I follow this couple just to see the gorgeous cottages. Im a Brit so really appreciate what we have here. Especially the beautiful homes in the countryside.

It's not aa shed, it's an annexe. In the UK 'shed' usually describes a wooden structure used for storing garden tools. The outside room here is a solid stone, habitable building.
Btw - you look good with your neat haircut and clean shaven. It makes you look younger, but not too young.

I live in one of a row of cottages on the Yorkshire border. Built in about 1740, it has three foot thick solid stone walls, beamed ceilings and a large garden complete with stream and waterfall into a wildlife pond. The countryside is literally at my back door and it's stunning. Pendle Hill, famous for the Pendle Witch trials is four miles away and is so big, you can see it from evetywhere. We sometimes forget what a beautiful country we live in.
I live in a remote country cottage. It's got roses up the wall and my next neighbour is half a mile away. Built in 1860 from 'rubble' stones and mortar, it has no damp course, no central heating, no double glazing and it's not the easiest place to live in, especially in the Winter. 'Be careful what you wish for - because you might get it!' 😉
We bought a fixer upper. Ten years later.... Sigh. However, the house is paid off this year and then we can afford to do real work! I'm a brit living in the us so I know our house is nowhere as old as yours! Our winters are very cold in the house (learned the power of layers!) but we bought it for a reason, a vision. And I'm sure your vision was similar to ours. I just tell myself, the house has good bones, the house has good bones.
I grew up in a house like that, except we were in a village so had close neighbours. It was a 2-up 2-down cottage, very small and cosy. I'd be very happy to live in a house like that again. Sure it's not as convenient as a modern house, but I still love it so much, even the chilly draughts! Blankets, hot water bottles, draught excluders and a cracking fire make it all good :)
Our house had a kitchen with a stone floor, smooth river stones. When we moved in there was only soil between them and mice used to burrow up into the house, so my dad had to fill the gaps with a type of cement to stop them!

this delightful, charming couple have been living and working here in England for several years, but at weekends and holidays, they love to travel around the UK, in all Seasons, delving into all sorts of nooks and crannies. If I am ever fraught or grumpy, or am just having 'one of those days' - when nothing is going right, I sometimes stop what I'm doing, make a cup of tea, sit down and watch these two - it works every time - a second chance to make it a good day again.

As soon as you said “This kinda feels like a horror movie. She seems too nice” I couldn’t help hearing The League Of Gentlemen from Royston Vasey vibes, which made for a really funny watch. (It’s a dark British comedy series, which is very surreal)
Lovely cottage though.
What you need is a friend who's staying in a cottage like this so you can spend one night there for the experience.

This German couple are absolutely fantastic. Their videos always reveal wonderful quintessentially English cottages, stately homes & landscapes. They live in the UK & are fascinated by all things British, especially if there is a connection to Jane Austen & her novels! You should watch them more often. By the way you’re looking even more charming with your clean cut look! 😊😮😊

The best time to visit the Cotswolds is in the Autumn .. the colours are amazing it's really beautiful. Best time to visit the U.K. is in June usually .. I say that because it is currently June and we are having sunshine interspersed with showers. It's really green and lush though.
My homeland, Cornwall, has thousands of these quaint little cottages. 💞
I lived in a cottage (built in 1705) in a tiny village for 15 years ( it was actually 2 cottages knocked together to form one) - it was idyllic in summer - in winter it was a struggle to keep the house warm - thick stone walls and floors keep it nice and cool in summer, but are a nightmare to warm up in winter. We had oil fired central heating and open fires in the lounge and dinning room, but it was always cold of you weren't sat over the fire. And they are always draughty.
The only way to really heat them up is to install underfloor heating - but that costs a fortune, and needs planning permission if your cottage is listed.
Even putting in new energy efficient windows costs a bomb because you can't just replace with upvc double glazed units ( you have to have specially built wooden frames).
And you can't insulate solid stone walls, or the roof if your bedrooms are in the eaves with exposed beams, as ours was.
I really miss my old house sometimes - but not in winter!
My retirement dream (Canada to Stow-on-the-Wold) was dashed by warnings of planning permission to hang a bird feeder, brush my teeth, etc.
@@danmayberry1185, if you buy a house that isn't 'listed', you can pretty much do what you want inside, and outside in your garden if it's not encroaching on your neighbour's light.
But, with a listed building, as ours was, you can't do anything structural to it without planning permission.
'structural' means things like walls ( no knocking down walls to make it open plan, or moving them) changing windows, roofs, etc..
And any outside renovations have to be done using traditional methods in keeping with the age of the property. So, no rendering over stone walls or painting walls with waterproof paint that may be allowing damp into the house - you have to have the joints between the stone blicks/bricks pointed using traditional mortar.
In one way, it's good that our historic buildings are being maintained, but it's a pain in the arse for owners.
There are plenty of non - listed older buildings though.
@@gillianrimmer7733 even then though you can’t. I am in a conservation area been able to replace the back of the house with upvc but the front you have to replace windows with wooden double glazed cannot put upvc.

