- Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Scales & Tales with Pentatonic Pockets. I had a number of messages/comments surrounding the recent Billy Gibbons Soloing Secrets episode, which contains a brief mention/look at using what I can pentatonic scale "pockets" on the fretboard, which are really just small five-note clusters that connect along the neck using the pentatonic scale positions as a guide.
This lesson moves what we tackled in the Billy Gibbons lesson and shifts this information even further, by switching to another key (E Minor), targeting specific notes within the scale, weaving between scale pockets/positions, modifying the pentatonic into the Blues scale, targeting additional notes found outside the pentatonic scale, and much more!

Bro I think you were born to teach… I mean it could have been physics or cooking or tennis whatever…the point is your relaxed style and disposition gets your message through so clearly…it’s a gift you have…but I’m glad you teach guitar cause that’s my hobby …but I am retired and want to learn some basic fishing techniques…if you offer that I will watch too…thanks for awesome lessons professor of rock!
Learning the 5 boxes and how to play through them was my justification for buying my first "real" guitar a few years ago. But then I moved directly into learning the full major and minor scales without really doing anything with what I had already learned. This lesson and the Billy Gibbons lesson have been my kick in the butt to quit moving to other things before you can be musical with what you have already learned. Thanks once again, David.

I've played guitar all my life and I never stop learning. I love you're style of teaching. When it gets down to it flash and shredding is great but the guy that can make your spine tingle bending a note or hitting that perfect triad with a slide into next run gets my attention. I've been places and just hearing someone making that guitar talk immedietly gets my attention.
Totally agree - been playing for years, gig in a band, people think I’m good but I still get those moments where something leaps out that’s been in plain sight for years and I’ve never really noticed it. I still learn new ideas almost weekly. Hope it carries on!

There could definitely be a part two where the b2 from the Phrygian the raised 6th for the Dorian feel or choosing to flat the 6th for the Aeolian/minor feel could be incorporated within the pockets much like you did the flat 5th (blue note). I think that same diagram showing these modal bonus notes with the pentatonic would blow a lot of minds.
I have been using the “pockets” for a while now never knew what to call them besides by shape…great to have a name now to refer to them by!

My favorite players use the 3 note per string pentatonic licks. They give ya the coolest fusion sound! Great Lesson as always 🍺‘ski!🤘
Great lesson, you can really see versatility of five notes.
I remember learning a similar thing but I took the Johnson/Bonamassa route. Expanded on the whole concept though. Guthrie Govan and Marty Friedman are the guys I learned it from, where you take your pocket and within the pocket just glide over a diatonic note. I got that from Guthrie Govan. Marty Friedman i noticed did that more in a lick format. Basically I call it playing "within." I'll take a lick and grab a note from a diatonic scale that's between pentatonic notes. The goal though is to still get the feel of the lick even though I'm gliding over this "outside" notes. If you simplify a lot of Marty's licks and focus on where the pentatonic shapes are, he does this all over place.
Enjoyed this tremendously and you read my mind. I was thinking after the Gibbons video how I'd really dig exploring those "pockets" a bit more. Cheers!
Great lesson! Great Tone on that Strat! Especially in Em, would be great in corporate some open strings into these licks? Using the middle of the neck shapes with available open strings opens up a whole world of licks…different lesson.

Another great video - nicely reinforces the power of these small patterns but you emphasise the importance of knowing where the root is. That really is key and something that annoys me about the idea of there being 5 pentatonic patterns. There’s only one pentatonic scale in the key, it’s the same notes around the root.

Loved the way you targeted the outside notes, really sounded good, but you really need to know what's going on to do this. I'm just not there yet. Not sure I ever will be.
David, only you could get me to watch a 20- something min video on pentatonics and scales- great teacher!! Can you PLEASE do a video on the scales John Notto of Dirty Honey uses? He plays some fantastic solos live and when he drifts out of the pentatonic- he’s unbelievably technical. A 3 licks lesson, a breakdown of chords/ scales, would be brilliant. Well you forget to mention that the 3rd chord tone of the IV chord is not in the pentatonic scale as well as which mixolydian mode do you play over the V chord since the 3rd chord tone of the V chord is a raised 3rd which is "not in key" in minor blues. You don't want your students playing wrong notes on stage do you. You should make a video lesson going over these basics to know what to do over the IV chord and V chord because you can't play the pentatonic scale in the key because of the 3rds of the IV chord and the 3rd of the V chord are not in the minor pentatonic scale. A lot of people overlook this which is a big problem
I get notes and stuffs... But Where is the number 2 ball, Dave? I don't understand! Are the numbers on the balls the sequence? ... I'm not stupid but this making me embarrassingly stupid. ...So frustrating. Just don't get it, bro. The "jam" sounded great BTW.
