Mhm, but at the same time it was done very poorly in terms of EDM as the synth was too detached from the rest of rhythm, it did its job at trying to be jarring at the expense of being more unpleasant to listen to outside of context. It was also very balanced all across the track which at the point it came meant there wasn't really a peak thus being mellow all throughout which for a boss theme where the centre of attention is on a single greater threat meant that it sort of lost its meaning as a 'boss theme'.
Yeah and yet, I've defended the song many, many times before but It just sounds kinda... meh. I think the build up right before was just so god damn good. I wished they would have continued there.

It's important to remember that genshin OSTs all of them are context-oriented. So far hard EDM only used to depict otherworldly power. When you think like that, the EDM in arle and narwhal boss theme actually make sense, and the theme, while maybe not for everyone's ears, becomes interesting and logical. Moreover the unexplained curse that arle has (i haven't play her story quest yet, sorry) and her glitching idle actually makes sense if depicted with EDM.
The cello also represents Khaenriah. If you haven't heard her Pierro voice line, she mentions that he told her her powers come from a Khaenriahn dynasty. She also doesn't appear to be Fontanian gameplay-wise, so...
Personally I really felt a lot of the horror elements from this theme more than anything else we've heard from this game. Parts of the composition feel like it even borrows from classic horror films, sooo much of the instrumentation and choir is completely harrowing, and even the EDM section was like this grand revealing of this creeping, grotesque, and powerful monstrosity coming to get you. Horror-based music and themes are some of my favourites so I have a lot of appreciation for them.
I wonder if you have seen Arlecchino's kit or not, but her elemental burst is the reason why i like that electronic part. Every time i listen to that part of the theme her it comes to mind. Her putting the finder to her lips, commanding the orchestra to quiet down, then snapping her fingers as the silence is broken by HEAVY EDM the crimson moon rises and reality starts to glitch. It's jarring but in a good way. Like a well earned jumpscare
i personally don't need for every genshin boss theme to sound "epic" and like we're fighting a god, because in this case we're not, arlecchino is a character who is NOT emotionally driven like La signora who is a very tragic character, who can't get over her past and her only goal is to destroy the gods who took away her lover,meanwhile arlecchino accepts her past and looks more towards the future,she is composed, she knows exactly who she is and what she wants, not to mention that this wasn't a fight to death but just arlecchino playing around and showing what she is capable of
I feel like they put the EDM here due to the glitching effect of Arle in her idle, they used EDM because she is a "very different" being, like her origin and curse. The glitch in her idle represents that she is not in this world, thats just my speculation why they used EDM in here.
@@silis_pap8473 That was the point. It was meant to be uncomfortable and out of sync. They even used the distorted sounds of a spiders web being plucked. Also there was a buildup in the vocals before it it was just a genre shift on drop.
why are people slamming on the edm so hard? scaramouche's boss theme not only did edm sections, it had straight up drumstep with oriental trap sections all over the place and it sounded amazing, in here its just for like 30 seconds to cap off everything else that came before and it does its job splendidly with the beat progression, if it were gone this theme would be really forgettable bc it'd just be pure buildup to absolutely nothing and again, it's been done before several times to critical acclaim
Scara is a mecha,both inside and outside.ypc went on full edm which makes sense, but abyss? I'd probably pick childe phase 3 by yu peng chen,which depicted abyss the best.
A lot comes down to misunderstanding. They specifically used sounds in the EDM settings to express the otherworldly curse and the sounds of a distorted spiders web (which she represents)
The issue isn’t EDM existing in the song at all. The main problem is the fact that it wasn’t executed and implemented into the song as well as Scara or the Narwhal did, at least in a lot of people’s opinion.
@@hammer-draws2323 it was implemented just as well. But it was implemented in a way to invoke a specific feeling. It was meant to be uncomfortable and seem unnatural it even had proper buildup and set up it just did so in the form of a buildup in a different genre.
Another reason as to why it wasn't as great as the other Harbinger themes,is mainly because they fought tooth and nail and went full power just to stand a chance against the traveler,symbolising their true power, while Arlecchino was toying with the traveller and never went all out. Besides this its still a Great theme for me,and its Up there,Genshin never misses with the Bangers
I imagine that, if we fight her again (maybe phase 3?) the music will really pick up and get extreme, if we're strong enough to force her to fight all out.
I think people forget, maybe the use of EDM is bad to all this pro but I love it and its not often use but use in tandem with who is who when in Genshin everything is thematic, from the Harbinger music being dark and evil a level of chill like mostly used with a opera singer with a lower tone. To tevyat music orchestra-traditional instrument signature Then you would understand they use more EDM for being outside of tevyat, not belonging to the world ie, narwal, and her cursed power hence why all her PV when she goes into pure red blood it will have that edm. maybe it does not suit well for other but tto me them combining both is so lore accurate can they do better maybe from the POV of musicians but IMO its very nice to hear Like HSR and all use all this music EDM etc for the sake of hyping a char but to me Genshin till now uses it music to potray a story and a character.
For me I thought it was fascinating. I felt it was two different characters Arlecchino/Knave. In how it was structured. You can feel the descent so I welcome your opinion.
Arlecchino is probably a descendent of the Khaenri'ah's eldest dynasty, the "Crimson Moon" Dynasty, so this is otherworldly/Abyss in style. Though there's still way too much mystery surrounding that dynasty, so the unsettling tempo is very deliberate in trying to make you feel like she's not actually from Teyvat normally, but quite literally a Khaenri'ah heiress similar to Kaeya is related to the Eclypse dynasty (the one that came after "Crimson Moon"). It's hard to listen to out of context of without knowing her possible lineage.
I’m so torn on how I feel about the EDM section of this OST. On one hand I love the context of it and what it represents for her Arlecchino’s character as well as the curse branded on her, but at the same time I really don’t like the heavy-handedness of it. Yes it’s overpowering, yes it’s intense, and yea that’s the point, but I just wish it was blended more with the classical elements that were used everywhere else in the piece. Hoyo-Mix has done it masterfully in the past, but it kinda fell off here. Still a great boss theme all round tho. The start of the 2nd phase up to that section was so good

