  • In this video I aid Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks biologists in a fish survey on the Kansas River in Kansas City. These surveys are used to assess the species richness in aquatic ecosystems as well as population sizes. Biologists use the information attained in these surveys to form fishing reports and forecasts for anglers.
The resulting data from this particular survey resulted in many different species both native and non native fish.
So if you enjoy fishing here is a behind the scenes look at what goes into those reports

Good to see the Kansas River still supporting a good population of Common Carp! They are a blast to catch on rod and reel- and good eating, too!

Have you ever caught one on a fly rod? That is a blast!

@@invasivebrews I’ve hooked up on a grass carp (and lost it) but not a common, yet! Looking forward to it!

That they have! State and federal agencies do try to manage their populations in areas they have completely taken over to help out our native species.

Silver Carp and Big Head Carp are different species than common and grass carp. Common carp and grass carp are naturalized and are not invasive. Silver and bighead carp are invasive. There's also no such thing as a sucker carp. Those are two different species. It's either a sucker or a carp. It's disappointing to see government money being spent on these expeditions with supposed biologists who can't differentiate between invasive and native fish and don't even know the species of fish they are supposed to be cataloging

When he said the River carp he was referring to a River carpsucker (Carpiodes carpio) not a sucker carp. Grass carp are becoming increasingly invasive in areas because they are not the triploid ones that are sold which are sterile. I have been on several surveys for different state and federal agencies and have seen the damage they can cause in areas they have become invasive commons as well. In the area we sampled that day we had 3 of the 4 carp species native to Asia only missing the Black carp (thank goodness). The Common carp is a naturalized nonnative from Europe and state and federal agencies do try to mitigate their populations to protect our native biodiversity.

Why are letting the invasive species back into the river?

They were euthanized humanly before they were put back in the river.
