100% wear most clothes multiple days. Keeps them in good condition for longer - not so much wear and tear from over washing. And regarding separating laundry, I just have a rule about no towels or linty things with dark colors. We only hang dry, and the lint can be a thing with dark clothes.

I also found myself forgetting there were things in the washer. So now, in the morning I go to the laundry room.....I take what's in the dryer (or hanging) and put it away. I take what's in the washer and put it in the dryer (or hang it). And I put a new load in the washer. The next morning, I repeat the process. So I'm only making one trip to the laundry room per day. It's worked great for years!

You are adapting the system to your family's needs. Good for you. Too often we think we gave to " follow or fail" and that is not true. We need to all do what works for us.
I am retired and single. Except for underwear I often wear my clothing g more than once. In fact, I have 1 pair of pants to wear around the house to dohousework or just relax. And have 3 pairs to wear outside when doing errands, going to lunch with friends, for a walk or a lecture at the library. Because I often wear them for less than 3 hours at a time my " outside " pants are taken off immediately, hung up to air out and yes, reworn a few times before washing.

I do a load a day, too. Even if I don’t have a full load, my washer weighs the clothes and uses only the necessary amount of water, so I feel OK with that. It only takes a few minutes to sort and put away the clothing, instead of spending a whole day doing laundry once a week. Once you get your laundry room, where you want it, you will be amazed at how much easier it will become.❤

    • @susannovak8263

@@wonderingsanna - yes, it’s the same amount of energy to run the cycle. Less water and less energy to heat that water offsets that, to a degree.

    • @wonderingsanna

So... it´s a better use of energy to fill up a whole machine. No one runs a dishwasher for two glases, right? this is the same thing.
And, the machine gets worn by every load, so for maximum best use of it is to always do full loads.

Thursdays I wash my husband's clothes. Fridays I wash kids clothes. 😊 I only fold my husband's clothes and use the weekends to catch up on putting away if needed.

You could put in your load of the day and at the same time take out the wash out of the dryer from the day before and then fold. So you do laundry only once a day and don't meed to go back later.
We have our washing machine in our bathroom (very common here), so we put our dirty clothes directly into the washing machine. Whenever I notice it's full I just start it. White and 60° we "store" in the drier (we never use the drier, we line dry everything). I love this simple system, it's so managable to do about 2 loads a week. We re-wear a lot too! 😊

  • @goodenoughgirl8102
    @goodenoughgirl8102 Год назад +2

Well, it’s just me and the cats so ....I really don’t have a load a day. Thankfully. 😅😅
I def rewear my clothes. When I batch my errands, I wear something better than the usual lounge wear or grunge clothes. But I’m back in a few hours and nothing much is really dirty.
That brings me to my other thing which is my door hooks. It’s where I hang the “in between” clothes until they’re actually dirty. Usually it’s the errand outfit, the jammies and a robe. I also keep my cleaning rags/household stuff separate from the clothes in an out of the way place until I have enough for a load.
I also use color catchers. I also often use the delicate cycle for clothes often (vs household stuff) so they last longer.

I guess I'm lucky to have space for separating the clothes into 3 groups, lights, whites, and darks. The 3 sectional hamper fits between the washer and dryer. When one gets full I wash them. When the dryer goes off I fold by taking the largest items out first and using the top of the washing machine and the top of the dryer to fold and stack by person. There's something about folding warm clothes that I just love. It's the best part of the job. My laundry room is between the bathroom and our bedroom. If I ever build again I will have a walk-in closet/laundry room together. Leave my bedroom in the morning, get clothes for the day from the closet/washroom, shower, put dirty clothes in the hamper, and done. Just shut the door when company comes. LOL

Except when I had babies/toddlers (and I used Dreft for their laundry), I have always done laundry the "college load" style - all clothes, unseparated by colors, in one load, cold water (which is actually both economical and ecological). I do separate by category: Clothing, Bedding, Towels/Bath Mats. And I do laundry once a week - (and clean house once a week) - on Thursdays. Why Thursdays? Because (1) I'm not going to waste my weekend days doing chores, and (2) if I'm having people over on Friday, Sat, or Sun, the house is ready for guests! This is my way of protecting my sanity and mental wellness

So great to have your perspective on Dawn’s laundry routine! I have evolved to routine that is very similar. Just one load per day. My husbands clothes and mine are commingled in a single basket. I wash all in cold with tide pods which I love. Since we have fewer clothes with just 2 of us, I wash towels all together on one day, and sheets on a different day. But I stay at one load/day start to finish. It really works!

looks like you have enough space next to the appliances for bins. I would encourage you to use one per child and have each child go get their things to put away. Also, make a “how to” chart when they’re reading age and have them take turns doing the laundry. Great life skill.

