Freddie created this magic using a very traditional form. A rhapsody is a classical work in 3 parts. You might think of it as a tiny, tragic opera. Just genius.

BTW, Bohemian Rhapsody, releases in the early 70's, is about Freddie Mercury's "coming out". He was one of a kind that is terribly missed 30 years after his passing. There will never be another like him. The highest voice you heard is Roger Taylor, the drummer. I could go on for pages ND pages buy I'm going to stop here.

1975. The 70s is the best decade to listen to experimental new stuff that still feels fresh today.
One of the greatest UK bands ever. They were so unique. You will have heard a lots of their songs I’m sure. ‘ another one bites the dust’ for instance. Do yourself a favour and listen to their songs you will be blown away. Look up their Live Aid concert appearance, they stole the show.
Yeah the full Live Aid performance is a must as is Montreal.

Joel, this is like our second national anthem. I guess a large proportion of the UK population could sing along to this no problem. Even young people, like you, seem to get into it once they hear it.
A lot of American people discovered Queen very late because I think there was a censure on them for a long time in the USA.

I used to see Freddy Mercury in the Gay Bars in London in the 70s and 80s. He was one of our heroes. I am 73 now and still love his music, especially Bohemian Rhapsody. R.I.P Freddy.
This recording is now attributed to be the first-ever music video. Prior to this there were films of concerts. This vid was the first structure the presentation of a song that had it's own visually artistic qualities. It also broke all the rules of Pop songs in it's structure and length. 50 years on it continues to be brilliant no matter how many times you hear it.

@@marykatherinehawk3530 I was around 20 when I first heard this on TV. People talk of remembering where they were when they heard of the death of an important person. My first exposure to this piece was that sort of experience for me. I was crossing the living room and broke my stride mid-step because of both the sound and the unique video. I hadn't seen anything like it before. And I stood and watched to the end and knew that something important had happened in music.

Joel, this was 1975. It was number one in the British charts for literally 9 weeks.
It was also number one again in 1991 just after the lead singer Freddie Mercury died.
Now you've discovered them you're on the start of a very long journey!
I saw them live in 1982 and 1986.

I've seen some greats in my time, The Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden, Hawkwind, Rush, Pink Floyd.. But never got to see Queen. I will always regret that. 👍🇬🇧

70’s JP. I can’t believe you’ve never listened to Queen! They were the band of the 20th century! Yes I know Americans love the Beatles! I always loved the Beetles myself, I am from Chester which is only half an hour away from Liverpool, and I was in college in Liverpool, so I loved the Beatles right from the begining, long before they were famous. But! It was Queen and Freddie Mercury were the favourite, absolutely out of this world band, always. You’ve now got to watch the Queen, live Aid concert. That’s another out of this world performance. 👍

A lot of young people have never heard of them, I think us older parents have passed Queen on to our children and so on, my son and daughter in law are 28, he can't stand them, she loves them, we have to keep in mind Joel's age 😊

I remember when this was released in1976 and although it may look a little dated to young eyes it was ground breaking at the time. Music videos were also in their infancy, so we had never seen anything like this. Songs usually lasted a couple of minutes in those days, so this running as long as it did with the numerous changes in tempo and style of singing was outstanding. It stayed at number one for about 6 weeks. It really put Queen on the map.

The singer, did the harmony himself, in layers, Freddy Mercury, is the writer, blender of 3 very different songs, is the piano player, costume designer, opera and rock lover, so he wrote this - the first "Rock Opera." The lead guitarist, Brian May, plays the guitar he built, at home with his dad. All 4 band members finished uni and had careers outside of music as well as winning all the music awards for years. This song is longer than radio stations wanted to play, Freddie wouldn't budge. Can you imagine this on your car radio, when you had no idea what was coming next?

A young friend of theirs called Zandra Rhodes designed their costumes.
It's dangerous if it comes on in the car and you're driving, cos you have to do head banging during the guitar solo.
Important to note : only in the opening section was it just Freddie’s voice multilayered - in the “operatic section” it was Freddie, Brian and Roger all three multilayered to get that whole-choir effect.
In 1975 the only technology readily available was the multiple track tape recorder. Queen put this together by layering and splicing segments from different tracks. No computers, no autotune, just pure talent, hard work and genius. This technique followed from pioneering work of Delia Derbyshire in the 1960s with the BBC Radiophonics Workshop. Delia created music by physically cutting up tape and changing speed, hence pitch. The Dr. Who theme is her work.

