The only reason sellers put timegating is to let FOMO do the sale instead of putting in values for their products.
FOMO is the quickest way for me to nix a product and or company off my list. Why I stopped playing MTG for example.
Not the only reason. Economies of scale is another. It’s much cheaper to make a lot of something at once than it is to make a few of that same thing. The equipment has to be calibrated and materials set up to build the thing, and it’s time consuming and expensive to do it over and over as orders come in. All of Kurzgesagt’s timed products are preorders, so they’re getting the number required ahead of time so they can ask for that number to be made from the factory. That way they can charge the consumer less for the product and still be able to make the thing they want to make.
That said, it’s definitely leveraging FOMO with the emphasis on ‘never again’ on a lot of these. I wish they’d just cut that out and start bringing back old merch occasionally. Reruns are nice.

Like, what if they say they have already made 3000 pins, which will no longer be available after sold out, is it still a FOMO scheme?
What if instead of 24 or 72 hours, a creator decides to sell a different new pin each year. It’s still a FOMO scheme, right?
They advertise these pins as "get them all" collectible, but if you missed one (I missed first) then there's absolutely no reason to get any of them.

Why don't you have an actual photo of the Determinator 3000 in the video or on your website?? The photoshop mock-ups are not enough to gauge what this thing will look like in your hand or on a denim lapel.
My bet: they don't have the actual finished product yet probably and only prototypes, hoping the first sales will pay for manufacturing costs. It is a "preorder".
Edit: also enamel pins, especially with moving parts. Are expensive and complicated to make, so this way they can more easily match demand without the risk of over or underproducing stock.
I have all pins of the red color collection (their previous pin series) and each one of them is super high quality. I am sure this one will be too. The first pin in the previous series also had a spinning wheel to decide the fate of the universe, just like this one.
@@PeppoMusic yes, I understand that is usually the case, in part to watching other creator's, like LTT, journey with making products. SURELY they have 1 final product in their hands. Or a prototype that's 'finalized' enough for them to say 'yes, this is what we're going to sell 20k units of, and ship for free.' Sending product photos to team members in different regions is a breeze these days.
It's not a big deal and I will still likely purchase one to support creators I like. Just a little apprehensive at first when buying something sight unseen AND without real photos of it. Have to temper expectations either before buying it or after receiving it.

Kürzgesagt really should put a disclaimer that the video notification is an ad and not a full length video. I bet you ALL of those dislikes would vanish if they did. Most people see the notification and get excited, before getting the realisation that it's an advert for merch.

it is sad that the market pushes for items targeted at less intelligent or gullible people, for instance scams. Because they are more likely to be purchased. Since intelligent people think before they purchase things, thus they buy fewer items. This causes a chasm between items that are useful and items that are made to trick people which have a harder time staying on the market. It almost seems like, if you are not able to make the most useful item, then you need to add marketing to trick people into buying your product instead of the better one. It would be great if price was actually reflective of quality, but that would require infrastructure that is either too complicated to setup right away, or too oppressive for a positive economy.
