned it, why can’t I?

love your work man! rotaries while on the outside look simple (no cams, no valves no pistons), this shows the complexity that is on the inside! (making sure the rotar seals are inspec, compared to just buying a set of rings to fit a specific piston for piston engines!)

Awesome, one thing, maybe you already do it, is that on the rotor berings you get blue magic a rag and polish them, then a little Valvoline so they centric shaft slides easier without scratching them. Edwin loquito quiller told me that!
Rob please use the torque screw on the micrometer. U will uncalibrate it and youre measuarments wont be consistent. Love youre builds!!

Try to only use the smallest knob on that micrometer (outside most) and handle the frame as little as possible as heating from your hands can make it larger. If you have a 1-2-3 block handy or some shims, calibrate the micrometer on one of those.

Quality control comes in all shapes and sizes
Vargas brothers just done 45psi, unsure if it was stock motor. Bent 1 of the through bolts,, twisted rotor housing, scraped rotor on block.