Especially useful for here in the U.K. where we either line dry outdoors in the summer and indoors in the winter. Doing washing weekly without a tumble dryer simply would not work. I love the load a day system. We also have our washing machine in the garage.

This method works well with a larger family. I kept doing this method after my kids moved out but recently switched back to once or twice a week. If I have to go through all of the same motions every day it just gets to be too much.
If I had kids at home now, I think I would wash one persons laundry each day. Pretty simple.

I have seen minimal mom and her laundry routine. I would like to add that she air-dried her jeans. I live in sunny Arizona where I discovered that Tshirts and dresses can dry on clothes hangers. I put all of my clothes on hangers and hang them up in my closet. I practice minimalism so there is room for the clothes to dry without touching. Most times all the clothes are dry in 24 hours. But mostly my clothes last and look new for a very long time. I save money on electricity and air conditioning because the dryer isn't heating my house. I save time on folding and space to house a large chest of drawers. I would also like to assume that your child that folds his clothes looks nicer than the one who just threw them in the drawer. If your goal is just to get done minimal mom is good enough. She's got you! But if you want to look nicer, neater and have your clothes last longer with our shrinkage; air-dry is better. I rarely need to get out and iron which is my least favorite thing. Love your videos!

My husband and I are retired, so I removed our laundry baskets altogether. Our laundry area is immediately across from our bedroom and behind our kitchen, so it is convenient to put dirty clothes directly into the empty washer. We have about one week's worth of underwear, so I run one load one day per week. I use a method that I found online, I don't remember where, but it almost eliminates soap.
    1. Agitate in warm water for 3 minutes. (I use an old fashioned bell kitchen timer.) No soap. Drain.
    2. Refill tube adding 1/4 to 1/8 the normal amount of soap, sheets make easy, and 1/4 to 1/8 oxyclean. Agitate for 3 minutes and soak for 5 hrs or overnite. Drain.
    3. Run washer through normal cycles, again using only 1/8 normal soap.
    4. Run washer last time with no soap. This becomes a double rinse.
    5. Place in dryer with wool dryer balls.
    6. Fold underwear on washer and hang everything else immediately.
After the first few times I couldn't believe how much soap was coming out of our clothing. Now this method has become routine, and no more soap residue. This method uses more water, but it is cleaner water, with no chemicals. Our clothes are wearing better and are so soft without soaps and chemicals. A longer process for me, but better in my opinion.
    Hope this helps someone else.😊

I love the idea . I follow her too. I can’t really apply this as I don’t have a washer and dryer and have to go to the community laundry facility. Wish there was a way to simplify that. When I got pregnant with my 3rd my husband started helping more with laundry and still does. So I mainly wash the kids clothes and mine and he does his clothes and towels . Sheets and blankets is kinda a coin toss. Can’t wait for the day to have my own washer and dryer. And I hang dry so much so the cotton clothes don’t shrink. Especially the kids since they go through sizes so fast.

When I had my third baby I was in tears with keeping up with laundry. A friend then (7+ years ago!) suggested what she did, which was to have them wear their clothes MonTues then WedThurs then FriSat. And church clothes Sunday. So unless they're filthy they rewear things. They sometimes even still ask "if today is new clothes day." 😅

When I grew up, my mom taught me and my sister to do laundry once a week. We did not have that many clothes. We had play clothes/shoes, uniforms/ school shoes and Sunday dress or 2/Sunday shoes. We wore same play clothes over if we did not get filthy dirty. We used our towels over as well. We also hung our clothes and sheets on the line until we got a dryer in later years. To this day I do laundry once a week. My mother always said it saved money on detergent and saved water usage. Of course, everyone should do what works for their family. But I find nowadays that it seems folks have way too many clothes and shoes.

    Hi Shannon!
There is a balance in this system that needs to work to... One has to have enough clothes to fill up the washing machine when doing the laundry. To wash half full machines is a waste of energy and wather and not good for the environment.
I think it´s a good idea not to save huge piles of laundry but to set one machine a day as a rule might not always "work".
We have decluttered alot of clothes tho we have saved the amount that will fill our huuuge washing machine.