My short comment might contain spoiler The song feels like its incomplete or doesnt feel epic as scaramouche/tartaglia music because Arlecchino didnt use her full power as lyney mentioned in the story, so that might be the reason. Maybe the music just want to introduce or represent the vibe of her from the children of the house's pov instead?
Its not a bad theme, its just that it doesnt really have that big of a explosion part and it isnt as unic as scara’s, la signora’s or raiden. Personally, if they added another EDM part or made it longer it would have been more unic. This problem I also have with the whale boss, the electronic part is so cool but so short 😭
Funfact: actually the main voice on the second phase is a Contralto(I don't care if the last clip on the official channel says that its a mezzo-soprano, my experience in choirs just screams contralto to me)

Arlecchino is literally playing with us in her battle and that lack of emotion in her story,theme and in her "character" itself is what makes people hate her theme,compared to scara or childe,who's boss themes are extremely emotional. But again,I'd beg to differ that ypc potrayed abyss better.
The moment the snap came in, that was Arlecchino taking complete control of the battle. THIS is her power at its peak and she’s letting us witness it. Her curse/bloodline is a remnant of the Khaenriah Crimson Moon Dynasty. Everyone’s already explained any power that comes from outside of Teyvat the music representation shows it. I feel like the consensus of EDM is it’s basically a cheap alternative that lacks soul and I get that. Contextually tho it just makes sense story/lore wise …. something I feel you, Marco and a lot of other musically inclined people just don’t click with b/c you don’t have time/aren’t rly interested in the lore with both this and HSR.
I personally don't find it very problematic with the EDM stuff near the end. I think the theme overall sounds good and it fits her character. HOWEVER. There are small things I wished they implemented into the boss theme. I personally think this boss theme in specific suffers from the lack of a particular theme that I think should've been obvious: the theme from her recently released Short Animation: Emberfire. Video game music very frequently uses and reuses melodies as a sort of symbol. For example: the Main Theme of Octopath Traveler. They arranged it differently for the second game but they stuck with the same general idea for two games now. They may have two games out now, but they kept the main melody the same because it's what Octopath Traveler theme is. The instant you listen to it, you immediately recognize that it's the theme of the Octopath Traveler series. That theme serves as the musical identity of the series. The same concept can be applied to even area themes and battle themes as can be seen throughout the majority of Genshin Impact. As a matter of fact, Genshin does the same thing with Childe's, Signora's, Scaramouche's and now Arlecchino's boss themes. They all include the theme of the Fatui Harbingers. You'd think that does the job already but imho that doesn't do enough for this specific case. They've decided to release an animated short regarding Arlecchino's past with a dedicated song to go with it. It's more than safe to say that that song can be considered Arlecchino's theme. The fact that they didn't include a variation of said theme in her boss theme really doesn't sit well in my mind. Some may think that "that song doesn't fit the boss theme" and they may have been correct. However, using musical motifs doesn't mean you use the same exact theme over and over again. You can alter that theme to suit whatever situation the scene presents as long as it keeps the general idea. You can play the theme in a minor key, for instance.
Noo how can people call this the worst boss battle theme 😭 I've been listening to it for days now and it slaps so hard. I guess the EDM part isn't for everyone and I must admit that I had to get used to it too. But I personally really enjoy listening to this track now. 😌
Look I understand the context behind this music but they could've executed it better... I'm talking about the composition, structure, how they blend the instruments together... and especially the EDM part. I'm not saying this is a bad theme, but I kinda expected more from HOYO-MIX. I am gonna speak my mind here. I have been playing genshin for 2 years now and I have been hoonked up with it's beautiful tracks but this is respectfully nah for me! I love edms, rock, orchestra but somehow this one just doesn't blend well together (atleast for me). Out of all the harbinger's battle themes, Signora and scaramouche is the best for me! It's just what I think.😄
I don't understand music too much, but I give this theme boss a good rating. I think most of the song is talking about The Knave, talking about the children's "Father", only after the snapping sound in phase 2, when the EDM is played, is it really talking about Arlec himself- who is being consumed by the curse outside Teyvat. During Arlec's mission battle, she suddenly brought us to witness a territory with a blood moon that did not belong to Teyvat, so I think the EDM part also suddenly appeared.
I understand where you're coming from, I also wasn't the biggest fan of that section, but it does fit with Arlecchino's lore. I think it's ok to express when you didn't like something, music is always subjective and we all have different opinions on it.
I think the edm or dubstep represent being a person or entity is synthetic or not supposed to the world of teyvat. That's what i thought and it actually gives story i guess. And you need to do the story quest haha
I mean you're not too wrong about the music. I like all of it because it's fucken cool and it really fits Arlecchino's macabre style, but from the perspective of someone classically trained, it's kinda simple and the electronic section is just there as a filler. It doesn't really make sense from the perspective of the lore either because Peruere is Khaenrei'ahn, not Abyssal. She might be a super distant descendant of an otherworlder, but her bloodline is so diluted by this point that she might as well be a native. None of her story is actually focused on her origins either, so it isn't something that should take center stage as a coda for her music. It was a strange choice to include that last section and the most reasonable explanation for it is that it's just filler. 9/10 would listen to this music while doing anything.
8/10 for me. However its so weird hearing people talk about using EDM for otherworldly things forgetting the whole curse thing and her arm having connections to the abyss. Also strange using it as a critique when you were enjoying the EDM in the other trailers involving her, but now it doesnt fit? If we have an issue with EDM here, we need to have an issue with trap beats in La Signora's theme as that makes even less sense.
If you watched his thoughts near the end of video, you would have noticed that he doesn’t have a problem with EDM itself, just the way it was presented in this track. He even listed several other tracks where he says he enjoys the EDM such as raiden’s and the all devouring narwhal.
Yeah I kinda agree. I get that EDM is kinda the thing for otherworldly beings in Genshin, but it felt so out of place there, there wasn't any particular build-up. Everything up to the EDM was perfect
I must say, I'm not a fan of digital instrumentation, but hoyo mix somehow managed to consistently make it work A LOT for my austistic sound sensitive ears. The snap moment just threw me on the ground in a good way and honestly, I think the EDM after that fits very well with the aspects involving her powers that don't belong to this world and her bizarre way to maintain some level of secrecy about it(and everything else). Its dissonant, in arrangment and in sound aesthetic. In a game design standpoint, this is just amazing.
Thank you for your honest opinion about this boss OST. I myself really enjoyed everything about the soundtrack except the EDM part at the end, and I'm glad people like you or MarcoMeatball have the same view on it as well. And I know, I know.. The EDM represents her connections to otherworldly / Abyss stuff blah blah blah. Yeah, I get it. The fact that they used EDM isn't the problem but the way how they used EDM annoys me. It just sounds so out of place.
Definitely not my least favourite of all the boss themes, but my least favourite from the fatui boss themes I guess. Personally I would put Apep, Dvalin and Narwhal below this one. Narwhal is very close, I just prefer some elements of this Arlecchino theme. Dvalin is amazing, it's just that I can't see myself putting his theme above this one. Apep is the only one I kinda dislike. To me there's nothing that makes it really stand out as a boss theme. The Sumeru overworld battle themes feel more intense than Apep's theme. Which wouldn't be a problem if it would fit thematically but.... I also don't really feel that. There's nothing that really tells me anything about Apep in Apep's theme, it just feels like a overworld battle theme to me.
Tldr for yall: the problem isnt that edm is there, the problem is that its done REALLY bad by Hoyo standards, that it became too jarring. They pulled edm well before, but here its ASS
he is right tho... after Polumnia-Omnia... tracks begin to be worse... Polumnia-Omnia and Raiden boss theme are like the top of Genshin boss music. God-Devouring Mania was... alright... but like... All Devouring Narwhal is... Meh... And this is like... worse version of Saltatio Favillae. About the "negative opinions not allowed", I can't count how many times people are unwilling to criticize Genshin's music. Personally, I also thought this boss theme was 'mid'. I've been reading comments, and they mostly agree that the whole track fits in context/with the narrative, and I think that's fine. I don't like the 2nd phase, I've tried to make it grow on me, but I can't feel what the majority feels for it. Personally, I find the snap/beat drop a but...'cringy'.
The Whale boss fight had full electronic music becasue the boss was somethign out of this world, Arlecchino has that music change because there is something else going on with her. You might not like it but it fits how symbolic Genshin music is. Remember, she is a character that glitches when you don't move.

