I relate that to my mental health as well, I used to think "when i'm less depressed i'll do this, and that" and i spend a few years of my life doing nothing???????? And nothing got better????????? And then i discovered that i could do things i wanted and needed when i was unwell and by doing them i'd feel better???????

Had to screenshot this comment; maybe because it’s comforting that others feel things that I do. Doing something and it seemingly going no where is discouraging but doing nothing is resoundingly worse. Moving towards something is undoubtedly the route to clearing fog. Thank you.

It's so easy to get cause and effect mixed up when you're depressed. I know, because I've been there myself. Waiting for the day I felt well enough to get out of the house didn't get me anywhere - having a reason to go out despite not feeling all that well did.

On revenge bodies, I think Marty McConnell said it wonderfully in her poem ‘Frida Kahlo to Marty McConnell’:
    “don’t lose too much weight.
    stupid girls are always trying
to disappear as revenge. and you
are not stupid. you loved a man
with more hands than a parade
of beggars, and here you stand. heart
like a four-poster bed. heart like a canvas.
    heart leaking something so strong
they can smell it in the street.

i somewhat agree with you about how changing your appearance doesn't really affect your life - however i know that, as a girl who wears hijab, if i were to remove it i'd be treated much differently by the people i encounter in so many aspects, and i also think my job prospects would be..wider.. if that makes sense. so, to an extent, you are right carrie, but there are definitely exceptions.

I think we make excuses in different aspects in life because we’re afraid of failing. And we’re also too ashamed to admit that. So we blame something else.
A couple of years ago I thought about doing ‘something’ with all these story ideas I had floating around in my head. But I had no laptop at the time so I said that I would start writing as soon as I had a laptop. I’m now on laptop number 2 since then and still I have not written more than ideas. And not even on the laptop, oh no, in little notebooks!!
I’m more than aware that I’m procrastinating writing a complete story because I’m afraid it will be crap. And this even with my telling myself that first and foremost I want to write for myself, because I really want to see where these ideas could go. Maybe some day. Hopefully.
    I digress.
    Back to body image.
Carrie, continue making these body positive videos, if only for a reminder every now and again.
Looks only get us so far. Sure it’s the first thing anybody “sees” of us. But at the end of the day it’s our personality that makes people want to be around you. Wether for work or personal relationships. Xx

a few years ago you made a video, i think it was called healthy and happy, and i loved it so much that i named one of my bunnies after you, so please never stop making these types of videos :)
i believe studies actually show that there is a correlation between people's body weights and the likelihood with which they will get a callback after a job interview or an apartment sighting, but the correlation is slight, so in statistical terms it is insignificant, which should just show people that it really doesn't matter! i think the reason why people think they will be more successful when they're thinner is because they forget that it's not just body weight => better chances in love or in their career or whatever. it's more like body weight influences your confidence and that, in turn, influences whatever you set out to do. but there's nothing stopping you from working on your confidence even if you have the type of body that society perceives as flawed because it's all a construct and shouldn't bother you anyway (which, of course, is easier said than done).

Even at 30, I needed to hear this Carrie! You have a fabulous way of articulating your thoughts and beliefs and it blows my mind. I hope your younger viewers take in everything you say about body image and process it and come to the conclusion (long before I did) that being kind is the most important thing in the world and if everyone was just a bit more kind to each other and of course, to ourselves, the world would be a much happier place. Thank you Carrie for being an inspiration!

  • @annimelos

I´ve got a similar "problem". A lot of people tell me that I'm to thin and I have to eat more. I eat a lot and even the doctor said that I'm okay. I think it isn't important who you look like. You have to be lucky with yourself. I am lucky with body and with my life (most of the time^^) and thats enough for me.
It´s good to talk about it so keep doing it ;)

This links so beautifully to Girlguiding’s Free Being Me peer education campaign with the Dove Self-Esteem project! It focuses on how important who you are is rather than what you look like and how everyone’s physical appearance is perfect in its own way. It’s one of the best things I’ve had the chance to be involved in - if you’re interested I’d love to tell you more about it Carrie x

Please keep spreading your positivity. I am always striving to emmulate your outlook, strength and confidence. 💕

I found Carrie's message in this video so empowering. Usually, when people comment on these sorts of issues it goes straight over my head, because they don't word it in a way that I can relate to, but this really hit a target for me. This is a sort of dialogue that is integral for our younger audiences.

