    One of the most brutal lessons I've learned since I first took up the bass in 1973, is that it's not the bass so much as the player. I encourage everyone to be able to set the neck and bridge up. That's the missing link to making a lower priced bass sound much better than its price tag suggests. Live every note, my friends.

    My guess is that Bass 1 was the Amoon and bass 2 was the Fodera... the 2nd bass sounds boomier. Don’t imagine you’d get a lot of that wooly low end out of even good J pickups, the usually tend to be growler and punchier... truth be though they both sound pretty solid!
    Edit: glad my ear is as good as I think it is, however I’m impressed with the amoon. My decision wasn’t made based on quality, but strictly sound texture. Of course, Scott is a great example of a player making the sound and not the gear.

Nowadays, just as he shows with the Ammoon, the inexpensive guitars are much better than they used to be. The difference between then and now is dramatic. Certainly in a noisy venue, with Scott playing, no one in the audience would complain about his sound on the $100 bass.

    I have to disagree, that $10000 bass looks ugly. But that's just me, at that price it should withstand a nuclear bomb, play by itself and sound as the best bass in the universe.

      Rolando Balladares It does sound the best bass in the universe and it’s marketed towards the player who plays for a living, so it playing itself would take all of the fun out of owning such an amazing instrument. • @nickchittum7548
      @nickchittum7548 6 лет назад +1

      Márk N. Mészáros That is true. But I did hear a considerable difference between the two basses. Of course an almost $10,000 gap would mean a large difference in sound but even when you get to the higher prices in basses the differences in quality are subtle but a master musician can hear and feel it.

    • @slapittywapitty8173

      Anyone hear $10,850 - worth of difference?

    • @yeoldefoxeh254
      @yeoldefoxeh254 6 лет назад +3

      @@slapittywapitty8173 nope. What I hear is mostly the pickups and perhaps the fretboard. Because of this, and the fact that as Scott also says in the video the type of electronics is completely different, this comparison video is extremely biased. It would have been a fair fight with a proper, similarly built bass which costs about a few thousand more. Still, I think we are still talking by each other. I never said that the extremely expensive bass have no different sound, I said that there is no point in spending that much (not to mention the fact that not many able to in the first place), even if you are a gigging musician because the price level is not in par with the sound it can produce. The sound of that Ammoon (£80) is obviously very different from even a £300 bass. But that £300 bass will not have that same gap with a £1200. So if you have a £1000-1200 bass properly set up, plugged in a proper gear and you have the proper technique, you can easily overplay that 11k bass. The difference is there mainly because of the way they differ, not because of their price.

      The controls are mostly for active mode. If you want to go passive, it's pretty easy to deal with. They document it as well and it's pretty straightforward, giving you treble, mid, bass controls, pickup blend, and volume/tone on knobs with cut for tuner, active/passive, and split switches (split if you've got the dual coils). Love mine and the controls really don't get in the way.

      Agreed. #2 was punchier and more responsive sound, had a more rounded (less hollow) tone, it had a better voice (clearer, less quiet). It wasn't a surprise at all. And yes, you can set up a cheap instrument well and it can be wonderful. But I do believe there is a limit to "how cheap" varies of course to the usage.Need a banger to smash during your nirvana cover band concert? cheap-o will could do well. Filling in at a professional theatre show? Cheapo needs to stay at home.

    I've had many bases over the last 40 years. My all time favorite is my Ibanez GI0 5 string paired with a 1975 Epiphone solid state amp. I picked up the pair for the princely sum of $60. The bass needed a good set up, and I replaced all the capacitors in the amp and got rid of the death cap. It's a most excellent combo and the only one I play any more.
    It's not about the dollars you spend, its about how the instrument "fits" you and how it feels to the soul when you play it.

  • @weused2bestoned

    I love that when talking about the expensive one you mention how you would need to change it to get the sound you want.. at that point it seems silly to ruin the bass by changing it and to just sell it and get something more in line with what you want. That's a lot of money to spend to then need to mod things haha you made the right choice.

    Even though you didn't show the basses, your face 100% gave it away even if I had the sound off! xD
    But daaaamm that low end is super buttery, even with the active stuff off! :O
    That cheapo one I initially went that's probably the Fodera (having never heard one without the actives on), but as soon as you started playing the second one ... a light bulb went ping .. and it was like night and day. Still not to knock the first bass, it could of had me fooled with no other context (maybe, the string rattle kind of did also give it away, but I didn't immediately notice it).

      you're ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, of course a Fodera is the dream bass, but quality/price ratio is laughable... I play the synth and it's the same with Nord synths, they are indeed very good but they cost three times more than other synths that have nothing to eny them... I guess the brand plays a huge part in this

    • @digi7altrauma792
      @digi7altrauma792 5 лет назад

      Yeah, this is a case of diminishing returns. I wouldn't pull the trigger on any bass or guitar over $800 unless I'd die without it.
      In my experience, the 300-600 range is very competitive and hard to beat. Will a $400 epiphone thunderbird bass sound as good as a $1600-$2k gibson thunderbird? Oh hell no.... But want to know what I bought and have owned happily for 15 years? The fit and feel was different, but not 1500+ different. Nor was the sound.. about a 100 bucks for new soapbars... and that difference in sound is now non existent.And when it took a head dive into the floor? No tears from me... neck was good... but it did pick up a new dent (read as character).
      But I don't think the amazon guitar would cause me to even like it. The sound is.... lackluster to say the least and I'm positive it feels as cheap as the price tag.
      $70 dollar amazon special vs a $200 squire? I gotta go with the squire all the way.
      $70 amazon guitar, vs my ~$500 Agile Legacy 727 Oceanburst.... yeah... amazon lost again.

    I think the Amoon was the first one. Did you change the nut on it? When you took it out of the box, the gap between the A and D strings was huge but then a moment later it was normal.

    I got an electric bass at Netto (before Wal Mart extinguished it) for only £70. It was in a clearance shopping cart.
    I can't fault it. The intonation is perfect and the build is sturdy. It has a nice, round bass sound, not that harsh buzz sound. Its altissimo harmonics are good, too.
    I also got a flute at Netto for £20. Again, I can't fault it.
    In case you think I would settle for just anything, I have Selmer soprano and tenor saxophones.

    On the cheapest bass, you can hear that there is a bit of 'metal' noise, a bit more at the very end of the test, don't know if thats the strings or the bass, but you can hear a noise. the sound on the Fodera is more melodic in my opinion!
    great test, not much difference between the 2, that prouve that you can have a good sound on a cheap bass, just put the right tone on your amp and good balance!
    Great video! :D

    Bass 1 had a cheaper sound to it. When playing I was able to hear a distinct sound coming from the strings vibrating on the frets, like a clank if you will, while bass 2 sounded more clear. I can't give a better explanation to what I mean with that distinct sound other than a very subtle clank, but I hope you know what I mean.

    • @achilles872
      @achilles872 4 года назад

      That's mostly down to the playing and how you have your bass set up. You can pretty much totally eliminate that by making the action on the strings higher, though many people choose not to, as when slapping, they want this percussive sound.