I am trying to get to the load a day thing. Do you wash towels in the same load as clothes? Also, like you, some days we don’t have a load. As a homeschooling SAHM, we too, recycle our clothes. We do have to have separate loads for our clothes and my husband’s work clothes as he works on a trucking dock and his stuff gets black soot all in it!! I no longer separate colors to wash. If I have something I feel “might” fade I throw in a Shout Color Catcher sheet. I love those things!! I try to hang the laundry as I take it out of the dryer but my laundry is inside the house. It’s all a process. I’m still working on it and resetting my house to be more minimal. Why not put an inexpensive throw rug in front of appliances..you can shake out dust often and eliminates issue of dust from floor on clothes.
I find people complaining about laundry so frustrating. I have never had a washer in the house my whole life living out from my parents home..and I am 76. I raised 2 kids with no washer or dryer…laundromat only…and still go, but now less often. You are so lucky to have these appliances! And I find these frustrating because you are so blessed…😍
The Flylady system also says one load a day.. start as soon as you can and complete whole load from start to put away. I would have happily done this “chore”! I think if you keep up the system it would eliminate your problem..also teaching your children to take care of things is priceless! We did monthly finance lessons and basics of housework recap-this lead to the kids being savvy about budgets and how to fix and clean their own homes. Did they love it? I put a timer on when I put on a load of laundry - our machine takes 45 minutes. That way I can grab the clothes as soon as they are washed so I can flick out each item as I take them out of the washing machine and put them in the dryer - this prevents them getting wrinkly - no ironing! (our clothesline is currently inaccessible).

I love the load a day method. I started with the birth of my first baby in 1979. I was an overwhelmed new mother.
Decades later as a retired grandmother I still think in terms of a load a day. Now that habit translates to looking at the hamper and seeing if there’s enough for a wash.
I start the load first thing in the morning along with coffee and unloading the dishwasher (another “load a day” routine). It’s around mid morning to put it in the dryer and after lunch was my moment to get it put away. Now in our apartment I hear the buzzer when the washer and dryer finish.
Because it became part of the daily rhythm I rarely forget but if I do I just transfer it the next morning and dry yesterdays while today’s is washing. Because I remember laundry every morning even if there’s no load that day I am programmed to think and I go AHA! 😂
I wash in hot so it doesn’t get stinky if I forget it in the washer. Keeps my front loader smelling fresh too. And we always get 2 or more wearings out of clothes. That needs to be normalized again. Saves the clothes from excess wear and tear, saves water, energy, detergent and honestly the planet!

I don't have a laundry room so just take the load up to the kids room (they share) and they put away their clothes (folded best they can), mine & my partner's I do in our bedroom and towels etc in fold in mine then put in bathroom. Been doing this for ages and it works well I very rarely get behind on laundry. Having them already sorted saves that step too. However, no matter what I do, where I put it my partner never puts his washing in the basket!

That definitely works for people who have a washer and dryer of their own.
I do laundry once a week. Every other week I do the whites. Every week I do the color. During the Summer, I can do every other week, because I don't have school uniforms then. We also wear clothes more than once too. I hang dry about 50% of our clothes. We have one washer and one dryer for an apartment complex of 7 units. I clean the laundry room and disinfect both machines when I do my family laundry.

I love the simplification of laundry so much. It’s actually one thing I’ve not changed since discovering the Minimal Mom/Dana K White/Clutterbug. I have a laundry day and do our laundry by person without sorting. Mine, my daughters (weekly)and all linens as-needed (bi-weekly). I only separate out new/nicer clothes.

My laundry system for years now have been:
    Mon - sheets
Tues - cleaning rags and hand towels
Wed - me and my husband's clothes
Thurs - my 10yo does her and her 5yo sisters clothes
Fri - my 12yo does her and her 7yo brothers clothes
Sat - I do not do a load but all 4 of my children put their clothes away, no fold method 🙌🏻
Sun - no load to do this day either but I did put a calendar reminder once a month to run a clean wash cycle.
If we don't remember to throw in our 1 towel each in our regular load then I may do a load of bath towels.
And I also do not sort but wash on cold (except my dirt rag load that gets washed on hot) and everything comes out just fine.

Its just myself and my teen daughter so I do a load about every two - three days (we re wear clothes too) and that is with a minimal wardrobe too... twice a week I do towels and once a week bed sheets (only have the one set on our beds) I also sort as soon as I can as well and it takes no time at all! My daughter puts her stuff away and I do mine...so easy! I TOTALLY wash all things together too!!! lol I also don't fold alot and hang the nice stuff!

Nice vid! With a three acre property I do a LOT of yard work and outdoor projects. I have a special set of clothes that I use for outside work but don't wash them regularly. I just throw them into a box and keep them in the garage and change into them when working. Saves on laundry and they are really not that stinky. 😂

I find if you wash everything in cold… the clothes don’t bleed colors. You can wash everything together and it is so helpful! I just do a separate load for towels and heavy jeans. Because jeans are so heavy they soak up all the water and the regular clothes don’t get as clean...

I think I shared about Dawn's system with you on one of your videos maybe a year or two ago😁. So glad you tried it! With 5 kids I have to do it every day or it would cause me significant anxiety. I attached starting a load in the wash with my shower, switching the load after supper clean up, then folding while I watch a show after my kids go to bed (my husband works nights). So habit stacking works for me, but I can definitely see an alarm being useful as well.

I’ve been doing my laundry similar to this for many years. One thing to note is you may have room to add a hanging area next to your dryer. I don’t dry most of our clothes. Rather I hang them & then put them right in the closet since my laundry set up is also in my garage.

