- Archie Belaney - more commonly known as Grey Owl, was known to be a leading conservationist, a best selling author, and a renowned public speaker pleading his causes to audiences of thousands across multiple countries. On the contrary, he is also known as one of the world's most renowned imposters who struggled with depression, anxiety, abandonment, and alcohol.
In July 2021 we paddled the beautiful and rustic Bark Lake Canoe Route that was once home to Grey Owl during part of his life. This film not only tells our story of this majestic canoe route; it dives into a deeper look at Grey Owl's life, his accomplishments, his failures, and the many demons that tormented him.

Trailer looks great! Looking forward to watching this when it comes out. Looks like a beautiful paddling destination with some storied history.
Very cool story. Looking forward to the film. I was part of helping put on a celebration to remember Anahareo, Grey Owls wife in Mattawa Ontario many years ago (she was born in Mattawa). It was a very cool experience to take part in. Annie Galipeau attended too, along with government officials and prominent community members. Not to mention, Mattawa was an incredible place to visit.
Oh man that's incredible! What a cool experience to have been a part of. I've never been out that way but hopefully I'll be paddling there one day👍Hope life in Barrie is treating you and your family well man! 🍻
STUNNING AND BEAUTIFUL SCENERY MY FRIEND,LIKE 43
Thank you very much!
Wow, great video. I hope you make more like this. Love the history lesson. 👍
Absolutely amazing mini documentary. I cannot wait to see the long version. I had to watch this over & over because I didn't want it to end. Very well done. I am going to the boundary water's, For 10 days in September. watching your video really has me stoked. Beautiful scenery & (top shelf videography) :)
Hello Adam! I'm jealous that you are going on a 10 day adventure to the BWCA! I'm sure that will be a spectacular trip👍👍 Thank you very much for your kind and encouraging words for this trailer, I can't wait for the full film to be completed! Cheers to you and have an AMAZING trip🍻🛶
Beautiful video thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for the encouragement!
Fantastic, looking forward to this one. Archie was one of ours... I've read a few of his books and watched a few documentaries, he was troubled alright. Ray Mears (one of our most loved outdoorsmen here in the UK) made a canoe film including a visit to Grey Owl's cabin, I think you can still find it on YT - it's very good. Greetings from England.
Hey Andy! Yup I've seen Ray's film about him, in fact the quality of that film intimidated me, and I was leery of tackling this project for fear it wouldn't match up. But I realized that I had a real desire to do it and if it doesn't match up in quality, who cares right! Thanks for checking this out Andy 🍻🛶
Really looking forward to this but maaaaan what a tease, winter! All good, will help get me through the hard water season. I might have to go back there, it’s such a great route.
Hey Rob! Yah it's a tease lol...hopefully I can get the whole film done before winter but I wanted to make sure I'm giving myself enough time. This route is fantastic! This was my favourite canoe trip that I've ever done 👍The great fishing sure is calling us back!
@@LatitudesWildernessFilms take all the time you need, even if it’s winter 2023, I’m sure we’d all prefer you take your time to work your magic on the editing.
I skipped over so much of this route that I need to go back with twice the time and fish it in its entirety
@@paddlehooked4687 Exactly, we barely touched the potential of this area fishing wise. We had big plans to explore smaller lakes around but they never panned out
Amazing job you did with that film. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you very much!
Winter 2021 now looking much more exciting! Looks epic.
Right on Derek, thanks so much! 🍻
Beautiful
Thank you so very much!
Dude. Yes! Winter can't come fast enough. I've paddled this route, including the Mississagi River and got to see the cabin as well. I can't wait to see your interpretation of it and the deep history behind it. Looking forward to it my friend!
Hey David! Thanks so much man, glad you enjoyed this👍I loved this route so much and I'm hoping to expand on this route down the Mississagi River one day 🍻🛶
I am really looking forward to the full version.
So am I lol, thanks Dave!
Hey Pete we are glad to see you have been out paddling again. Surely you will treat Archie with the same dignity and respect as you did The French River. We are looking forward to the finished work.
Thanks for checking this out! The world is quite torn on its opinions about him. I am doing my best to present the truth in a way that shows admiration, respect, and understanding for who he was, what he accomplished, as well as what he struggled with.
Paddled this many years ago and thought to go back to show my kids. Can't wait to see what conditions are like now, looking forward to it!
It's such a beautiful route, the eastern side was the highlight for us (Boumage, Long, Big Trout lakes). So very beautiful and amazing fishing! You wouldn't regret taking your kids there👍All the best to you 🍻🛶
Pete! This is too good ✨ Your skills are developing at warp speed, and the results look amazing!
I paddled part of this route last year on a longer loop, and have since spent a ton of time in the Mississagi region - I can’t wait to see your take!
Really looking forward to the full doc 👍
Thanks so much David! That's very encouraging to hear 👍 I've looked at expanding this route and it seems like the options are almost endless! I'd love to hear more about the routes you've explored around this area if you're willing to share...take care my friend 🍻🛶
@@LatitudesWildernessFilms of course! Last year I paddled from Mozhabong up to Biscotasi, and then up to Spanish Lake, down the Mississagi to Bark Lake, finishing at Lac aux Sables. This year I also joined David Lee on his portage project, doing a far more involved route in the same area…
I’ve also paddled the 4M route just north of Bisco, and the Dunlop-Flack route through Blind River PP. …One could spend months paddling in the area, with more left unexplored.