As for the EDM part of the song, I myself also had mixed feelings at first, and I think a good way to describe it is 'jarring', in the context of the rest of the song. But I think it's a good representation of Arlecchino, as she is a jarring character herself. So the theme definitely suits her.
To be honest composition-wise, even I as a non-musician (who do hear this piece first using headphone, btw) can tell that the composition is pretty godly and there are a ton fck of things happening especially in that dubstep section. The only question now is whether it sounds good or not. Does it fit the theme they have been doing regarding when to use more electronic sound? Yes, for sure, absolutely. Does it fit the theme of the character and her general aesthetic? Yes, definitely, too. Does it sound good, tho? Well... depends. But usually Genshin music is highly rated, especially the boss musics (and even in Fontaine after the departure of YPC). Hell, let's compare it to Ei final boss bgm. It's not as complicated as this one, but still a mix of Japanese traditional music instrument and electronic mixer. It sounds good, it still sounds good. (or maybe let's compare to Scara, as someone alr did.) So the fact that we can have "mixed" review here just because THAT one section means there's something they're not... doing as well as usual, on that very section. Which is a shame, bcs the rest of the (2) piece is top stuff. Especially the 4:48 Ace Combat-like part. (Ace Combat's Megalith Agnus Dei). Maybe they want to make it disturbing, maybe, considering the scenario playing out, but even then that's not an excuse.
i would be curious to hear if your thoughts change at all after playing Arlecchino’s story quest and having the full context for the boss theme! not saying your opinion needs to be changed or anything, i can definitely understand why some people dislike the use of EDM/digital sounds in genshin considering the genre of the game! but it seems like EDM is reserved for characters/entities who are anomalies, “of another world”, or at least abyss-adjacent which makes sense to me since it aids in setting them apart from the rest of inhabitants of Teyvat not only visually in their appearance, but also aurally in their music/themes.
imo context shouldn't change whether or not a song (or part of a song) is good or not. EDM has sounded great in virtually every other use in the game. I just really think they missed the mark here
I know nothing about music, and watching reaction video makes me appreaciate more the work they put out. So far some says that EDM music represents outworldy power, but even if that's not the case, listening to it in a boss fight enough to make me go "Woaaahh, what is this?!" and started bopping my head. Having upbeat music in a boss fight always sounds good to me, just for the hype, you know
I think folks are right that it doesn't blend well. That said, ironically, I don't think it was supposed to. It's somewhat jarring, as is she. PERSONALLY, I still enjoy it greatly, even enjoying the clash that the final dubstep segment provides. It conjures the feeling of who she is, and that context does affect my enjoyment. As a standalone piece, it is probably the "worst" of boss themes, for sure. I do think that it does it job perfectly, though, and that's really the first priority when making these. I think part of the issue here is that the Narwhal fight was able to separate the "known" and "unknown" into separate phases. Here, I think they wanted to evoke something about her that's not really its own part of the fight and thus had to be a section of a larger piece.
It's awesome up until *that* part. I clearly loved the creative use of non-percussion instruments to create the complex rhythm patterns early in the song
I definitely agree with your take. It just didn't blend well. If they have let it be more accompanying rather than flat out be what it is and make it harmonize, it would be more pleasing to the ear. Like after the snap, immediately continue with vocals and strings first then slowly ramp up the edm? Idk im no musician but i definitely agree with yoir take here.
You're not the only one, for me EDM just does not match in the boss theme and in the context of Genshin in general. As Marco Meatball said, this boss theme isn't better than the last boss themes, it's different and I agree.
This is def the 1st combat OST in Genshin/HSR i'm not feeling it, I feel like I was going insane cos Im the only one in my friend group feeling this way, especially cos I can't quite figuring out exactly why I hate it, maybe its rushed? (One hint being they changed her entire kit a few times in beta test which was very unusual)

