- While we would love to retire both elephants from Buttonwood Park Zoo immediately, out of concern for Ruth's health and safety, we believe she should be retired now.
Buttonwood Park Zoo should be permanently closed, not just fined, and all its animals relocated to better homes, including Ruth to TES in TN.
So you people are that hard up for donations, sympathy, and fresh elephants that you'll resort to this pathetic excuse of a report? Pretty pitiful. I guess you have to steal elephants from other organizations to keep your funding alive, but your also taking funding from that zoo that serves many more people than you do with education, field trips, etc. I'm sure your envious but you can hopefully do better than this?

I felt defeated when I read this story. On the Buttonwood Park Zoo in Mass. information page it unlike other zoos does not name the number or names of the elephants held in this cement pen. The entire zoo is only 10 acres. These elephants have lived a hellish existence for too long. Where is the support from the people in Massachusetts? I am beyond disturbed after reading and watching this video. Please update if you have any information, please all elephant lovers let's keep on top of this.

Very excellent idea and point. Shut zoos down Every Where and let people see them from way far on private sanctuaries with real normal and natural lands God designed them to live on. Zoos are prisons and torture to these sensitive gentle giants. Some elephants may not do well with another single particular elephant- it does NOT mean Ruth is the aggressive. one - it seems she's the one being attacked!! Shame on these greedy people. @@revans1961 I believe that is because they are abused and severely neglected and they are to live out the rest of their life in peace. I have seen those Elephants and they are taken care of very well and out to pasture to graze as they would in the wild. Left alone.
I have given to the Elephant sanctuary in Holden law Tennessee as much as I could it is a worthwhile charity for the elephants where they can be free to be the best they can be

I'm horrified in a very sad way. What has happened during the last 4 yrs? Zoos should be closed - especially and urgently for elephants, apes etc.

Oh my God...these poor elephants are being treated so inhumanely! Where are the authorities, where are the animal welfare groups that are supposed to prevent neglect and cruelty to animals and protect them?? This is reprehensible and I can’t understand why this zoo is even still allowed to remain open. They must be closed down immediately and ALL their animals sent to sanctuaries! My heart is breaking for those poor, sweet innocent elephants and every animal suffering so cruelly at that HELLHOLE called Buttonwood Zoo!! I love the way you guys name and expose. I'm not into puritanical justice for the sake of it....however (not but) these zoo's and reserves that through either a lack of caring or proper systems in place are hurting, yes physically hurting the animals they are in "trust" of. I hate hearing or seeing this kind of "incompetent abuse of animals. They deserve to have their wards taken from them and exposed for their lack of management. Most citizens and visitors to TN don’t even know about the Sanctuary or how to visit it and Rumor has it you can not ever see the else’s that are there so I’m glad to have it but we should be able to enjoy it to a greater extent and welcomed and encouraged to participate in this expensive endeavor in hard times incoming now. We need joy.
You can go on FB or YT or the gram to see them. They view the Sanctuary as a retirement haven for the ellies after decades of work and pain for our entertainment. Maybe if you volunteer?

I worked at buttonwood for 14 years. I remember when Ruth arrived I actually worked with Emily and Ruth every day for a long time. I applaud the staff at buttonwood for their thankless task. It’s not an easy job. But I totally agree and have felt for a long time that the girls should be retired to the sanctuary. I agree. It is so sad that this elephant didn't get to the sanctuary until she was 70. It's like a person having a rough life and getting abused and then going to a much nicer place and experiencing comfort and happiness for the first time at age 70, that is heartbreaking

All I see here is negative comments. I have to ask, have any one of you met the people that run this zoo? I did some community service for this place a few days ago. They had built a new habitat for the elephents. Emily and Ruth were not near eachother of fighting. Both were calmly eating and in no sigh of distress. I did not see either elephant limp or have any injuries. They also had a zoo member that was staying by their spot and telling everyone all about them individually. Their home was neat and clean and the workers really had consern for them. Nothing is perfect all animals should be wild and free but maybe we don't know the full story here.
I grew up near this zoo and always thought there wasn't enough room for any of the animals. I hated it once I was older.
Now since you live nearby . What do you do about it? Have you made your voice heard?

It is now 2019 and I wonder. What happened to Ruth? To the Zoo. I would like to see the Zoo shut down, and the owners held responsible for this severe case of neglect. But as things are in US today I have absolutely no hope for these two victims. I tried to visit the link Rebekah had put out, but of course it was just leading me to an error Webb page. When you can put children in cages, what are the option for an animal in need of help? We are truly living in the darkest times. And the people of America that still remain humans have so much to fight against that I can't blame them for not take actions against this tragedy. But it is this hope of change. So this implies zoo has no intention of allowing retirement. No happy ending here it seems. Wish something could be done.

I feel so helpless - I have donated as much as I can. There must be SOMEBODY who can help these deserving elephants find a new home in an elephant sanctuary who can take PROPER care of them!! I opine if Emily is a bully to Ruth, why would Emily be sent to the safe haven of Ruth; for surely anxiety will remain for Ruth if she can even sense Emily's presence?

As of 1/11/2020 Ruth and Emily are still at Buttonwood Park Zoo. Please visit GoFundMe.com/R-ElegalFund and donate what you can; even if its $10, every dollar counts in this fight for freedom. It is absolutely disgusting that the city has been given proof of abuse and they continue to allow this to happen; I am outraged and so should you be! And please share this all over Facebook, twitter, where ever possible, this needs to change and now! Ruth and Emily have given way too much of their life to these horrible conditions and deserve the life they were meant to live...FREE!
Free to roam in open fields, walk into a lake and splash around (not a rubber tub or a small mud hole) to sleep on grass (not concrete floors), to have others alike surrounding them (they are social creatures-family oriented), have veterinarians actually care for them (not allow ears to fall off because of frost bite or sores from concrete beds), to be able to drink without having to lift their partially paralyzed trunks up onto a tub), the list goes on and on... These beautiful creatures deserve to know what love and compassion feels like. WE, the people, should demand this!! Please take a stand for Ruth and Emily before its too late!

I don't want to watch the entire video. It is painful. We American are richest country on the earth and our animals were treated bad. We have a lot of land and sanctuaries are ready to take them in. Give elephant a warm place to live because they deserve it. They are mistreated creature. Just give them a little love. Have mercy on them.