Algoma is awesome 👍
Gonna be awesome Pete! Can’t wait Brother!
Thanks so much Doug! I'm hoping next summer you, me, and Marc could hit some crown land for an epic get-together 👍🍻
Great trailer my friends,like 44
Thank you so much!
I am looking very forward to this adventure, thanks for filming and sharing. :) :)
Thank you so very much Jacqueline!
Grey owl. Troubled, maybe. Inspirational, definitely!! What a Brit! 😜 Really looking forward to seeing this bud. I know it'll be a good one. 👍 Stay safe.
Hey Darren thank you so much! I'm very curious to see how folks respond to Grey Owl's story, should be very interesting! All the best to you!
Great to see a new trailer from you! Can hardly wait to see the full length video.
Right on! Glad to hear you enjoyed this👍👍
Wow, I’m really excited to see the full piece, love the work you are doing!
Hi Matt! Thank you so very much for the support!
I just found your channel today! I subscribed 👍
It looks like you share a great amount of interesting history! That's awesome!
- Heidi from Michigan
Hey Heidi from Michigan! I'm in Sarnia just across the St. Clair River. Welcome to the channel and thank you so much for the encouragement and support, so very appreciated 👍All the best to you! 🛶🛶
Welcome back. I think your companion is your brother? Good times spent together following a pioneer route. Cheers, Paul from Melbourne, Australia
Hey Paul! My paddling partner Bill is actually my cousin but I consider him the brother I never had👍Cheers to you from Ontario, Canada! 🍻
Wow this looks fantastic, can't wait to see the actual film. Really love your storytelling style and presentation, it adds another element to the beautiful scenery and history of that place.
Hey Darren, thanks so much for the encouragement man👍🍻
🤘awesome buddy🤘
Right on Marc! Hope you and John caught a pile of big bass🍻
@@LatitudesWildernessFilms We did! It was a good trip, I even caught two bass on one lure at the same time! A first for me 😆
@@OpenAirOutdoors no way that's so awesome! Funny how I just told you that story of how that just happened to me lol!
Awesome, really looking forward to this!! I actually I hate fishing, but I'm obsessed with the concept of canoe tripping/backcountry camping (haven't tried it yet, just saving up for the gear and researching it for now), and your videos are fantastic for that!
Hello Richard! Thank you very much for your encouragment! Canoe tripping continues to be one of the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences in life for me, I'm sure you will feel the same way one day when you are able to experience it for yourself! All the best with your savings and research, and never hesitate to ask me any questions you may have 👍
Amazing💖🥰🍻
Thank you! I still plan on releasing this although it is definitely behind. Stay tuned!
@@LatitudesWildernessFilms awesome
I just watched this for a second time... I was wondering how it was coming along. Maybe you hit a road block in your editing endeavours, as I did these last few months. I hope all is well in Ontario Pete, looking forward to seeing the full version 💙
Hey Amy! Thanks so much for checking in. This year has been one of the toughest in life for me, and finding the motivation and creativity for this project (and others) has really been hard to come by. But, thankfully as the chaos has slowed, I'm beginning to find that groove again slowly. I do hope to have a couple projects out before the paddling season starts. How about you? Are you finding a way around the road blocks you are facing? Hope all is well with you!
@@LatitudesWildernessFilms so pleased to hear you've been able to find your groove again and it's building mate 🤗 unfortunately creativity is the first thing to drop off when we're faced with challenging times... well, at least for some of us! Don't put pressure eon yourself... your creativity will bloom when you're ready, and the vids will be ready when they're ready. We're all happy to wait. Take care x
Is this still planning on being released?
Hey Matt, yes I still plan on releasing this once it's finished, but it is definitely behind. Life took many different turns for me over the last year. I'm hoping it will be finished this winter. Cheers!
@@LatitudesWildernessFilms all the best to you! Hope life settles down for you! Looking forward to it
Hi. New subscriber to the channel here. Trailer looking awesome, but now I see it's been 9 months since it was posted and still no sign of the full thing. Any chance of us getting to see it soon. Hope you are ok. Al the best
Hi there, thank you so much for subscribing! My life has taken a very different and difficult turn over the last year. I am still committed to finishing this project and another epic one that is also in the works as well, but now I cannot guarantee when either will be completed. They will be worth the wait no doubt. I won't put either one out until I am completely satisfied that they are the absolute best quality that I can make them. Hang in there my friend, you won't regret it. All the best to you!
@@LatitudesWildernessFilms hope things work out for you. All the best
The background music is not in the background! Way too loud. It makes it hard to hear what is going on.
Who is the music I can’t hear the narrator
Hey Raymond I'll have the music sources listed in the full film once it comes out.
nothing to forgive... watching the movie he was there, he is Native American.... there is no such thing as time, all exists now in a timeless ever existing NOW... he was experiencing a very strong lifetime... the turn of the scenery.. it was just only in thee 1800 that the Native American's were invaded and who better to come back as a white man to talk like a white man what they needed to STILL hear... He was experiencing a concurrent life time and felt to try again in a different part of time... we all feel we have a so called pretend person inside of us... who says it is us in another part of so called time.