If you did her story quest and really did pay attention you'll understand why her theme is like this unlike any other boss themes. I won't waste any time explaining, just play her story quest and pay attention.
The problem is hearing the theme without knowing almost anything about the character's lore. In all Boss Themes, the musical sequence is based on his past and present. This soundtrack has many nods to his skills and story and that's why EDM.

I agree, of course i like the song because it is a good theme, but i dont know how to explain... there is something which felt a little off, also... the way the song progress dosnt suit well to me. To me The Signora theme is much better.
after doing this fights outside of story... Holy shit they really didn't had to put the EDM part. There was literally no moment that would fit that switch, there was no 3rd phase, there was no berserk mode at low hp where she goes sicko mode.... nothing It worked for previous weekly boss since we got send into pocked dimension where we fight Abyss Warrior so that EDM fits.... Here? We get nothing. If during the battle she send us during her Crimson Moon realm and we need to survive barrage of bloody spikes or rain of fire until we go back to normal arena THEN this EDM part would fit for 100% They fucked up, wish they removed that EDM part with next patch but we all know Hoyo and they won't do jack shit for old content...
I've waited for Arlecchino since Lazzo drop, really loved her and how her character turned out to be. But I do agree, this one is far from good enough, I didn't like it. Not bad/fail/miss though, since It does have connection with her Khaenri'ah and otherworldly backstory. The EDM part just doesn't have that punch, uniqueness, it's too generic, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth, poorly done. This boss theme surely doesn't live up to Tortellini, Signorashes & Hat Guy themes legacy, pretty dissappointed. This is also the first time I'm being dissappointed by their boss theme, and the MV is the first video I disliked on Genshin channel 😂.
Absolutely love this song except that part at 8:20. Way too much electronic imo and I HATE dubstep from the bottom of my heart, it kinda ruined the flow of the song to my taste, luckily it was just a few seconds and the bulk of the song's quality was elsewhere. The whole song, though, fits perfectly on how intimidating "Father" is, I think it's fitting. I must say I like it more than Scara's theme.
I honestly think this theme is half phenomenal and half disappointing and overall makes it the weakest boss theme. Overall, the S tier weekly boss themes are Azhdaha, Signora, and Apep, imo.
Music slaps hard and I love it. To me it also sounds like it borrowed inspiration from the scaramouch boss fight song. I think they could make it better to fit for the character though.
Here's my casual opinion. I only didn't like the "EDM" part but I don't even know what's that supposed to mean. My only active issue when I listen was the gun sounds part. Maybe I just didn't like the genre or something. And also how electronics completely covered apparent vocals. In the music video there's subtitles and I still didn't hear.
The more I think about it, I think the boss music is fine, like meh. I'm not really a huge fan of the game's update and its previous compare to 4.0-4.2
Really appreciate your honesty! Yeah but agreed, recently Hoyo-Mix has an obsession with EDM where it doesn’t really make sense enough. The team obviously has a tendency towards EDM, this is so apparent especially in the recent character demos. Genshin is a fantasy game and not sci fi like the Honkai titles, so I hope they don’t abandon the classical western orchestra-traditional instrument signature for something EDM PS: the singer is a woman
They always mixed modern and instrumental music, it's not just rescent. Also it absolutely does make scense from context of what's happening and who you fight.
EDM is used mostly by out-worldly or foreign aspects within teyvat. The Avatar of Marana uses EDM, the Shadow found inside the Narwhal uses EDM and Arlecchino, a supposed Outlander, uses EDM. I think it fits really well because in this Fantasy land where Orchestral pieces and acoustic soundscapes is the norm, a sudden switch to EDM feels out of place which really reflects what these things are. They're out of place, they did not originate in Teyvat. That at least is my explanation for the use of EDM within the game itself. As for the use of it in marketing material, that is probably not as strict in terms of symbolism. While yes the themes still need to fit the characters, the main purpose of a demo trailer is to garner hype. Hoyomix doesn't really need to adhere to storytelling through music in a trailer the same way they do within the game itself. They are free to just make very hype-centric music and EDM can fit that role with the amount of energy it can bring.
I mean we're slowly learning that there are lot of otherworldly and cosmic themes, so i wouldn't say it's out of place to have more modern music. Also EDM was already in Raiden's boss theme, no?

