I really think your definition of introverts is more conservative. The characteristics you mentioned seem more like an autistic person. Introverts just feel their energy drained because of social interaction. So it's not like they can't touch an acquaintance or get overstimulated because of rain
Not me learning a different point of view of Naoki several years later. I didn't know this much about introverts. I like this.
A lot of people hate Naoki for being emotionless but it’s not his fault and Kotoko may be quite pushy but she added colour to his monotone life it’s so beautiful she taught him how to live and not just live as a mindless robot.
To be fair, it depends on the version people watch or if they’ve read the manga. In the original and in most versions, you see the change in Naoki’s character but people need to truly understand his background as to why he became somewhat “emotionless”.
On Kotoko’s end, she may have been pushy but if you think about it, it may be because Naoki confused her with the graduation kiss. I mean if you were deciding to move on and the guy you liked for a good few years kissed you out of the blue and even dared you if you can, you may push a little bit just to understand what that was all about.
Again it depends on the versions people watch. Personally, I like watching the chinese version where the emotions were very raw and easy to understand.
Thank you so much for breaking this down! I re-watched this and that's what I thought, too. Thos part of the story was when after Kotoko moved out of their house--and he misses her! Thinker types, especially introverted ones, show their care & affection by telling you things like it is--they would rather be frank and honest just so you can work things out. Feeler types would try to protect other people's feelings and would phrase things carefully or hold their tongue. All these things flew over my head when I was younger. I'm so glad I can re-watch these. :)
As an introvert, I do agree that socialising with people can be really draining. I work in customer service and I am always drained especially by the end of the week and everyday after work is a reset. Thas is why it is important for me that I am comfortable with the people I work with which is mostly the case at my work.
Kotoko loved spending any time she could get with Naoki. This was one of my favorite scenes because he was slowly coming around to his feeling for Kotoko. As the series continued, they bought out the best in each other, which I loved about Kotoko and Naoki.
Thank you for this breakdown, this is my favourite anime show and story plot as well because everything is so entertaining and funny, it's like a feel good show to watch after a long tiring day. At first, I read so many comments saying Naoki is toxic but I don't necessarily think it's bad they made him that flawed plus it's kind of good they write him more realistic and relatable, there are people who do function like Naoki in the real world, they are all studies to get No.1, a genius in life and never had to struggle, obviously that is going to make someone a little less sociable and less on emotions because those aren't his strengths and he never got a chance to interact with that part of him but when Kotoko came into the picture someone who messes things up in his life for once brought some joy, fun and difference to it. Of course, he isn't going to be happy and lashes out angrily at first but tbh, guys if a person you don't like at first keeps confessing their love to you and follows you around you would be annoyed too, Kotoko's stalking is really creepy if you think about it xD But I like how the show made Naoki grow as time goes on, that's his character growth where he learnt that he was in love with her but didn't want to admit it because of pride and the fact he never fell in love before so he doesn't know how to handle these new feelings. I appreciate that the writers for the plot made all the characters relatable in some way, they all have struggles, goals and work hard in life. It's such a feel good show, I think that's my favourite thing about it, its that you see the characters struggle but they didn't give up and continued on in life, it gives me energy to go on too, anyways some love for Naoki he's not all bad, didn't we all start out as toxic brats as kids? But we learn to grow from it as life goes on

This episode was a benchmark. He hated that they teased Kotoko. He wanted to show thrm that Kotoko is no less.🎉

When i was watching this series i was so irritated that majority of the viewers don't understand his character that he is not rude or anything he is just an introvert and sometimes their bluntness comes across as rudeness. As an introvert myself im shy and straightforward so for some i come across as rude too. But tbh its just our habit and we don't want to get attached to people who dont want it. Thanks for just putting it our for many to understand his character ❤❤❤

As an introvert, I can totally understand the point.. and especially an INFJ, i am absolutely 100% introvert but INFJ has that switch to which we can control when to be extrovert without forcing ourselves, that is we can automatically blend in with the crowd and kind of vibing along with them, whatever the situation or atmosphere is. This switch, because we can control it, there is no time limit as in we had enough interaction already, we desperately need me-time. No, we know very well to not switch off our extrovert mode until whatever business we have with other people is completely settled like for example, working with other people at school or work place. It's like we have so many different personas and we usually match the person we became with the person we are with. It's hard to explain but if you're an infj, you will definitely understand. So, going with the point with Naoki, as an introvert, yes, we prefer being on our own, and the only time we want to spend time with others is when that person is special enough. but for an infj, there's another higher level for that. Our true self is introvert, but we can switch to extrovert and socialize with literally anyone without time limit, without feeling easily drain-out until the matter is settle, and then there's that level where we became both with someone who is special enough or close enough, like family.

Being an introvert i think i understood naoki kinda well 😭 not showing affection, not being able to explain things or clear misunderstandings even tho you want to is so relatable and him kinda having an eye on kotoko while acting cold is also relatable 😭 the director definitely understood the assignment

The whole point of joining the tennis club was to stay close to Kotoko. He knew she would follow him, he even told her to by saying “don’t follow me.”
Not only did I come to understand Naoki more from these analyses, I also learned how I myself is an introvert tooo.

As a well trained, ehm, I mean socialised introvert: I agree that a lot of things depend on the person. Like I love to hug my family but other people I am VERY careful about touch. Also the energy draining thing: absolutely true that i have a social battery that runs out rather quickly but there are some situation/people where thats not the case. And most are platonic. Again, my family, like 2/3 close friends.

I have a close guy friend from HS and damn he be more introvert than me, so am I. But we got close and now we freely show each other out thoughts and emotion which actually help him express himself more. And yes, some might say it's romantic (esp our circle of friends) but we just find each other's presence comforting.

I'm an introvert and I agree with the not liking to be touched or touch other people.
However, my grandma (on my mom's side) is an exception. I don't like when she touches me, but I like to pet her all the time, which she complains about.