Carrie: once again you have inspired me to be better. I have struggled with Binge Eating Disorder for years now and am just finally getting to a point where I am ready and willing to put in the effort to change my life and fight. My mind often goes to that train of thought: life will be better when I’m thin, but I know it’s not true. I needed a little reminder, and who better to hear it from than someone I admire so much. You are brilliant and inspire me everyday. Thank you! 💜🖤

Wearing what I was regardless of whether you can see my tummy and posting on instragram real pictures of my body and working on not being ashamed of my squishy rolls of fat- it's one of those things I always said I'd get to eventually. I look up to so many people, you included and have never taken anyone’s weight into consideration when deciding if I like who they are and what they stand for. Also I love these kind of videos, I love sit down videos where people go on about things they feel passionately about, it’s important for people who feel inferior or people who have never looked at things a certain way. I'm very happy that succesful/famous people are becoming more and more diverse. By expanding the spectrum of race/body types/gender/sexuality/culture of the people represented by the media, more and more "normal" people will be able to identify themselves in those celebrities and say "hey, I can do that too", and that's wonderful.

I really needed to hear that. Carrie, it's been a while since I've watched one of your videos, and man have I ever missed you!!! When I first found your channel years ago, I was immediately hooked. Your tea drinking, singing, doodling and everything brought me so much joy. So when I stumbled upon your channel again today, I honestly felt like I had found a lost friend. I have had a rough past few years, dealing with anxiety and depression among other things, the result of which (probably along with my love of ice cream and baked goods) is that I have gained weight, which didn't really help the whole depression thing. But anyway, the point is, that I stopped doing a lot of things that made me happy, especially sharing my music. I keep putting things off, like auditions, and making recordings, saying that I will do it when I've gotten my life together, and gotten back into shape. It's gotten to the point where I sometimes don't want to see friends because I feel like somehow they won't value me as much now that I've gained a few pounds. As if my physical appearance is the be all and end all of my self worth. What's awful is that I have some very wonderful friends, who tell me that I am beautiful, and I won't believe a word of it. Yet somehow, your words resonated with me. You're entirely right. I have to stop keeping myself from doing what I love. So thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

In the past couple of years ive put on quite a bit of weight and when I put on weight it goes on my stomach and it makes me incredibly self conscious as people have asked me if I’m pregnant (and I’m not) which really doesn’t help my confidence but recently it’s gotten so bad I can barely look at myself but you have started to make me realise size really doesn’t matter and as long as you’re happy who gives a shit, and I really need to remember that and it’s nice to hear it every now and again. I like anything you talk about, Carrie. Body image isn't my favorite topic to watch because I simply don't relate to it like the other viewers (I got past my insecurities already). Also it's not my favorite because my favorite topic you discuss is BY FAR writing (like that writing q&a was SUPER BOMB). But I don't want to downplay body image discussions because it is a very important topic to have a conversation about with so many young, beautiful people struggling with those issues. Thank you for pointing out the positive aspect of things like "you don't have to be thin to be successful." It's reminders like those that young and old people today need to hear. Love you lots!

Carrie, I completely agree. We need more body positivity in the world. Everyone is beautiful
In other news, I bought my first CHF merch, and I'm wearing it( the red shirt with white polka dots) for the first time, and it is beautiful! I love it!

Thank you for this chat, I really needed this reminder. It is so easy to get caught up in the mind set that if I achieve some ideal body shape I have imagined in my mind, then I will be brave enough to try the things I want, or happier, like you said. But I have been really trying to work on accepting myself the way am now, and not only just accepting myself but also embracing myself right now. With all the things I see as flaws, I try to remember that just because I see myself that way sometimes doesn’t mean that is how the rest of the world sees me. Changing your body image can be a long process but I really appreciate your positive messages! Thank you!
    Love,
    A Hopeful :)

I would like to thank you, I watch these videos on body positivity and accepting the size you are, and knowing that we share a similar size from the last time you shared that information, it is a nice reminder that life doesn't really change when you lose the weight but it also helps me deal with my own confidence and it helps me build on my own mentality. So I am very grateful for it

Personally, I’ve been loving these body positivity videos! As someone who has been through surgery and got the battle scars and has always been curvy, shinning a light on all different body types has had a positive affect on me! As long as these videos make you happy Carrie that’s the most important thing!

    Dear Carrie,
Thank you for continuing the conversation about weight loss vs success. For so many years I felt the same way that you have,. "When I get thinner, my relationship will be better...I will be happier..I'll travel more...people will like me more." The list went on and on, but you know what? Some of my happiest years, and most life changing moments were when I was at my biggest weight. I graduated with honors, I found my best friend, I made a group of ever lasting friends, all while I was 220 pounds. Three years later and I might be 40 pounds lighter, but there has been no "miracle change". The person that I was then, is still the person I am now. I have changed only through conversations, life experiences, and looking deep into myself. The weight loss was a side effect of those things. Nothing more, truly.
To anyone that is reading this, who may be thinking this way, that weight loss is the answer. With all the love in the world my dear friend, it is not. Life changes you, the weight loss is an after effect. If you like to workout because it makes you happy then continue to do so, if you absolutely hate it then just do you. As long as you are a kind, open minded person who loves, then you are wonderful in my books :)
Carrie, thank you for so many years of videos, conversations and laughter.
With love from Cochrane, Ontario, Canada
    Hillary
PS. I gave your first book to a cab driver a few years back for his daughter. He cried as he skimmed the pages, and wanted me to thank you if I ever got the chance. So thank you