This is the greatest song ever, and that is fact because it always comes out top of surveys through the decades. This video, from 1975, as is the song, was the first pop video ever shown on British TV, and the reason was that Queen were on tour in Japan at the time of recording Top Of The Pops, so they needed something for the show. Christmas No.1 in 1975 and lasted at the top for 9 weeks. Also it was re-released in 1991 when Freddie Mercury died, and was Christmas No.1 again.

Some guidance to the song : it’s starts with Freddie’s struggle in life (the lead vocalist) then he tells his mother that he killed his old him (he was straight then became bisexual) which he is in reality.. the opera section there are two main things you have to know first it’s the phrase: bismillah (an Arabic word meaning in the name of God) which he refers to his native country having the majority of Muslims oppressing the minority Zoroastrian (an Iranian religion) which he is .. Galileo is an Italian astronomer who discovered the planet Mercury (hence his name is Freddie Mercury!) and there are other references to names that needs a whole book to write 😅 bohemian means : socially unconventional person, especially one who is involved in the arts and rhapsody means an instrumental composition irregular in form and suggestive of improvisation. Dictionary.. it’s a very complicated song not in term of music but also it’s lyrics 😂❤
I first heard this in 1975. I was 14. My friend Miles bought it on vinyl. We listened to it in his bedroom with our coats on. There was no heating or double glazing. We affectionately called his bedroom the icebox. Bohemian Rhapsody blew our minds.
I'm old enough to remember seeing this when it first aired on TV. I was equally blown away by how brilliant it was and still is. Queen were just fantastic. There's way too many songs to recommend but you really should watch the Live Aid performance. You'll recognise a few songs. Guaranteed!!

Their performance at the Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium is testimony to that belief and will remain forever in the annals of rock music history. Lead man Freddie Mercury had the god-given combo of being a brilliant musician, composer, and being blessed with one of the finest voices in rock music history.
JPS thank you so much for the Queen reaction they began there music in the 1970s and ended it in the 1990s when the legend singer Freddie Mercury died of aids on the 24 November 1991. They were very famous in Britain and still are. Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar and his parents were Indian they moved to England when Freddie was 17 and made his music hit the carts all over the world Most of the song were written buy Freddie who was born of the name Farrokh Bulsara. In 2018 they even made a movie called Bohomian Rhapsody it’s amazining. And the band Queen also did live aid for the African poverty to raise money you can react to it on RUclips aswell if you like

Ok, I am blown away by the fact that you have reached the age of 18 and have not heard of Queen, let alone Bohemian Rhapsody. I can only recommend you look them up! Amazing to watch your reaction, believe me when I say, when this first came out in the 70's everyone was reacting just like that. Something so totally different, and still regarded today to be a masterpiece. And like so many of the other comments here, please go and watch their 'Live Aid' appearance. Wembley Stadium 1985. That really was something special. And I am sure you will have heard of plenty of their songs before, even if you did not realise it was Queen.

Yeah, it was well known Freddie asked Rodger to sing "that bit" and each time said "no; higher" until Rodger was, in his words, "taking the piss"... then Freddie said "That's it".

@@pissedupreactions3077 That’s what the movie said. Roger himself said if you pay attention to the scene in the movie, he’s re-singing the same note, not actually going higher. That they were ALWAYS pushing in those early days to see how high his voice could go (and Freddie’s as well), but it wasn’t Freddie sitting at the board literally going “higher, higher”. That was dramatic license.

My mother who was in her 50s at the time heard it on the car radio, loved it and went straight out and bought the record.
When the radio stations in the UK found out how long the track was they didn’t want to play it, but a DJ called Kenny Everett played it fourteen times in a row and they credit him to the early success of the record. The high voice was the drummer Roger Taylor. Classic music without a computer in sight! There is a video on YT of Brian May breaking down the track
That little Kenny Everett fact made me laugh so much. Trust him to have gone against the conventional thinking.

Given you’d not heard of Queen, I suspect you’d also not heard of its lead singer, Freddie Mercury. Freddie Mercury was one, if not the, greatest singers that ever lived. He had an amazing voice.
I would strongly recommend doing a reaction video to Queen’s iconic performance at Live Aid in 1985. It’s down as one of the best concert performances of all time.