Many lore nerds here already pointed out that Hoyo games are connected and when we have EDM for something Abyss/Khaenri'ah relaited, or anything "from another world", it makes perfect sence. But I can see how many people can just miss this part about Arle. You have to level up friendship with her just to know about her origin.
They almost didn't commit enough on the EDM parts and so they shouldn't have included them. I think something along the line of the battle music from her animated short fit better even if her lore is the reason for the EDM parts(I wouldn't know, I haven't completed her quest because I am catching up on Fontaine stuff). It doesn't feel like "4th Fatui Harbinger boss fight music" to me and more like another monster, which I guess is the point but I think she deserved a more epic theme anyways. HOYO-MIX can do decent EDM and mix it with orchestral, H:SR and HI3rd prove it but for this theme I just think "man, I wish Ghostfinal did this theme" because Vanguard Sound has mastered the orchestral EDM horror style, just listen to "Exorcism".
I agree, for me is the worse Fatui harbinger theme, because of the EDM and also because i think they didnt explode such incredible voice , also i think the theme is shorter than the two previous ones, it felt like the best part of the song, the climax, was about to arrive, but they ended it before we get in there (i know about this last part someone would say "its because arlecchino didnt go all in" and yeah, may be, but if thats true, one of her rules is basically stay calm, so why de EDM eh??? Isnt that a musical-narrative dissonance or whatever its called?) One of the greatest things about genshin themes is that they feel complete, what i mean by that is that is, you can listen then out of context and you will still enjoy them, but thats not the case with this one (im not sure if you can enjoy this on its context either tho) So, yeah, worst fatui harbingers theme for me
Agree. It fails the legacy of previous 3. Probably they tried to squeeze too much context of Arlecchino character on this one, and hoo boy that's a lot. Eventually it becomes mix of tiny bits of everything that doesn't know what it wanted to be.

The EDM is meant to represent her curse and the Abyss/other-worldlyness as a whole, as seen with the All-Devouring Narwhal's second phase.

Mhm, but at the same time it was done very poorly in terms of EDM as the synth was too detached from the rest of rhythm, it did its job at trying to be jarring at the expense of being more unpleasant to listen to outside of context. It was also very balanced all across the track which at the point it came meant there wasn't really a peak thus being mellow all throughout which for a boss theme where the centre of attention is on a single greater threat meant that it sort of lost its meaning as a 'boss theme'.

It's important to remember that genshin OSTs all of them are context-oriented. So far hard EDM only used to depict otherworldly power. When you think like that, the EDM in arle and narwhal boss theme actually make sense, and the theme, while maybe not for everyone's ears, becomes interesting and logical. Moreover the unexplained curse that arle has (i haven't play her story quest yet, sorry) and her glitching idle actually makes sense if depicted with EDM.
The cello also represents Khaenriah. If you haven't heard her Pierro voice line, she mentions that he told her her powers come from a Khaenriahn dynasty. She also doesn't appear to be Fontanian gameplay-wise, so...

Personally I really felt a lot of the horror elements from this theme more than anything else we've heard from this game. Parts of the composition feel like it even borrows from classic horror films, sooo much of the instrumentation and choir is completely harrowing, and even the EDM section was like this grand revealing of this creeping, grotesque, and powerful monstrosity coming to get you. Horror-based music and themes are some of my favourites so I have a lot of appreciation for them.
I wonder if you have seen Arlecchino's kit or not, but her elemental burst is the reason why i like that electronic part. Every time i listen to that part of the theme her it comes to mind. Her putting the finder to her lips, commanding the orchestra to quiet down, then snapping her fingers as the silence is broken by HEAVY EDM the crimson moon rises and reality starts to glitch.
It's jarring but in a good way. Like a well earned jumpscare
i personally don't need for every genshin boss theme to sound "epic" and like we're fighting a god, because in this case we're not, arlecchino is a character who is NOT emotionally driven like La signora who is a very tragic character, who can't get over her past and her only goal is to destroy the gods who took away her lover,meanwhile arlecchino accepts her past and looks more towards the future,she is composed, she knows exactly who she is and what she wants, not to mention that this wasn't a fight to death but just arlecchino playing around and showing what she is capable of
I feel like they put the EDM here due to the glitching effect of Arle in her idle, they used EDM because she is a "very different" being, like her origin and curse. The glitch in her idle represents that she is not in this world, thats just my speculation why they used EDM in here.

why are people slamming on the edm so hard? scaramouche's boss theme not only did edm sections, it had straight up drumstep with oriental trap sections all over the place and it sounded amazing, in here its just for like 30 seconds to cap off everything else that came before and it does its job splendidly with the beat progression, if it were gone this theme would be really forgettable bc it'd just be pure buildup to absolutely nothing and again, it's been done before several times to critical acclaim
Scara is a mecha,both inside and outside.ypc went on full edm which makes sense, but abyss? I'd probably pick childe phase 3 by yu peng chen,which depicted abyss the best.
A lot comes down to misunderstanding. They specifically used sounds in the EDM settings to express the otherworldly curse and the sounds of a distorted spiders web (which she represents)
The issue isn’t EDM existing in the song at all. The main problem is the fact that it wasn’t executed and implemented into the song as well as Scara or the Narwhal did, at least in a lot of people’s opinion.

Another reason as to why it wasn't as great as the other Harbinger themes,is mainly because they fought tooth and nail and went full power just to stand a chance against the traveler,symbolising their true power, while Arlecchino was toying with the traveller and never went all out. Besides this its still a Great theme for me,and its Up there,Genshin never misses with the Bangers

I think people forget, maybe the use of EDM is bad to all this pro but I love it and its not often use but use in tandem with who is who when in Genshin everything is thematic, from the Harbinger music being dark and evil a level of chill like mostly used with a opera singer with a lower tone.

