I've worked for Lego for near a decade, and there are very few original themes anymore. Much of what they sell are licensed sets, because they do sell better then their original lines, but even their original sets are aimed at adults to hit them with nostalgia. Lego's lost a lot of their originality and creativity, and have tried very hard to sell as much as possible by whatever means.

Never really understood the appeal of the licensed models. You're just following instructions and once you're done with it, that's basically it. They look cool if you're going to display them but otherwise pointless to me. Lego was all about creativity, building whatever you could think of. It's like playing Minecraft and being told exactly where to place every block

I feel like the quality of Lego movies might also be a case of the first feature-length film in 2014 being so unique. I really can’t think of another animated movie that was ever anything like it. It had a mix of great humor that appealed to different ages, a new animation style, characters you really could care about, and an engaging story with a really deep emotional message. I honestly haven’t even wanted to watch any of the sequels after it out of fear of the first one being ruined for me. They may have legitimately just created something so good that they set the bar way too high even for themselves.

In my opinion, the reason why the LEGO Movie worked so well was because of their decision to anchor it in reality with making the characters move like the toys, and making everything, and I mean everything, out of LEGO, from water to even the clouds, and then referencing all the classic themes and everything everyone loves about LEGO. It was a love letter to all things LEGO. The LEGO Batman movie wasn't nearly as successful because not everyone who's a LEGO fan is necessarily a Batman fan, but it was just as excellent as the original in my opinion. What brought down the LEGO Ninjago movie for me was it's lack of connection to the show, it was like the show was completely ignored while making the movie, and then the lack of LEGO making up everything brought it down further, the water was just water, the plants were just plants, so it was overall less than what people expected from it. It could have been just as good as the previous two, but they were srarting to slip away from what made the first two so good. The official sequel, while not bad, didn't feel as much of a love letter to all things LEGO, the fact that the themes aren't very apparent here, and it feel more like a commercial selling products than even the first movie. They're all still fun, just not as good as the original.

Lego's problem is overpriced sets with declining quality (colour problems among other things). Licences shouldn't make sets mkre expensive. You obtain a license so you sell more than without. That never should make sets mkre expensive. And they need more prints, less stickers.
The main point is: their main target audience these days is adults, while they totally neglect children. That might show in a decade or so.

Licensed sets are always more expensive because the original license holder gets a share of the profits. So Lego compensates but making the set more expensive so their own company can get a higher profit.

I love Lego and I always will. I do wish they went back to some of their original themes once in a while. As a huge fan of the first Lego Racers, I love those characters and themes in there. Regardless I still love the licensed Lego sets as well. If I had more money, I would buy and build sets every week and I still want a big Lego room with a full on city and all that even now as an adult.

