Epic movie would be a main character at on old age showcasing some kid the many crazy weapons they collected in their lifetime telling some short anecdotes with flashbacks (both biographical/exposition parts and just plain fun bombastic action clips that show the crazy gameplay and world), then after 20/30 minutes of showing the Borderlands universe and narrative setting, the kid could ask a final question leading to Lillith being mentioned CUE the main story line of the 4 already in full swing, atlas, story progressing fast through the advanced narrative and the ability to jump forward a bit through voice over narration of old man protagonist. Epic final, room to end on a powerful quote of the narrator - that would also be a great structure to link to a prequel/sequel or even spin off series.

It’s so odd that they decided to make Lilith of all people the sort of parental figure to Tina when in the games, it was Roland who found and took Tina under his wing after what happened with her and Hyperion. Goes to show that the production studio didn’t really care much more for the project beyond surface value 🤦🏽‍♂️

    • @schwaaard
      @schwaaard 2 месяца назад +11

To be fair, I can't imagine Hart was playing Roland with the maturity, grit, and stoic kindness that Roland had in the games. It made sense in the games, but if they've got him being slapstick comedic relief, it could be a hard sell. ...And heck, since Lilith is old enough to be her grandmother, I guess making her a parental figure was a logical conclusion. --The whole thing is a Hyperion train wreck anyway, but at least there's some kind of "logic" within the stupidity of their horrible adaptation. ...Sigh...

The best borderlands content that was ever produced was probably "Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep." It not only fleshed out and humanized an otherwise shallow and annoying character, but emotionally grew the entire cast and made them feel like a real "family of misfits." Its final scene was probably the most respectful mourning for a dead character I've seen in modern media.
Tiny Tina's love for Roland as a father figure, who lives on in her mind as an ideal that she begs to be allowed to keep, is one of the most powerful emotional hooks in the Borderlands franchise, and they completely disposed of it because "we need more girl power," as if Borderlands isn't already packed to the gills with that. So shallow.

@@bluedistortions Agreed. TTAoDK was also one of the funnier patches of content in the series, which made the increasingly emotional scenes towards the end more poignant. It really did redeem Tina as a character, and made the Vault Hunters much more relatable and...human. Hard to keep humanity on Pandora, but that just made it clear they've still got it.
And they disposed of it? I didn't bother with anything after the Pre-Sequels, so fortunately I wasn't aware that they'd done anything to reverse that. ...Until now. ...Sigh...

So, just to recap, things that most people associate with Borderlands, even if you haven't played it/ don't like it:
    - A Bazillion Guns
    - 9000% more WUP WUP
    - Handsome Jack is not only basically the only well written character in the franchise, but elevated the whole damn thing because his performance was so amazing
    - Horrific gore and violence
    - Foul language and disturbing jokes
    - the fact that Borderlands 1 while great in it's own way, is kinda bland and boring, especially the characters
    - people care mainly about the Borderlands 2 cast
    - opinions on how annoying Tiny Tina is may wary
    - Claptrap DEFINITELY gets annoying when he's around too much
    - The whole Vault at the end of B1 was a giant letdown
And what the movie did, was ignore ALL OF THAT?
Like, I am aware that Borderlands is no lyrical Masterpiece and I don't blame anyone that doesn't love it.
But in the very least it has it's own identity. A vibe. You can show people clips from it and it's recognisable.
Turning it into home made Guardians of the Galaxy just seems like a crime.
Hell, when the trailer came out and there was neither Dubstep, nor "No rest for the Wicked"? We should have already known this was doomed...