For me I thought it was fascinating. I felt it was two different characters Arlecchino/Knave. In how it was structured. You can feel the descent so I welcome your opinion.
Arlecchino is probably a descendent of the Khaenri'ah's eldest dynasty, the "Crimson Moon" Dynasty, so this is otherworldly/Abyss in style. Though there's still way too much mystery surrounding that dynasty, so the unsettling tempo is very deliberate in trying to make you feel like she's not actually from Teyvat normally, but quite literally a Khaenri'ah heiress similar to Kaeya is related to the Eclypse dynasty (the one that came after "Crimson Moon"). It's hard to listen to out of context of without knowing her possible lineage.

I’m so torn on how I feel about the EDM section of this OST. On one hand I love the context of it and what it represents for her Arlecchino’s character as well as the curse branded on her, but at the same time I really don’t like the heavy-handedness of it. Yes it’s overpowering, yes it’s intense, and yea that’s the point, but I just wish it was blended more with the classical elements that were used everywhere else in the piece. Hoyo-Mix has done it masterfully in the past, but it kinda fell off here. Still a great boss theme all round tho. The start of the 2nd phase up to that section was so good

The song feels like its incomplete or doesnt feel epic as scaramouche/tartaglia music because Arlecchino didnt use her full power as lyney mentioned in the story, so that might be the reason. Maybe the music just want to introduce or represent the vibe of her from the children of the house's pov instead?

Funfact: actually the main voice on the second phase is a Contralto(I don't care if the last clip on the official channel says that its a mezzo-soprano, my experience in choirs just screams contralto to me)

Arlecchino is literally playing with us in her battle and that lack of emotion in her story,theme and in her "character" itself is what makes people hate her theme,compared to scara or childe,who's boss themes are extremely emotional.

The moment the snap came in, that was Arlecchino taking complete control of the battle. THIS is her power at its peak and she’s letting us witness it. Her curse/bloodline is a remnant of the Khaenriah Crimson Moon Dynasty. Everyone’s already explained any power that comes from outside of Teyvat the music representation shows it. I feel like the consensus of EDM is it’s basically a cheap alternative that lacks soul and I get that. Contextually tho it just makes sense story/lore wise …. something I feel you, Marco and a lot of other musically inclined people just don’t click with b/c you don’t have time/aren’t rly interested in the lore with both this and HSR.
I personally don't find it very problematic with the EDM stuff near the end. I think the theme overall sounds good and it fits her character.
HOWEVER.
There are small things I wished they implemented into the boss theme. I personally think this boss theme in specific suffers from the lack of a particular theme that I think should've been obvious: the theme from her recently released Short Animation: Emberfire.
Video game music very frequently uses and reuses melodies as a sort of symbol. For example: the Main Theme of Octopath Traveler. They arranged it differently for the second game but they stuck with the same general idea for two games now. They may have two games out now, but they kept the main melody the same because it's what Octopath Traveler theme is. The instant you listen to it, you immediately recognize that it's the theme of the Octopath Traveler series. That theme serves as the musical identity of the series. The same concept can be applied to even area themes and battle themes as can be seen throughout the majority of Genshin Impact.
As a matter of fact, Genshin does the same thing with Childe's, Signora's, Scaramouche's and now Arlecchino's boss themes. They all include the theme of the Fatui Harbingers. You'd think that does the job already but imho that doesn't do enough for this specific case. They've decided to release an animated short regarding Arlecchino's past with a dedicated song to go with it. It's more than safe to say that that song can be considered Arlecchino's theme. The fact that they didn't include a variation of said theme in her boss theme really doesn't sit well in my mind.
Some may think that "that song doesn't fit the boss theme" and they may have been correct. However, using musical motifs doesn't mean you use the same exact theme over and over again. You can alter that theme to suit whatever situation the scene presents as long as it keeps the general idea. You can play the theme in a minor key, for instance.
Noo how can people call this the worst boss battle theme 😭 I've been listening to it for days now and it slaps so hard. I guess the EDM part isn't for everyone and I must admit that I had to get used to it too. But I personally really enjoy listening to this track now. 😌
To be fair, the bar for Genshin boss themes is VERY high. And that's the beauty of music - everyone can enjoy it and appreciate it differently

I am gonna speak my mind here. I have been playing genshin for 2 years now and I have been hoonked up with it's beautiful tracks but this is respectfully nah for me! I love edms, rock, orchestra but somehow this one just doesn't blend well together (atleast for me). Out of all the harbinger's battle themes, Signora and scaramouche is the best for me! It's just what I think.😄
I don't understand music too much, but I give this theme boss a good rating. I think most of the song is talking about The Knave, talking about the children's "Father", only after the snapping sound in phase 2, when the EDM is played, is it really talking about Arlec himself- who is being consumed by the curse outside Teyvat. During Arlec's mission battle, she suddenly brought us to witness a territory with a blood moon that did not belong to Teyvat, so I think the EDM part also suddenly appeared.

I understand where you're coming from, I also wasn't the biggest fan of that section, but it does fit with Arlecchino's lore. I think it's ok to express when you didn't like something, music is always subjective and we all have different opinions on it.
It's too on the nose and dominating, which is why I hate it. It should have been more subtle or, at least, swell over time, in my opinion.
I think the edm or dubstep represent being a person or entity is synthetic or not supposed to the world of teyvat. That's what i thought and it actually gives story i guess. And you need to do the story quest haha
I mean you're not too wrong about the music. I like all of it because it's fucken cool and it really fits Arlecchino's macabre style, but from the perspective of someone classically trained, it's kinda simple and the electronic section is just there as a filler. It doesn't really make sense from the perspective of the lore either because Peruere is Khaenrei'ahn, not Abyssal. She might be a super distant descendant of an otherworlder, but her bloodline is so diluted by this point that she might as well be a native. None of her story is actually focused on her origins either, so it isn't something that should take center stage as a coda for her music. It was a strange choice to include that last section and the most reasonable explanation for it is that it's just filler.
9/10 would listen to this music while doing anything.