  • @Obi-Wan_Kenobi
    @Obi-Wan_Kenobi Год назад +3

I don't buy the argument this video is making. It's claiming media has become oversaturated with Lego content and said Lego content isn't garnering a big audience anymore. But that's just not true. Most of the Lego content isn't directed at adults, it's directed at kids. Those kids eventually age out but there's always a new generation of kids who will replace them because they are now seeing Lego content for the first time.
This is evidence across the boards, all of Lego's shows and games are successful because they keep targeting the kids demographic, a demographic that will never disappear because new kids grow up to replace the kids who aged out. Lego wouldn't keep making this Lego content if it wasn't profitable. They have realized Lego games for almost 20 years, they have been running Lego tv shows for 15 years. The are have to be successful otherwise Lego would have stopped making them.
The cold hard fact is that these media endeavors are profitable and they are benefiting Lego's bottom line. Lego's yearly financial reports has been going up the entire time they were releasing Lego media as the media boosts toy sales. Lego's best sales were correlated with the years their films released or licensed IP films came out, you can see this in their financial reports.
You can make an argument that Lego itself is becoming less creative with an over reliance on IPs that's doesn't really impact their bottom line. Also, such an argument blatnatnly ignores how a huge portion of Lego's most successful themes are original. Ninjago, City, Friends, Monkie Kid are some of Lego's more profitable themes (sometimes even outperforming Star Wars and Marvel) and they are wholly original and have been popular for 13, 25, 12, and 5 years respectively.
And that's to say nothing of the quality of these original themes. They are creative and original not just in their sets but also in their media. But this video just glossed over the tv shows of each of these original theme without critiquing them. It just dismisses them with an implication that the shows are shallow and unoriginal when frankly, they are anything but. As someone who actually watches these shows, many of them are quite good, dare I say excellent. They are not all amazing, but these is always going to be a variance of quality when you're looking at such a huge sample size. But the point is that I'm not writing them off with a blanket statement of the shows all being meh as this video does.
In conclusion, I really don't understand the point of this video. Is it trying to say Lego is more uonoringal now? Well sure, there are defiantly more licensed IPs than original IPs but that is literally because Lego was going bankrupt until themes like Star Wars and Harry Potter stablized them. Having licensed themes is a necessary evil for the company to exist and even that's putting it way too harshly. So many people love Lego Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc because they put out great sets and good media.
Is the video then saying that Lego is oversaturated with media and audiences aren't interested anymore? Well that's not true because Lego has never been for mainstream adults, it's always been for kids. Yeah, adults don't care about the new Lego tv show but it's never been for them, it's for kids who do like the shows and keep watching which is why Lego keeps making new shows and why the Lego sets associated with the show keeps selling. The one exception to this was the Lego Movie series which steadily became less profitable but you can't make blanket statements about ALL Lego media from 4 films there are over 20 Lego games and 10 Lego tv shows that have been successful.
So none of the points in this video have any merits because none are supported by children audience viewership, Lego's financial reports, and even the quality of Lego's media endeavors. To be blunt, it feels like this is a video about nothing it's entirely based on assertions and assumptions with little to no evidence to back up any of its claims.

Another example of flooding the market were the Lego games with the customisable dice that came out in 2009. They pumped out 10 games per year, on or two decent and the rest mediocre at best. Within a few years the theme had died. Had they focused on two or three good games per year, it could have gone on much longer.

LEGO will always be relevant. I don't understand why it seems like they are always trying to "stay ahead of the curve". I agree that it might be worth considering slowing down and focusing on quality vs quantity. There is a clear oversaturation even with the minifigures. They have no issue making new prints and molds for very niche characters. For example, how often will someone need an "apocalypse-themed coffee vendor", a "guy in a chicken costume", or a "golden collectible anniversary minifigure"? Don't get me wrong, these minifigures are awesome, lol. But I think it gets the point across - LEGO doesn't need to be constantly innovating to stay relevant.

This is something I never really thought about before, but if I have a word to say, than my problem with LEGO nowadays is largely because of the change of plans regarding their studio.
Like Hasbro, LEGO is trying to turn themselves into a entertainment company, instead of just being a toy company. Unfortunately, a lot of their shows and games have gone downhill, and there’s less people buying LEGO sets as when toys are mostly collected by adults rather than kids.
Ironically, the only thing that kept LEGO going wasn’t just the games, it was the people who loved collecting LEGO Sets, they made stop motion brick films out of it.
I don’t really think LEGO went downhill once they made licensed themes (As, a lot of people including myself who grew up LEGO, have been more interested in the licensed themes and most of the original themes throughout the 2000s and 2010s.). I also don’t think it’s because the LEGO Movie ruined LEGO (For how awesome that movie was, I feel like LEGO took the wrong lessons from that movie and just tried to make everything similar to the LEGO Movies, but failed.). No, I just think the problem is that Toy Companies aren’t the same as they used to be. We as a society had largely grew up with these toy lines, and we eventually grew out of kids toys once we’re adults. It’s only with our love & nostalgia that Toy Companies are willing to make toys for adults (For both Nostalgia’s sake, and love & appreciation for the original toyline). And honestly, at this point LEGO is slowly trying to cater towards Adults here. And I don’t blame LEGO for this, I feel like we’re the ones responsible for it.
But honestly I’m not good at making these comments, so i don’t think you guys should get mad at me when I’m trying my best to explain this.

