What a great piece! Tom was a part of my racing spectator life from my first race in 1958 until 2012, when I retired and had to leave Indy.. I miss it all so much. Especially Tom.
Tom, was a Legend of the Brickyard in his own unique way! There were so many people that wouldn't come to watch the INDIANAPOLIS 500 it would just to be to listen to Mr. Carnegie. I always was so psyched up for 4 Days during the month of May! Those days were Opening Day of Practice, Pole Day Bump Day and of course of Race Day. I told someone on the day that he passed away that if God ever needed a someone to be a PA Announcer, it would of course has to be Tom Carnegie. He is still missed and will always be missed even to this day! RIP, Tom!
I will never forget the day when one time in front of the First Aid Bldg. just North of Gasoline Alley (now where the F-1 garages replaced history) I noticed Tom sitting on a golf cart just enjoying the day. I stopped by and just told him that in all years of my existence of hearing your voice...its a pleasure to meet you...Tom said thanks for listening and then he gave me his autograph on the back side of a suite pass ticket stub that I found on the ground during this adventure....A memory in my mind and in my scrapbook to remember....forever.."It's a new track record...!"
I watched the broadcasts of the high school basketball Final 4 many years and hearing Tom's voice was as great a treat as the games themselves. In 1985, I visited the Speedway for the time trials, and again Tom's PA calls were as memorable as the action. Tom was the finest!
I feel so fortunate to have been around the speedway back when Tom was still on the PA. In his later years, I used to remember his black rascal scooter parked outside the Pagoda. I didn't realize until earlier this year, that my favorite clip of him saying "It's a new track record", was when he was talking about Bobby Unser in 1972. My dad worked on Uncle Bobby's pit crew that year. I feel like it is the end of an era. No more Tom Carnegie. No more Florence Henderson or Jim Nabors. They tore down the old scoreboard in the short chute and replaced it with a TV screen. The scoring pylon got replaced with its own video board. I even noticed this year that Tony George giving the starting command said "Drivers" start your engines, instead of "Lady(s) and Gentleman". I miss the old days. It just isn't the same anymore.
man why do good things have to end. toms voice echoing at the speedway is so missed by so many it was one of the many traditions that made the 500 extra special i wish they were all still going on
Certainly most people remember Tom for announcing at the speedway but I go back farther than that. He also announced the IHSAA state tourney games back in the day of Crispus attucks and The Big O . Telling my age but will never forget those days as he announced the lineups and the games. Indiana fans really loved that man and what he stood for.. RIP Tom.
I have, like many, lots of memories of Tom. I was in the Channel 6 studio once to take photos of him for a magazine as he was doing the sports portion of the evening news. I photographed him at IMS and at IHSAA events, particularly basketball games. I visited with him on the porch of his home in Zionsville. I have one special memory that is meaningful to me. In December of 1996, I was at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame working on a new edition of Bob Williams book "Hoosier Hysteria!". I had covered the 500 from opening day of 1972 through the race in 1995, rarely missing a day of the Month of May. Tom also happened to be there that day and saw me. He said "Hi Mark, I didn't see you at the Speedway this year." For Tom Carnegie to have noticed I wasn't there, still means a lot to me. IMS just isn't the same without his voice coming through the speakers.
It’s so sad that pretty much all of the tradition voices and ppl are gone from the 500 :( Tom, Jim nabors, bob jenkins, Donald Davidson, Florence Henderson, Marie hulman George. All of those ppl made an impact at the speedway on me, some more than others, but it really is sad they are all gone
It’s hilarious that Bobby unser in that interview with rtv6 is wearing the same shirt he wore in the 1981 big ticket espn interview with Mario Andretti about their controversial finish at the 500

I went to qualifications almost every year as the speeds chased the 200mph mark. What a great guy !! Love you Tom !!

Tom Carnegie… The best damn public address announcer in IMS history by miles.....bar none.
God speed, Tom.
Absolute legend. You were the best, Tom.

4:20 awesome that he could be himself in a movie.
Tom and Bobby Unser down in Mexico reminds me of Daniel Suarez and Rico Abreu.
Fuji was run in reverse back then?