Gotta love Queen. I grew up to their music playing all the time in the 90’s. The show must go on is musical genius. Silly fact, this was made in the 70’s and the face effect where it goes into the distance was them putting the camera next to the playback monitor creating the effects. No computer graphics back then!

'Bohemian Rhapsody' must be part of American culture these days after being used in the 1992 'Wayne's World' movie. It had an unforgettable scene of the guys singing along to it on the car radio on their ride through the night-time suburban streets in an old 1976 AMC Pacer.
..and being one of the best is an honour given all the rock and pop artists the UK has contributed to the music industry
No idea if Joel would get the 'Wayne's World' references as it was at least a decade before he was born. However, the biopic 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was released just a few years back so that would be a good starting point.

I'm guessing you might have heard We Are The Champions and We Will Rock You at sporting events. You probably have heard alot of Queen songs without realising who they are. They are probably one of the best bands ever and Freddy had an amazing voice. You should probably watch Wayne's World, as they kind of sing along to it in an epic way.

It's so nice watching someone find this song for the first time. It's iconic to so many people in the UK. There is another video called green day crowd sings Bohemian rhapsody. It gets to me every time I watch it. It shows the passion people have for the song, the band and Freddy himself.
The beauty of this masterpiece is that it was in the age before auto tune . A true reflection of their musical genius. Their live performances are even more electrifying
You will now have HOURS, DAYS even of listening to Queen’s music - pure pleasure … and watching Freddie and his mates performing live on stage and seeing for yourself how Freddie could just walk out on stage, grab a tall Mike, and without uttering one word, the audience would be under Freddie’s control and him being the pop meister! What ever Freddie said to do, the audience just did it! To see how much he was loved - watch the Tribute to Freddie concert and see even more fantastic British singing artists! I’d say MONTHS, YEARS! There’s a lot of Queen songs out there to listen to and love. Freddie had the most sublime voice, and the other members of the group - Roger Taylor (drums), Brian May (guitar) and John Deacon (bass) - made such wonderful music together. Enjoy seeking out their back catalogue of work; it’ll be worth it!

A musical masterpiece. This song will be rocking people in another 30 years when a lot of us will be gone. Very few musicians have that kind of ability. Even after all these years Freddie Mercury's voice is still fresh. He also had three very talented band mates. RIP Freddie Mercury.

I'd like to suggest 'I Want To Break Free' just because I find it amusing that that video caused such controversy. Of course it's not surprising given the context with the time period and all, but still, just odd.

Oh Joel so happy you have discovered the best British band to ever grace this planet. Freddie Mercury was an absolute entertainer just watch some of their live performances. Brian May is the lead guitarist, just out of this world. I was lucky enough to catch them at two concerts in Wembley UK 1986 before Freddie sadly passed away a few years later.
Whenever they performance this live, the choral intro wasn't done because it was done entirely by Freddie - every harmony perfectly sung and layered in the recording.
It was 1975 and I was 12 years old. It's so wonderful to see young people discovering the music of my day for themselves! ❤
You should definitely check out more songs from the 1970's.i I'd suggest Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple to get you statred. They're much more experimental than what's out today, imo. Happy journey of discovery! ❤

I was mesmerised and although there were several increasingly angry men waiting to unload my vehicle, I sat transfixed with the doors locked till the song ended. Hi Joel, i'd highly recommend watching Freddie Mercury performing with Montserrat Caballé singing "Barcelona". It's something a bit different as Montserrat was an accomplished Opera singer, regarded as having one of the finest voices of any generation. I'd love to see your reaction to it! Keep up the good work.

Sweetheart, this is 1975 when I was a teen. No autotune, no digital recording. The era of the rock opera style of a few British bands and Queen did it the best here. Bohemian is an unconventional person, usually a wanderer and a rhapsody is a piece of music written without a formal structure that expresses powerful feelings and emotional excitement. I am enjoying watching you discover my era of music.
I was 13 when this song was number 1 in the charts in 1975, and us kids kept singing it all the time. Loved it then, love it now!! It's about Freddie coming to terms with being gay. When Freddie sings he has killed a man, he means he has accepted that the straight man he pretended to be has gone. He was a lovely caring and very shy (when not on stage) man, who although gay, had a woman as the biggest love of his life. A hugely fascinating, and very much missed man. RIP Freddie x ps Bohemian means ' unconventional in an artistic way, and Rhapsody means ' a piece of music with no formal pattern that expresses emotion, so Bohemian Rhapsody is a perfect title for the song.