I just started working for Lego and I worked for a film studio. Here's my take:
As long as there's money coming in, market saturation is not on anyone's minds. I don't think Lego is harming themselves by having so much content, but they might not be helping themselves either.
In the new age of content creation, video and movies are huge. More content = more opportunities to watch = more market share in people's minds. If they arent making movies, it's other toy companies like Barbie. Then, Hasbro steps in with the Monopoly movie, the Nerf movie or worse for Lego, the Mega Blocks movie. Lego beat their competitors to the screen.
It's business, not art - and they've shown no signs of stopping. As long as customers walk in asking for licensed sets we will keep stocking them.

I think in the long run lego and other brands who sideline childern to appeal to adults will fall in the long term. Whenever you do not care about future customers and only care about your current you will vanishes. Might take some time but the childern of today won't have so much nostalgia for lego as the adults who are now in their 30-40ies. And therefore will neither care to buy that stuff for themselves nor for their childern.

You are fully in control of not engaging everything or being annoyed by their being so much content you can't possibly consume it all . . . leading back to why try consuming it all? Too many westerns, too many super heroes, too many apps . . how about . . I got what I needed and stepped away from the table without gourging nor having complaint?

I'd say it depends to be honest.
I treat something like LEGO similar to Civilisation DLC; they don't intend everyone to watch / play everything.
It feels more like they're trying to appeal to many people by making several specific properties targeting a wider audience rather than making fewer generic properties that might appeal to less people.
And to me at least, I think that's why the LEGO Batman movie did better than either the LEGO Movie 2 or LEGO Ninjago movie; because people recognised the characters in it, and it was an interesting spin on something they already knew.
So a cinematic LEGO Avengers movie or LEGO Star Wars movie might do better as one offs branching out from their appearances in the other cinematic LEGO movies, rather than trying to establish a new IP for multiple movies that can only go so far with the theming.
As for the games, it didn't help that TT Games had the exclusive rights for around 2 decades.
The newer games coming out made by other developers have been a breath of fresh air, even when some are simple point and click adventure games.
A friend said the Skywalker Saga felt like TT Games attempt to get the exclusivity back after sticking to the same formula for so long, and I kinda agree with them.

They are pushing out too much stuff. One of the first things I noticed was way too many Lego games. A few are good but they did kinda play the exact same just with a different IP. There isn’t much difference to Lego Jurassic park game compared to The incredible if you strip away the dinosaurs and superheroes. They play the same. Go from here to there, smash things, collect studs to open up characters, get gold bricks, find red bricks to unlock different modes etc. it would be great with the building sets for them to release some of their own stuff, even hark back to old sets and redo them. Such as a set I remember having as a kid, can’t remember the lines name but it was something to do with robot aliens. Not bionicle it was before then.

It's only over-saturation if you're of the opinion that, as a fan of Lego (or, indeed, _any_ IP) you are obligated to consume it. I'm in my late 40s, I love Lego, I've loved three of the four Lego films (Ninjago was so unabashedly meh for me) but the list of shows you mentioned in this video were all new to me. They're aimed at kids and so fall squarely in the same space as how I would react upon seeing the straight to DVD movies I'd see at Target: "Huh. They made that? Neat." You might as well complain that DK Publishing is putting out too many Lego books.
So if and when there's another Lego movie, I'm certainly game to consider it as it arrives. If it's on par with the Lego Movie or Barbie, sure! If it's a cynical cash grab, I'll give it a pass.
Fandom is remarkably simple when you give yourself permission to be choosy.

In my humble opinion, Lego has simply become too over-licensed, lacking in series of its own that will continue over time and, above all, too expensive.
the licensed ones (Marvel, DC, Star Wars, etc.) take up space in the catalog with sets that are often overpriced, especially for what they offer... and, more generally, I don't think there is much room for maneuver anymore for medium-low buyers. in short, if Lego produced a space line with small, medium and large sets, given the lack of branding, it would be a good alternative for customers, instead of the iconic but expensive SW ships.
but let's also think about the modern potential of lines (and not one-off and very expensive celebratory sets) classic, cone castle, space, western...