Hi Joel, that cottage is not far from us and is in Fulbrook, West Oxfordshire. We live in the bordering Gloucestershire and have a farm so quite used to low ceilings and stone floors but I guess as we are used to it! pop in if you're next in the Cotswolds.
Remember the heatwave when you were here, too hot !
I'm 6'2" so low ceilings in old houses are a problem for me too. People were generally shorter even 100 years ago as nutrition was not what it is now. These cottages are very pretty (and expensive) and make lovely holiday lets, but I prefer more modern accomodation for daily living.
Beautiful classic small cottage.❤ We have outdoor sheds because most homes have no basement. Very old homes may have a small cellar but many of those were just used for storing fuel coal & wood. Sheds are usually extra outside storage for gardening gear, kids outdoor toys, bikes & as a workshop/arts/craft/kids space ❤
I regularly watch this couple. They encourage me to get out and see more of Britain. The ceilings are low in cottages, that may be well over a hundred years old. Because people were much shorter then being on poor diets.

A relatively new cottage. My grandparent's cottage was a wool merchant's house/place of business divided into 3 cottages (1x 3 bed & 2x2 bed) with the coach house/stables making a fourth. They dated to the 1300s and were incredibly warm - the original parts at least, the modern kitchen/bathroom additions not so much - considering they were the original wattle and daub.
Beautifully rebuilt. Remember, there was no electricity or plumbing in 1700's. No bathroom either.
I can see in your eyes - you so crave a cosy, slow and engaged life... I hope you make it work.

My wife and i spent a couple of holidays in the cotswolds. The village was called Ford and the cottage was call Yoke cottage.
It was very small with a lounge/dinner with a small bedroom and shower/bathroom.
There was a small back garden which conveniently overlooked the local pub which was a two minute stroll to. perfect for driving to bourbon-on -the-water and other beautiful places in the cotswolds.
Jp theses are one of my favourite you tubers they stay in some amazing places across the English countryside.

Old stone cottages look cute and twee but they're actually pretty cramped, cold and dark. Nice to stay in on holiday but I wouldn't want to live in one, personally.
The honey coloured stone that all the old houses in the Cotswolds are built from is Cotswold Stone, a type of limestone quarried locally in the Cotswolds. A shed is a "Man Cave".
The artist’s studio is how I like to decorate. A bit bold but still neat and tidy. I like to push things a little colour wise.
Modern buildings can be built in the cotswolds but they must have a facing of Cotswold stone to blend in

So jps what your saying is because in America every room has to have a purpose you think that rule should be incorporated into British homes, that’s not going to happen depending on your house we sometimes like a room for just being a room with no purpose, don’t try to over think it or Annalise just accept it for what it is
The Cutty Sark still exists so there's not too much wood from it in buildings.

