I love this movie. As corny as it is, imo, William Marshall was the ultimate Dracula. He had the look, the charm, and the horror element added to his character. He was basically Gary Old man's Dracula before there was one.
Gary Oldman basically is playing Blacula. A badass Prince watches his wife die gets cursed with being a vampire finds her centuries later in a strange land, and still loves her and she actually loves him. That’s not the story of Dracula, that’s the story of Blacula. Francis ford Coppola ripped off Blacula.
You should watch William Marshall's interview about the film, he speaks on how it was a Conscious effort on his part to play the role as dignified as possible because he didn't like how blaxplotion was portraying black society. Its quite interesting.🙂
Fun Fact: The gorgeous Actress”Ketty Lester” who portrayed the “female cab driver Juanita” also portrayed the great aunt Lucy on House Party 3 starring Kid & Play, with guest stars immature & also Bernie Mac as Uncle Vester
It’s a very good movie, but very funny nonetheless. I remember when my brother who was suffering from cancer and I watched this movie together on a late night. We enjoyed it tremendously and specially that line “that’s the rudest…..” we were on the floor laughing but over all it’s a very good and meaningful movie disguised as a black exploitation movie, but that’s what makes it so great.

As much as there are cheesy and terrible vampire movies, what I love about the metaphor of vampires is how incredibly malleable it is. I do credit this film has Count Dracula as not just the ultimate vampire, but the ultimate embodiment of white supremacy, slavery, colonialism, etc. It’s such a interesting metaphor that I will always see a movie that will have something appealing to it even with so many glut of shitty vampire movies. Hell, even “Dracula 2000” had Dracula as Judas!
Dracula was based on Vlads the impeller. Who killed and drank the blood of his enemies ,the Moors who were black people. So there's more truth in this movie than most realise.

Charles Macauly is the most frightening Dracula beating out Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee. I like how we get the added element of Dracula as a racist. Speaking of "It's you who comes from the jungle" Hammer planned a Dracula film that would have had Dracula and Van Helsing in the jungles of India (Kali would be part of the plot) but Hammer was on the way out by that time and the film was never heard.
I've never seen Blacula after hearing Korey & company talking about it I might go check it out not to mention I've always been curious about this movie.
From what I recall, the cops weren't as antagonistic to him from the Lt to the other beat cops, at least in this precinct to a black scientist. One of the pushbacks that stood out to me what when the Lt asked if it was the Panthers and Dr Thomas gave him that look. :) I wonder, is it because they know him, and it's the "other black folks" who are the problem? Maybe, the Lt wife' seemed pretty cool as well to have Dr Thomas' wife hang out while the boys went investigating.
Historically speaking, the actual Vlad would've likely been very racist against brown people. His nation was on the frontline of the war against the Ottoman Empire. I love how Paul Cornell leans into that during his Captain Britain comic series.
It stinks because here it shows Dracula is evil from the start He only believes in his own superiority not equality Because of his immortality and power he believes he can rule over any of his minions however he pleases There’s a lot of themes about the social climate of slavery and racism if you look deeper Dracula is just as bad as any colonizer
Expert on Star Trek: TOS guest stars here: Rasulala was not in Star Trek TOS. Wiliiam Marshall was so was the guy who cursed him in the beginning of the movie.
I’ve been ripping on the band in this movie for well over 30 years. Always thought that song was laughable, and the dancing was even worse. Didn’t know who they were or that they had legitimate cred. My bad.

@Lenin Dominguez Well there is a movie in the works that will act as the conclusion to the show. So, I’m happy about that the only problem is they can only put so much in a movie runtime.
Based on Dracula turning him into a vampire as an eternal curse, I can't see his thirst for blood being an advantage for his people. I also found it interesting that he made his way towards America instead of his homeland. His victims are black americans and like the vampire lore goes, their only concern is for their nest that they turn. His curse forces him to see humans as food. It would be different if he was half vampire half human like blade. The soul of a human with the grace of a monster; which came from fallen angels creating nephilim. So everything about a vampire goes against the human race.