If you watched his thoughts near the end of video, you would have noticed that he doesn’t have a problem with EDM itself, just the way it was presented in this track. He even listed several other tracks where he says he enjoys the EDM such as raiden’s and the all devouring narwhal.

I must say, I'm not a fan of digital instrumentation, but hoyo mix somehow managed to consistently make it work A LOT for my austistic sound sensitive ears. The snap moment just threw me on the ground in a good way and honestly, I think the EDM after that fits very well with the aspects involving her powers that don't belong to this world and her bizarre way to maintain some level of secrecy about it(and everything else). Its dissonant, in arrangment and in sound aesthetic. In a game design standpoint, this is just amazing.

Personally I would put Apep, Dvalin and Narwhal below this one. Narwhal is very close, I just prefer some elements of this Arlecchino theme.

Apep is the only one I kinda dislike. To me there's nothing that makes it really stand out as a boss theme. The Sumeru overworld battle themes feel more intense than Apep's theme. Which wouldn't be a problem if it would fit thematically but.... I also don't really feel that. There's nothing that really tells me anything about Apep in Apep's theme, it just feels like a overworld battle theme to me.

Personally, I also thought this boss theme was 'mid'. I've been reading comments, and they mostly agree that the whole track fits in context/with the narrative, and I think that's fine. I don't like the 2nd phase, I've tried to make it grow on me, but I can't feel what the majority feels for it. Personally, I find the snap/beat drop a but...'cringy'.

The Whale boss fight had full electronic music becasue the boss was somethign out of this world, Arlecchino has that music change because there is something else going on with her. You might not like it but it fits how symbolic Genshin music is. Remember, she is a character that glitches when you don't move.

As for the EDM part of the song, I myself also had mixed feelings at first, and I think a good way to describe it is 'jarring', in the context of the rest of the song. But I think it's a good representation of Arlecchino, as she is a jarring character herself. So the theme definitely suits her.
To be honest composition-wise, even I as a non-musician (who do hear this piece first using headphone, btw) can tell that the composition is pretty godly and there are a ton fck of things happening especially in that dubstep section.
The only question now is whether it sounds good or not.
Does it fit the theme they have been doing regarding when to use more electronic sound? Yes, for sure, absolutely.
Does it fit the theme of the character and her general aesthetic? Yes, definitely, too.
Does it sound good, tho? Well... depends. But usually Genshin music is highly rated, especially the boss musics (and even in Fontaine after the departure of YPC). Hell, let's compare it to Ei final boss bgm. It's not as complicated as this one, but still a mix of Japanese traditional music instrument and electronic mixer. It sounds good, it still sounds good.
(or maybe let's compare to Scara, as someone alr did.)

i would be curious to hear if your thoughts change at all after playing Arlecchino’s story quest and having the full context for the boss theme! not saying your opinion needs to be changed or anything, i can definitely understand why some people dislike the use of EDM/digital sounds in genshin considering the genre of the game! but it seems like EDM is reserved for characters/entities who are anomalies, “of another world”, or at least abyss-adjacent which makes sense to me since it aids in setting them apart from the rest of inhabitants of Teyvat not only visually in their appearance, but also aurally in their music/themes.
imo context shouldn't change whether or not a song (or part of a song) is good or not. EDM has sounded great in virtually every other use in the game. I just really think they missed the mark here

I know nothing about music, and watching reaction video makes me appreaciate more the work they put out. So far some says that EDM music represents outworldy power, but even if that's not the case, listening to it in a boss fight enough to make me go "Woaaahh, what is this?!" and started bopping my head. I think folks are right that it doesn't blend well. That said, ironically, I don't think it was supposed to. It's somewhat jarring, as is she. PERSONALLY, I still enjoy it greatly, even enjoying the clash that the final dubstep segment provides. It conjures the feeling of who she is, and that context does affect my enjoyment. As a standalone piece, it is probably the "worst" of boss themes, for sure. I do think that it does it job perfectly, though, and that's really the first priority when making these.
I think part of the issue here is that the Narwhal fight was able to separate the "known" and "unknown" into separate phases. Here, I think they wanted to evoke something about her that's not really its own part of the fight and thus had to be a section of a larger piece.

I definitely agree with your take. It just didn't blend well. If they have let it be more accompanying rather than flat out be what it is and make it harmonize, it would be more pleasing to the ear. You're not the only one, for me EDM just does not match in the boss theme and in the context of Genshin in general.
As Marco Meatball said, this boss theme isn't better than the last boss themes, it's different and I agree.
This is def the 1st combat OST in Genshin/HSR i'm not feeling it, I feel like I was going insane cos Im the only one in my friend group feeling this way, especially cos I can't quite figuring out exactly why I hate it, maybe its rushed? (One hint being they changed her entire kit a few times in beta test which was very unusual)
Same here. I can't see myself listening to this outside of the game, unlike how I kept listening to pre-Apep boss theme from time to time on RUclips etc.
If you did her story quest and really did pay attention you'll understand why her theme is like this unlike any other boss themes. I won't waste any time explaining, just play her story quest and pay attention.
The problem is hearing the theme without knowing almost anything about the character's lore. In all Boss Themes, the musical sequence is based on his past and present. This soundtrack has many nods to his skills and story and that's why EDM.
Although Apep, Narhwal and Arlecchino's themes are really good but I feel like nothing topped Scaramouche's theme yet.
Tbh I agree I also really didn't like the edm drop even though I heard it in context and as you said I usually like the drops.

