      Schluter boards much more expensive compare with hardie backer cement boards

      @@yurybadanin5035 very true but you still have to waterproof them and add alkali-resistant mesh and thin-set at all the joints - so that adds time and material

    did you all this in the same day, or did the mudbed have to dry overnight first before laying the kerdi and over top?

    For the drypack/mudbed extension, are you putting it over wet modified thinset? or dried (scratch coat). Sorry probably a stupid question.

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  2 года назад

      great question, it’s still wet modified thin-set, in this case it’s ALL-SET

    Any recommendation on how to obtain a small amount of Kerdi membrane to cover the dry pack/thinset to extend shower? Im using Keri board, so buying a whole roll of Keri band seems excessive and pricey!

    I make my entire pan out of mud also the waterproofing you put on and folded up the wall shouldn’t the wall be over that

  • @gregoriodecker2692
    @gregoriodecker2692 2 года назад +1

    Kerdi is fine but let's be real here if tile is installed correctly it's not necessary. I just took out my 28 year old shower with only green board behind it and it was still adhered and no water damage .. not putting your walls onto the Pan .. leaving a gap is the most critical . That and keeping your corners caulked well at all times! My newest discovery is never seal grout.. game over! Expensive but..soooooooo worth it

    What is the name of that membrane?

  • @MichaelM-to4sg
    @MichaelM-to4sg 2 года назад

    Now you have a dual density pan. There will a fracture at that joint. Might mitigate problem w/decoupling membrane like Ditra but even that will likely have a crack in a few years. Professionals spend the additional hour to float an entire pan and use fat mud to float walls square while you’re at it

      Yes, if properly waterproofed by extending KERDI two inches beyond the dry pack

  • @dorinb4085

    What’s the name of that level you were using?

    • @MichaelM-to4sg
      @MichaelM-to4sg 2 года назад

      Screed level.
      Far better to use 4x3x 1/4 aluminium angle bar and a separate quality level such as Stabila. Screed always get dirty, easier to discard after every job since aluminium angle bar is cheap and plentiful while quality accurate levels are expensive. Just use level for its intended purpose, to define level.

    I find it hilarious that Schluter actually said overlapping Kerdi 2 inches, bonding with thinset is waterproof. Thinset is not waterproof. Been disproven time and time again.

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  2 года назад +8

      thin-set itself isn’t waterproof, that’s correct. However, when you combine thin-set and fleece, that’s waterproof because the crystals of the thin-set anchor into the fleece. As more crystals grow in that confined space - between two fleece layers - they physically create a barrier and prevent water penetration. Knowing the details and understanding the principles helps the installer build a waterproof shower

    • @MichaelM-to4sg
      @MichaelM-to4sg 2 года назад +1

      Correct. Hence why we in US had several issues w/Kerdi when it first arrived. Schluter fid not import their thinset, recommended unmodified thinset. We tested and learned fast to overlap 3-4”. We tried Ardex 8+9 to bond Kerdi membrane. The latter worked great but voided the Schluter warranty. We began using mostly Hydroban because their Multimax is highly modified thinset that is largely waterproof by itself due to additives and when combined w/Hydroban membrane has shown to be entirely waterproof. Because our homes are usually built with at least 1 and often 2 steam showers, waterproof membranes are the only viable and reliable option.
      Within last few years Schluter US finally began importing their own thinset, their AllSet is a waterproof modified thinset. Due to supply chain issues, we now use Kerdi more often than Hydroban. The only time we demand Hydroban is when heated floor systems are installed due to the Laticrete version bring much more reliable than Schluter’s Ditra cable and controller. As long as you’re using the membrane manufacturers required modified thinset, properly installed, these systems are waterproof in most any commercial or residential application

    Never never use thinset as a sealer. It does not work. It will fail. Kerdi Is currently getting sued by multiple contractors for not honoring. They're so called warranty that does not really exist