Words can’t describe how much it means to me that you speak about body positivity. It’s always been and will always be my greatest struggle, and since the age of 5 I have had the mentality that if I’m thinner I’ll be more successful/more well liked/I’ll miraculously become funnier and the life of the party - but in my heart I know that’s not the complete truth.
I’m currently dealing with the fact that I’ve never been kissed, which is something I never thought I’d care about until recently. I’ve been here thinking that if I’m thinner I’ll be prettier and then someone will finally want to kiss me, but that’s not true. This video reminded me of that. Thank you so much, I’ll never be able to find the right words to string together to say thank you. This means so much Carrie. So many people need to hear it.

Thanks babe I needed that!!! As a single mum, I sometimes feel like oh if I lost weight or bought “that” it would help finding love again, but then I look at my amazing daughter and realise that’s my love right there. And if the right guy comes along he will love me as I am, wobbly bits and all!!! Besides, I rock!! Lol ;)

I very much used to feel this way, but not just thin, it was everything, when I get that car, this will happen, when I sort my depression out that will happen. It was actually a quote that made me think about this and re-evaluate: Happiness is not a destination. It is a mood, it is not permanent. It comes and goes and if people thought that way then maybe people would find happiness more often.
Thanks for being amazing and such an inspiration

I've had this mentality throughout my entire life. I still have it now, every now and then. Its like just because I'm fat, I'm not worthy of being happy, or satisfied with myself. It's an incredibly toxic chain of thought. Especially when trying to be a singer, Ive been accepted to several tv shows for singing competitions, and haven't gone to a single one after that first audition because I become terrified of not being enough. I'm tired of living that way, worth comes in so many different ways, and for sure more important ways than just outwards appearence: Integrity, passion, talent, creativity, drive, empathy, understanding, loving... Why dont we prioritize these qualities instead of our fat? It becomes like second nature, and thats why its so dangerous. I'm trying to change that mentality, one step at a time. You dont deserve to beat yourself up for something thats really not that important. Be happy, value what really matters. Glad that these talks are back, Carrie:) xx

Yes!! The more people that talk about body positivity the better. I adore radical body positivity, but I think you offer a gentler (but no less passionate) approach. And honestly some people get scared off by people yelling YOU’RE ALLOWED TO LOVE YOURSELF and WEIGHT DOES NOT EQUAL VALUE, which is probably something to do with their preconceived notions being challenged. But the more you talk about it and normalise a loving relationship with food, exercise and our bodies, the better xxxx

Thank you so, so much for this. Today I’ve been really down on myself - I’m severely chronically sick & at the moment, the medication I’m on and some of my illnesses cause me to gain weight (also the fact that I’m incapable of working out for an extended period of time and my diet is terrible because I can’t eat most things). I saw how much I weighed today and came home and cried.
This entire video was needed so much. I’m so appreciative of this video and of you. Sending healing hugs & vibes to your back and hand! 🧡

I'm gratefull for videos like these, we need more people talking about body shaming on social media. We are sorrunded by pictures, adverticings, youtubers, bloggers, influencers, etc, that unconsciously (and sometimes consciously) show us that being thinner would make your life happier. All these beautiful girls on instagram with their perfect abs taking pictures in the gym, o eating a letucce salad, with a comment below saying something like "this is life". They're just lying to people. And personally, It's so comforting when people like you put a stop at all these. We need people to realice that life is not based in how much did you eat that day, your weight, your waist or anything like that. We need to show them that your body shape DOES NOT DEFINE YOU.
Thanks Carrie for these beautiful message that we all should share xx.

It is always good to hear people to talk about body confidence. This is something I have to work on everyday. I am 38 years old and have been up and down in size from a size 14 to a 26 plus. I have to say whatever size I have been I have never felt happy in myself and that is sad. If I could go back to my 18 year old self I would give myself a stern taking to life is too short. In saying that I have done things at all weights I have travelled the world. Met some amazing people and I help people in my job and that is the best feeling. The message that you can be whoever you want to be needs to be carried to everyone. Enjoy who you are and the amazing opportunities we get in whatever way they come.

I have a bad back on and off too. My physio said one can relieve it by building up the core muscles as it takes away some of the pressure. I lean over a lot because I'm an illustrator so muscles shorten etc hope this helps!

Carrie, you have eloquently explained such an important message! As a teenager starting recovery from an ED, I can vouch that being thinner doesn’t mean that your life will fall into place. In fact, until recently I would say my life was falling apart - nourishing your body and not punishing it actually will help you, both creatively and mentally - it’s just that we are living in a warped world which states that people (with a particular emphasis on women) will be sexier, more attractive and more successful if they are thinner. Please just be yourself and enjoy yourself - don’t waste time hurting yourself (be your own friend) x
