- In this grocery haul, Annette shows several discounted items she picked up and talks about how getting the senior discount made the savings even better.
She shopped at our local Frys Food Store in Scottsdale, Arizona (Kroger).
In total she purchased 71 items and paid $73.92.
The biggest savings was on 2 lb bags of Popcorn Chicken. All breast meat. Retail price was $4.99 per 2 lb bag ($2.50 per pound).
Frys was discontinuing the product, so it was discounted to $.99 per bag ($.50 per pound). Annette purchased 33 bags (66 pounds).

Stocking up is included in our monthly grocery budget. Our current grocery budget is $300 for the month.

Recently at a newly opened grocery store I was able to get a special on chicken- 4 quarter chickens for $2! Needless to say I stocked up! Great to have those sorts of things in the freezer to use over the coming winter!

Thant may be true Joyce, but remember that every store has deals and close-outs!
I always look for items to buy " ahead" when I am out and about as well as doing grocery shopping. For example, I went to look at rugs at a local discount salvage store that carries a little of everything - I didn't buy a rug BUT got 20 cans of 8 ounce Tomato Sauce $.20/ each; 20 cans of Black Beans 8 ounce for $.50/each. And, the next day went back for more. I have enough for a year - they also had Toilet Tissue 4 rolls/$.50 so yup almost a year's worth !
By buying this way I am able to set aside $ for these deals when they appear

Personally, I would never clean out a clearance item. But many do
Joyce, we didn't even come close to cleaning them out. I was jut there again this morning over a week later, and the case is full again with the same deal. Must be an overstocked item that someone lost track of in the back freezer.
Joyce, I was at the store 3 weeks later, and they are still filling the case with marked down chicken nuggets!

I know Arizona markets compete big time! We live in a market where there are only 3 chains including Walmart. Do you think your deep cuts are found in markets like ours? I hunt like my life depend on it, but I’m not finding the deals I used to.
Jennifer, does deep cuts mean heavily discounted? If so, watch for sales and buy at that time. Also, if there is not a lot of competition, you may need to save on other things than meat. Can you grow a garden? Can you plant fruit or nut trees or berry bushes? Figure out how to save in other ways on your grocery budget!

I have not found the end of the month to be any better than any other time. No matter what I am going to the store for, I always run the outer loo where most of the perishable stuff is. I have found that 9-10 am is a really good time for markdowns in grocery stores. And weekdays to be the best for this!

Kroger discontinued our discount program in Fort Worth, Texas.
I go to four Food Banks a month, some items I have too much of & today I left out two bags of the stuff on curb next to mailbox for mailman to pickup, as they did this for the needy. One food bank gave a dozen cans of tuna.

I'm sure if you keep watching you'll see discounts and overstocks. Recently a single grocery store in Phoenix bought too much Corned Beef for St Patricks Day. They had 20 cases in their refrigerator and decided to clear it out by discounting it steeply. We bought a bunch at 99 cents per pound for point cut.
I'm pretty sure retailers in Australia will do the same thing when they buy too much.
