"I have a most BEAUTIFUL rug from Persia...wherever that is..." That is *cracking good* understated comedy! Wonderful performance by Ms. Freeborne. Thank you Kev!
It was indeed. When I wrote it I could actually envisage Ms Freeborne in the role. I loved it when she reached for another bite of pie, that was unscripted, her own genius. Thanks for watching, I'll pass your comment on 👍🏻
@@thehistorysquad I absolutely admire the fact you still check comments of old videos. It shows how much you are dedicated to us and the channel. I have definitely found a channel that I will absolutely love
Thanks Emile, someone called us a 'community' the other day which was lovely as that's what I really feel we are. I love that people ALL over the world are watching and engaging with the history here and I do feel it's part of my job to acknowledge everyone that's taken their time to watch and comment. 👍🏻
This is such a good way to learn, so much more hands on than an old history book. Video is a gift from God, we might as well make good use of it. This is a perfect example.
I half expected this to be Kevin made up like a lady! Hahaha! I’m glad it wasn’t, I think his voice would be all wrong for the part. The lady whomever she is, did a wonderful job. Thank you for sharing this.
I absolutely 💯 love this vid! Please please more like this! I have now lurked in the shadows of youtube since almost its beginning (2005), and say our 5his Channel shall be the 1st I consciously subscribe to in all this time some 17 years ago! I find the irony in this vid and direct/indirect parallels to our own time spot on! It's almost as if the events portraided here are somehow a reverse sort of future looking glass. By looking back ate we not also looking forward, for is history the judge of us all. We steer blindly it seems like into the future only looking at the rear view mirror as our guide. If this isn't profetic and telling, not sure what is. These "current day" social problems have been, are now, and perhaps always will be with mankind. Those who do not study and apply lessons from the past are perhaps forever doomed to repeat it!! Thanks again so much!
Astonishing piece of scriptwriting and acting! ... and i must confess that this good woman who perfomed a Tudor-era lady awfully reminded of my ex-boss from college. Eeesh. This pure expectation of a chamber pot to be splashed upon your head from the second story and then to be scolded for idleness. Thank you! P.S. I understand that you have an already an awful lot on your plate to deal with, mr. Hicks, but would you be so kindly to think on a video about posh Georgian gentleman in a crazy but era-appropriate wig and ghostly pale make-up and a highly fashionable of the time beauty spot? It would be awesome to hear his opinion about new Window tax and those pesky colonials who've tossed tea into the Boston's harbour (wherever that is) and demand their representation in Parliament. Preposterous! Some people claiming that they are even considering a rebellion against our graceous king George III! Thanks again!
Interesting how the camera pans across her food, drink, and riches as she bashes the needy and disabled. Then proclaims that she shall have a bite of pie before she goes to the show spending her pennies on luxuries at said show. Bawdy indeed!!
Thankfully we don't need to consider the idea of affording Cheapside in the current day because I don't think anyone even lives there now, think it's just offices and sandwich shops or... or something.
@@JagerLange thanks for the explanation. I know so little about the UK. Canadians only get a bit of history at school and unless you travel to the UK most of what you know is theory!
The strangest thing about this video is that this lady could easily pass off as a slightly older Katie Hopkins. The sound of this lady's voice sounds similar too, and the words she's saying, well, even more similar. Elizabeth had the benefit though of being a product of her time. I have been taught about QEI up to second year degree level, I still think she's awesome. Unlike that other poor woman I mentioned. Also no offence again to the actress narrating! This was a fantastic way of giving a rough idea to people of the sort of things QEI had to deal with that isn't taught in school.
@@thehistorysquad Thank you for a reply? Is there a historical reason they wore so much makeup? Something to do with hygiene practices at the time? Pale faces considered beautiful?
@@zacksvoboda6050 pale faces were considered beautiful, but more than that the thick makeup helped to smooth the skin and cover up pock marks. Also it was lead based which of course we now know as being poisonous.
Some things never change. People were upset by the homeless. Interesting that the only help there was came from the Catholic church which Henery had abolished.
No, you'd be wrong there. Queen Elizabeth revived red lipstick's popularity with her signature look of alabaster skin with crimson lips. At this time, red lipstick was made from beeswax and red plant-based dyes, and was worn only by upper class women. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
she deserved a BAFTA for this performance, she sounded and acted as if she was really speaking from the heart and not recreating it
Haha, yes, Elaine is a great actress and a very lovely lady.
She looks like Data from Star Trek TNG
When you say SHE it looks more like Kevin in drag .

Glad you enjoyed it! 👍🏻
This is like a painting come to life. Brilliant!
my god, this was such a phenomenal video and the actress for Lady Bess was amazing!
We couldn't agree more! Elaine did a great job 👍🏻
This was fantastic! I've got to look up the cloth trade collapse, I didn't think such a needed material would suffer that.
That’s a seriously good performance, I must say
LOL.... you know it wasn't me in drag 😜
But joking aside the actress here, Elaine Freeborne, did a great job and had fun with it too. 👍🏻
@@thehistorysquad That would have made for a interesting day at the office lol. Awesome job, she really sold it.

Phenomenal. I enjoyed every second of this.
Excellent performance! Well done! 👍

Most excellent. Only the second of these first hand accounts that I have seen but I love em.
Lovely performance. Bravo to the lady.
Thanks to the actor. The cinematographer as well. This was a surprise. A very pleasant surprise.

The resemblance between hard times, economy and degenerates then and NOW is eerie... such shame.
Reminds me of some of the people who sere talking at the height of the Covid 19 pandemic etc.
Like today...history repeats
My Dear Lady could be mistaken for describing London AD 2022.
You're so right, there are lots of parallels that can be drawn 👍🏻

So history repeats itself.

Elaine Freeborn is the lovely actress who portrayed this character. 👍
What was the reason for the crazy amounts of makeup?
It's actually what was worn in the day. Call it the fashion.
