Can you use a G1 (HTC Dream) in 2019?

- After unearthing my original G1 from a junk drawer I got to thinking, is it possible to use this phone in this current day and age? Has technology really gone so far in the past 10 years...
I loved this phone so much. It was my first phone when I joined the Navy. Only problem I had with it was the battery life was god awful. Still, one of the most fun phones I’ve ever owned.
Never had any HTC phone yet I watched this video in 2019. Work of art.
This phone was way ahead of its time...and it easily trumps the sidekick..I really wish T-mobile would have released a limited edition retro remake of the phone but with modern technology built in..the slide out keyboard was innovative and it worked like a charm rather than a gimmick...you could of text your messages to the receiver faster with the physical keyboard than u would if you used the virtual keyboard...I really missed that feature about the phone it’s the most important to me.
wooahh! One of my favorite phones of all time. Loved using this thing- last physical board I had. The nub control on it was great too.
Man I miss my G1. I got it in 2009 when it first came out. I've been with Android since day 1. I'm on the Galaxy S9 now.
Same, I got the G1 after I busted my Motorola V3i, I never left Android since! I'm on a OnePlus 7 Pro these days, I had a 5 before.

I am watching this on a HTC dream and I would really recommend buying one
I just got one for my collection along with an original iPhone 2G. It's an awesome device, the physical keyboard and trackball make it so much more interesting than other old phones. I also have an HTC Magic, the second ever android phone. It doesn't have the Keyboard, but a trackball as well. But unfortunatly that phone has stopped working completely.
I had one of these and adored it, it lasted me a decent while for the period it was released in.
Modern websites are way too ad heavy and data intensive for the browser (and memory in the phone) to cope with.
I'd buy a modern remake in an instant.
A modern version of this would be amazing, or better yet, give me a modern high end Sidekick!

I had this phone in white. Traded my first gen iPhone 2G 4gb for it. Loved it. Had it until I upgraded to the HTC hero in '09, then the Evo 4g. I loved HTC.
Man crazy I had the first smart phone didn't really realize the importance this phone was . Before the hype train. Another phone I miss is the sidekicks
I believe this phone was the response to the release of the iPhone, but it still counts as the first Android phone

You can use a G1 in 2019/20/21/22/23 as long as you only use it for calling. Unfortunately Google changed the security for apps like Gmail and Market in 2018 if I remember correctly, which means that nothing older than Android 4.4 could any longer connect to those services. It's basically not the phone's fault, it's Google's. You should however b e able to use other app stores on the phone as well as use POP or IMAP for a third party mail client to get Gmail running, although why anyone still uses Gmail alludes me.
I was thinking it would be cool to have another one after dropping it in front of me while running I kicked it ahead of me straight into the wall who knows how many years ago. Thank you for satisfying my curiosity

Watching this video and reading a few comments reminds me of how old i am...i my early 20's I was issued a beeper when I was on alert...it was like hanging a swingline stapler on my BDU's...i thought i was cool. Lol

HTC phone use to be the shiz back in the day. HTC Dream G1, the first android phone. HTC evo, the first 3D phone that took 3D pics with built in kick stand. HTC HD2, the first 4.3 inch largest screen. HTC One, the first phone with Bose speakers. HTC use to have the best phones. IPhone were good but only available on the AT&T network at the time with a premium price and service plan and no phone warranty. Then Samsung started to blow up with the galaxy series
HTC used to be the best, I had many HTC phones back in the day including the hd2, one of my favorites!
J-Tech Workshop me too. All the ones I listed plus the HTC sensation. Some had the aluminum back that was indestructible. After the HTC 1. I switched to Samsung Notes . Now I have my first IPhone the 8+ with 256 GB. I have really enjoyed seeing the progress with phones. My 1st phone was a Nokia 3310 GSM with black & white screen & snake game 🤣

Okay sir so unfortunately the g1 is not the first real Android because the real first Android was the HTC Evo in 2010 but the g1 was a great first attempt. Also any Android with 4.0 exactly not 4.0.1 is the most rearest Android.

In 2010 we already had Adroid 2.2 on the first Samsung Galaxy S, the Motorola Milestone and a ton of other Android flagships by LG, Sony, HTC and many more. In fact the widely popular Android 2.3 was released in December of 2010.
@@Tom2404 Yes I know that Android 2.3 was insane for 2010 but Android 4.0 was the price and hardware point that Android a realistic replacement for a laptop for home business selling on ebay/Amazon.
So Android 4 was the first Android? You can't qualify the word "first" just because it didn't have the features you consider to be the "real" Android.