The one thing you won't find in a Cotswolds village is Cotswolds families. They can't afford to live there. The locals were long ago driven out by rising prices thanks to Londoners wanting holiday homes.
we lived in a 16th century cottage in Hertfordshire, now we live in a village outside south Cambridge city, we have these cottages thatched in our village, so pretty. ❤️🇬🇧xxx
I live in an old cottage, don't know how old, it's in Faden's maps (1795). Flint and brick . Not cosmetically dressed. My stairs wrap round the chimney, so narrow and steep. Have a massive inglenook fireplace with wood burner. Plenty of old places around abouts. Has low doorway that catches tall people out. Quite happy with it, large garden and a well. Near the north sea, over engineered so is quite solid. Sheep, our economy was built on them, such important animals.
it’s probably not economically viable too build these traditional homes anymore in Britain but i do feel like the modernisation of homes and buildings in Britain in general is soulless.
Would quite happily live in there, bigger than it looks from outside - I have little Greene paint in my lounge, its from Wales, top notch brand

When these centuries old cottages were constructed people were smaller/shorter, hence the small doors, very low ceilings, very often with rather steep stairs to upper floors! Even as a 5ft 4inch Brit I don't like low ceilings and steep stairs! Because these buildings are extra legally protected historical houses changes are very highly reduced/state managed to avoid changing the houses' characters!
Quite similar to the environment I grew up in. Wasn't until I moved out that I really appreciated it & how lucky I'd been tbh.
They are very pretty but not very comfortable to live in. Cold, drafty, very small, uneven floors , very narrow and steep stairs. Plus they usually have very small windows which makes them dark.
I’ve stayed in a few while on holiday and its a novelty for a few days but am always glad to get back to a modern house.
My daughter lives in a cottage. Very dark, one coal fire no other heating. The stairs are a nightmare, stone with no hand rails.

I lived in a cottage when I was young. Paraffin lamps and candles. No running water. Two tiny bedrooms. Ice on the windows inside in winter. Lavatory at the bottom of the garden. This had to be emptied, great! My father was away in Africa for five years during WW2 and so my poor mother had to cope. However we were happy most of the time.

My home was built in the late 16th century, made from solid blocks of sandstone 18 inch's thick. The doors are only about 5 foot 8 high and if you are 6 foot tall or over you need to walk between the beams when walking around downstairs. 🤣🤣 When we moved in we had 1 cold tap in the yard. The toilet was outside in a stable block. No gas or electric. The only heating - cooking was from a coal - wood burning range. Its a bit better now, but still old fashioned. 👍👍

Iv moved 36 times all over, my 2 fave houses were, a house in Scotland designed by the guy who did Balmoral castle the royal family place in Scotland. It was not all the house and it was the smallest house he did , small yeh righ. It hd 2 turrets and was huge and stunning. I loved the fire place in the hall.
The other was a 1700 cottage with a modern extended back. It was picture perfect clapper board 4 windows and a doar in the middle. It was a fantastic party house with the modern unsean back. It we on a cricket green in Surrey, England. 2 extreamly diffrent houses but both stunning.

When I was a child, two elderly sisters lived up the street in a thatched cottage (I'm in s. Wales) . It wasnt visible from the road. It seemed the cosiest place, like a fairytale... Though in reality it was probably hard going for them... I highly doubt it had electric or indoor plumbing. And those thatched rooves need upkeep.
They had a goat and a swing seat in the garden. And were very tolerant of us kids visiting. That was the early 70s. By the 80s they'd died, and the cottage was sadly pulled down.
I want to live there!

You have to remember Joel, while those cottages seem like a slow paced place to live, you're still only a 30minute drive away from Oxford, Cheltenham, Swindon, Gloucester, and an hour 30 into London or Cardiff. Living the country side life is very forgiving in most of England. What you really should be worried abuot is those small narrow country lanes, at night there is no street lighting and they're probably still 60mph roads.
Hundred years ago this was probably a tied cottage housing farm labourer/wife & numerous children that served the area, & community.

I lived in Gloucestershire for many years and visited Burford often. The house prices in
Burford are off the scale would not be at all surprised if this cottage went on the market for around a million!!!
I do miss old buildings like that since moving to Croatia. Croatia has medieval walled towns along the coast but I'm inland where there does not seem to be much interest in preserving historic buildings. Not sure I would want bacon with banana!

I had more of a horror/the brothers grimm vibe from the start😂Just Finished renovating my cornwall cottage. Alot of hard work to upkeep and alot of horror stories along the way. But got there in the end. I love how p*$$£d off you get with the weather even when you dont live here 😂. Great video Joel cool with beard or no beard 👍
