  • Today I am sharing a spice blend for a copycat version of my favorite steak rub. Szeged Steak Rub, is by far my favorite and we use it a lot in our house, especially when grilling season comes around. Its great for burgers, steaks, even roasts in the oven. However, I am having an increasingly more difficult time of finding this at a price I am willing to pay. So today I share with you my Hungarian style steak rub for your consideration!
This rub is a bit different from your typical steak rub. If you like Montreal steak seasoning it is even different from that. Wherein the main flavors in that one are heavy on the coriander or fennel. This one is heavy on the flavors that you would find in many Hungarian dishes. Like paprika, pepper flakes, celery and dill seed blended with garlic onion, salt and pepper.
I spend a lot of time dissecting the original and I think I came very close! Of course mine is not an exact match but the flavor is full and delicious. Mine has a lot less salt than the commercial brand which is not a surprise because salt is cheaper than spice. So this is another reason to make your own!
You can control the amount of salt in yours. Add more if you like it saltier add less or none at all if you are on a restricted diet. I personally like the lower salt version because if someone wants more salt they can put it on their individual serving. This way everyone gets a ton of flavor without a ton of salt.
Overall, I am pleased with this combination and will now have a way to have my steak rub even if I can no longer procure it at a good price. This one is definitely a keeper and a stash buster! If you are a collector of spices like I am and like to buy in bulk, this is a great way to make this rub in bulk and have it on hand to give as gifts. Package in small jars, boxes or decorative bags and take some to each summer barbecue or party you are invited to. This makes a great hostess gift and will be well appreciated throughout the summer!
I hope you give this recipe for my version of Hungarian Style Steak Rub a try and I hope you love it!
    Happy Eating!
