  • Another great question lead to this video: What do you do when you start late with competitive rowing? There are things within your control and things outside of it.

Totally agree. Athletic predispositon and prior strength training are important stepping stones. Morevover - know who you are, genetically - strength/endurance ratio, height/weight are important, meaning: are you in the competitive range? Most important though: check your health status. I was rowing all along happily with Pulse >170, being 44. This could have ended deadly with prior health conditions. You need to monitor pulse all the time in my opinion when you are >40. Personally, I find that best competitive chances are on the erg - you just can't make up years of technical experience. On the erg though, it's easier to compete without having to worry about blade placement, etc. Also, you can get really good data on how you compare worldwide.

Aram, what about people who have taken a break of ~1 year. How should I structure my training to get back into it?

Hello, what about people who come back to recreational rowing after being a competitive rower and a gap of 40 years? I have came back to enjoy rowing after a 40 year gap.

This requires a special re-build up program. Most comeback rowers lack the physiology but not the memory of how it used to be, which is an effective recipe for injuries.