  • @susanpeterson9947

I don’t sort by color, but I do sort by fabric weight. Lightweight clothes dry faster, heavy weight things take longer. And I do fold/hang my clothes immediately when they’re finished. It only takes a few minutes and it’s important to me that they look nice.
For me the most important thing is to keep up with it so that I don’t have to spend a whole day doing laundry.

I need to get back to a load a day! Usually my laundry day is Saturday and most of the time I don’t even get it all done.
Because of my home situation and house set up (daughter in a wheelchair so we need the hallways clear, and also my laundry stuff is in the garage), I won’t combine everyone’s things, but I can at least run towels one day, boys clothes another day, daughters clothes another day etc.
I did this before and it worked so well but I fell back into an old habit because of a life interruption before the new one was established.

I am blessed to have a laundry room next to our kitchen. I cook all our meals so it's an easy reminder. I will usually take care of starting laundry while cooking breakfast. I have a laundry sorter. It has 4 sections with a bar at the top to hang clothes. That's where I keep the extra hangers. There are no other clothes baskets in the house. Everyone brings their laundry into the laundry room and sorts it themselves. When one section is full, I wash it. Some days I'm able to skip because we don't have enough. But there is also the bedding and shower curtains I wash. I bought kid size hangers that have clips attached to them. So all my kids' clothes get hung up. Each hanger has a bottom and a matching shirt. We put underwear and socks in a drawer divider in our closets. My kids help with their clothes and the towels. I take care of mine and my husband's work uniforms.

It's just my husband and me and we use one basket! It times out perfectly for Mondays to be our wash day (4-5 small loads - sheets and towels included) and then we're done until the next week. With a family, I can see Dawn's method possibly working but I assume you still have a load for sheets and a load for towels? If you are washing every day (7 loads plus), is more water being used (cost)?? I don't know, I'm just curious. I also like knowing my wash is done; folded and put away in one day and I don't have to fuss with it until the next Monday. We also wear our clothes for two days unless we cleaning out the garage or such!! So enjoy your videos, Shannon!! God bless you and yours!

    • @shannontorrens1

Thank you Bobbie, I found even with this system I didn't have to do a load everyday because I didn't do a load unless the basket was full. I really like to do full loads because it just saves a lot of time/energy. As far as towels go I usually gather them all up once every week in a half and wash them all together (unless they get too dirty aka mud&kids). Sheets are a whole other story lol. I usually wash our sheets about every 3 weeks and I do them one load at a time because our washer really isn't great and too big of a heavy load will send it going crazy lol.

Love this! I have found that while I don't worry so much about like colors, I do pay attention to texture, so if something is ultra fuzzy and another item is a total magnet, I keep those separated, and similarly my husband's work clothes all get washed in a single load since they're too abrasive for most of my clothing :)
Thanks so much for sharing how this has worked for you!

  • @StephanieGiese
    @StephanieGiese Год назад +2

I also do a load every day now. It's been such a game changer for us! On days we don't have a lot I'll grab a blanket off the couch to fill in the load. Or run a load of just towels, or wash someone sheets, or do the dog's bedding, or the bath mats. I find it keeps the house so much cleaner because when I was just doing laundry one day a week I spent the whole day on just our clothes, I wouldn't have time to get to everyone's sheets, or the bath mats would hardly ever get washed, etc. Plus it took up an entire day where I had to be stuck at home all day. And there were a lot more "laundry emergencies" like someone needed a certain color shirt for spirit day, someone was out if clean socks, etc. That stuff doesn't happen if you do a load a day, and there are no piles around the house because it only takes like five minutes for everyone to put their own three or four clean items away. Now it's just part of the daily routine to throw a load in the washing machine, I don't even really think about it.

  • @anotherhomeschoolmom1367
    @anotherhomeschoolmom1367 Год назад +2

We started doing this recently although I didn't know it was a thing. Lol!! All the different laundry hampers and baskets were driving me crazy and in our small home, we really don't have space for everyone to have their own basket. Now all laundry goes in one basket and I throw it in the wash in the morning. I love not having a giant pile to fold and put up. Folding and putting up the laundry is the part where I have failed in the past. We might have all our clothes cleaned and dried but they didn't get put up. 🤦 Now, since it's just a small pile each day, it doesn't feel hard.
Also we wear lots of hand-me-downs and simple fabrics, everything is older and nothing overly precious, so i have no issues washing everything together. Only thing I wash separately is towels and sheets.

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  Год назад +2

I also thought it was a great feeling when I didn't have that HUGE pile to wash and fold. I was thinking I would probably just wash all our towels on one day when I didn't have enough clothes for a full load. I usually take the towels off the hook wash them and put them right back on the hook, avoids the folding =) I hope you are doing well.