I don't understand why they didn't just adapt the first game, bring in Brick, Mordecai, Roland and Lilith, easy set up, 4 vault hunters, looking for a huge treasure in something called a "Vault" on a planet called Pandora, boom, there's the plot, make it Rated-R, add in iconic lines from the game's, make the cast AGE APPROPRIATE, maybe casting little or unknown actors in the roles, (that are either actually gamers, are fans of the world, or, have at least played through it once and knows the characters well), bring in the VA from the game's for Claptrap, and you have yourself a hit.
They could do the Pre-Sequel next if they so choose, as a film adaption, maybe even Tales from The Borderlands somewhere in the mix of these films too.
The 2nd main film could bring in Zero, Maya, and the other VH's from BL2, meeting Tiny Tina for the first time, adding the DLC stories as side adventures within the film, (no reason to have any "fluff" or trying to "make up things for the characters to do between plot beats"), and ending the 2nd film after Fight for Sanctuary.
So much potential, squandered by people who not only didn't care about any accuracy at all with characters, (including Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox, he clearly didn't care that this film was being butchered), but had zero knowledge of what the heart of the game's and this world means to us gamers who love playing the Borderlands games to this day, I'll give it maybe 5-8 years, maybe they'll try again, have it done right, and then I can look forward to going to the movies to see this. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Kevin Hart was blatantly cast to play the stereotypical "slightly cowardly comic relief black character". So, the exact opposite of calm collected paladin Roland, the man of few words. Also, casting a guy who is only 1.65m tall and thus is noticably _smaller_ than the two female leads (who are 1.70m and 1.74m tall respectively) to play Roland, who was _tall,_ serious, brave and charismatic, is a terrible choice.

If i wrote a borderlands movie, id have the cast from the first game and focus on a character arc for each. Roland could learn to take and make jokes after being constantly stoic and deadpan while teaching strategy. Brick could learn to be less brutish and more intelligent (maybe he kills bandits early on before getting crucial information from them and everyone scolds him to mybe think first). Lillith would be focusing on learning her siren abilities and about other sirens while eager to prove herself since she's the youngest. For Mordecai, maybe focus on his drinking problem and that he doesn't need it to be a good shot. and maybe learning to trust others since it was just him and bloodwing for a long time.

The casting was a punchline in itself, the trailers made it looks like no one used lights during filming, and they made it PG-13 because they were too scared to commit to the audience the way Deadpool did. It would have been a shock if it was a success.

You're missing a bit of the context on the vault from the games. The vault hunters were manipulated into pursuing the vault by Angel with the promise of treasure, riches, and power. But her real motives were for the vault hunters to stop the Destroyer from being unleashed on Pandora. It was a bit of a let down gameplay wise but it 100% does work within the lore of the series.

Cate Blanchet should never be in a video game movie. No one with an Oscar nomination should be anywhere near it. You need 20 actors of the Bruce Campbell level, or Seth MacFarland, It should be a B movie, and all the money saved should go into gore and scriptwriting.

..jack black would have been perfect as Marcus. Imagine, the movie starts with a timeless fade in. To a pencil sketched story book. Then jack black begins narrating the history of the heros for the waste land. The vault hunters..god i could have used this game at least doing as well as an occult classic, but this aint no place for no heros.

No, and this is what people don't seem to understand. A movie like this needs either very good character actors or unknown actors. Any time I hear Jack Black or see Kevin Hart I'm reminded this isn't Borderlands. And while Cate Blanchet was horribly miscast, at least she's a great actress who believably pulls off Mommy Lilith.

The thing is I would absolutely enjoy a borderlands wacky adventure of how the crimson raiders came to be leading up to the presequel - bl 2 - and 3
But they didnt', they ignored every rule when adapting a video game movie. Especially the golden rule. That rule being "RESPECT THE LORE" if you're going to add stuff make sure you don't spit on the lore.

They should have had writers and a director that actually know what this series is, who are also mega fans of the series. This was just a Hollywood cash grab trying to cosplay as a Borderlands movie. It's disgusting. Imagine if the team had been fans and brought us some crazy Handsome Jack film with Borderlands humor, lore, etc. -- that would have been great. Instead we got whatever the heck this movie is trying to be. Tbh, it's so offensive to the franchise and fanbase, that I wouldn't be surprised if Gearbox looks into taking them to court. The movies are supposed to bring in new fans to the game, and generate revenue for future movie and TV projects, but this...dead in the water.

What happened to Lilith & Tannis? They both occupied the hot chick roll in the game. Lilith in particular was a ringer for Warehouse 13's Allison Sgaglotti during her red hair phase. Heck a Scag was even one of the first beasties you run into.
They finished shooting this film in 2021. You're really saying they ran out of time to do CGI and post production?