I agree, of course i like the song because it is a good theme, but i dont know how to explain... there is something which felt a little off, also... the way the song progress dosnt suit well to me.
To me The Signora theme is much better.
I think its just too short haha need more of it.
They really need to up the volume on it mostly, it's half as loud as the Signora and Scaramouche themes.

Holy shit they really didn't had to put the EDM part. There was literally no moment that would fit that switch, there was no 3rd phase, there was no berserk mode at low hp where she goes sicko mode.... nothing
It worked for previous weekly boss since we got send into pocked dimension where we fight Abyss Warrior so that EDM fits....
Here? We get nothing. If during the battle she send us during her Crimson Moon realm and we need to survive barrage of bloody spikes or rain of fire until we go back to normal arena THEN this EDM part would fit for 100%

I've waited for Arlecchino since Lazzo drop, really loved her and how her character turned out to be. But I do agree, this one is far from good enough, I didn't like it. Not bad/fail/miss though, since It does have connection with her Khaenri'ah and otherworldly backstory. The EDM part just doesn't have that punch, uniqueness, it's too generic, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth, poorly done. This boss theme surely doesn't live up to Tortellini, Signorashes & Hat Guy themes legacy, pretty dissappointed.
This is also the first time I'm being dissappointed by their boss theme, and the MV is the first video I disliked on Genshin channel 😂.
Absolutely love this song except that part at 8:20. Way too much electronic imo and I HATE dubstep from the bottom of my heart, it kinda ruined the flow of the song to my taste, luckily it was just a few seconds and the bulk of the song's quality was elsewhere. The whole song, though, fits perfectly on how intimidating "Father" is, I think it's fitting. I must say I like it more than Scara's theme.

I honestly think this theme is half phenomenal and half disappointing and overall makes it the weakest boss theme. Overall, the S tier weekly boss themes are Azhdaha, Signora, and Apep, imo.
Music slaps hard and I love it. To me it also sounds like it borrowed inspiration from the scaramouch boss fight song. I think they could make it better to fit for the character though.

Here's my casual opinion. I only didn't like the "EDM" part but I don't even know what's that supposed to mean.
My only active issue when I listen was the gun sounds part. Maybe I just didn't like the genre or something. And also how electronics completely covered apparent vocals. In the music video there's subtitles and I still didn't hear.

Really appreciate your honesty! Yeah but agreed, recently Hoyo-Mix has an obsession with EDM where it doesn’t really make sense enough. The team obviously has a tendency towards EDM, this is so apparent especially in the recent character demos. Genshin is a fantasy game and not sci fi like the Honkai titles, so I hope they don’t abandon the classical western orchestra-traditional instrument signature for something EDM

They always mixed modern and instrumental music, it's not just rescent. Also it absolutely does make scense from context of what's happening and who you fight.
EDM is used mostly by out-worldly or foreign aspects within teyvat. The Avatar of Marana uses EDM, the Shadow found inside the Narwhal uses EDM and Arlecchino, a supposed Outlander, uses EDM. I think it fits really well because in this Fantasy land where Orchestral pieces and acoustic soundscapes is the norm, a sudden switch to EDM feels out of place which really reflects what these things are. They're out of place, they did not originate in Teyvat.
That at least is my explanation for the use of EDM within the game itself. As for the use of it in marketing material, that is probably not as strict in terms of symbolism. While yes the themes still need to fit the characters, the main purpose of a demo trailer is to garner hype. Hoyomix doesn't really need to adhere to storytelling through music in a trailer the same way they do within the game itself. They are free to just make very hype-centric music and EDM can fit that role with the amount of energy it can bring.
I mean we're slowly learning that there are lot of otherworldly and cosmic themes, so i wouldn't say it's out of place to have more modern music. Also EDM was already in Raiden's boss theme, no?

Many lore nerds here already pointed out that Hoyo games are connected and when we have EDM for something Abyss/Khaenri'ah relaited, or anything "from another world", it makes perfect sence. But I can see how many people can just miss this part about Arle. You have to level up friendship with her just to know about her origin.

They almost didn't commit enough on the EDM parts and so they shouldn't have included them. I think something along the line of the battle music from her animated short fit better even if her lore is the reason for the EDM parts(I wouldn't know, I haven't completed her quest because I am catching up on Fontaine stuff).
It doesn't feel like "4th Fatui Harbinger boss fight music" to me and more like another monster, which I guess is the point but I think she deserved a more epic theme anyways. HOYO-MIX can do decent EDM and mix it with orchestral, H:SR and HI3rd prove it but for this theme I just think "man, I wish Ghostfinal did this theme" because Vanguard Sound has mastered the orchestral EDM horror style, just listen to "Exorcism".
I agree, for me is the worse Fatui harbinger theme, because of the EDM and also because i think they didnt explode such incredible voice , also i think the theme is shorter than the two previous ones, it felt like the best part of the song, the climax, was about to arrive, but they ended it before we get in there (i know about this last part someone would say "its because arlecchino didnt go all in" and yeah, may be, but if thats true, one of her rules is basically stay calm, so why de EDM eh??? Isnt that a musical-narrative dissonance or whatever its called?)
One of the greatest things about genshin themes is that they feel complete, what i mean by that is that is, you can listen then out of context and you will still enjoy them, but thats not the case with this one (im not sure if you can enjoy this on its context either tho)

Probably they tried to squeeze too much context of Arlecchino character on this one, and hoo boy that's a lot. Eventually it becomes mix of tiny bits of everything that doesn't know what it wanted to be.
