I love the consistency in Oda's character, because what's to remember is that he killed his own son to protect Wessex, respect his King and serve him properly. It's not that Oda has no emotion when it comes to Aethelflaed or her fate, it's just that he's always seen the bigger picture. Said bigger picture with poor people that are often forgotten by the rulers.
I love that they show Osferths struggle to fight because its a nice change of pace of the “suddenly guy with sword can fight and isn’t afraid to kill even though he has never done it before.” Its realistic and also it allows growth for the character
It will always baffle me how underrated this show is!! Literally the best storytelling, amazing relationships between Utred and his people, the conflicts and action scenes are top notch, and the character growth of Utred makes him one of the best characters ever written in my opinion! Hands down one of my favorite series ❤️
Before season 3 came out I remember they released a behind the scenes video or Alexander Dreymon calling out loud for his warriors They all answer from their houses an Clapa appears “Lord?!” An Alexander Dreymon is like “not you Clapa you’re dead!” Clapa just hangs his head down an walks off
Æthelflæd was actually a real historical character, and yes she is a warrior princess. William of Malmesbury, the Anglo-Norman chronicler, describes her as “a powerful accession to Edward's party, the delight of his subjects, the dread of his enemies, a woman of enlarged soul”.
Something about Erik throwing his life away thinking he would be able to live happily ever after with the daughter of the king that is his enemy made me not really like the character tbh.. not the smartest
This season finale was always so powerful. Uthred loses men, Rypere, Clappa, Erik dies protecting his love, but Sigfried is broken after killing him. Then Alfred's hate against Oda is not only because he cares about his daughter, but also because he knows he can not allow him to behave like that and not put a punishment on his friend. RIP Oda, most loyal man of Alfred, who always did what he did for Wessex, only for Wessex.
Alfred was heartbroken by Oda's betrayal and what he hates most is that he fully understands why Oda did it but his denial refuses to allow him to accept it. the impact on Alfred Oda made sets him up for Season 3 perfectly. where he just makes once massive mistake that almost undoes everything he's ever built in one night.
It's no spoiler for the future episodes, but the historic Æthelflæd was indeed actually known as the "Lady of the Mercians" and was adored and loved by her subjects. Contemporary historians referred to her as "the delight of [her] subjects, the dread of [her] enemies, a woman of enlarged soul." Seems like a pretty amazing historical figure.
Yes she is definitely one of our greatest queens.. Although Uthred is a great character.. I feel the shows makes him far too much of a hero.. It takes the limelight away from Alfred,, and as Alfred is truly historic and Uthred isnt, it seems a little disingenuous.
@@ComradeCommissarYuri ah I didnt know that.. Still it would be nice to see a more historically accurate telling, one which shows you how hard Wessex had to fight to survive.. Litterally if Wessex had fallen, They'd be no Anglo saxons today, and certainly no England.. However this is a great show and far more accurate than other similar shows that I've seen.
@@markmorris7123 Maybe, but Anglo-Saxons barely ruled England, the Christian Danes ruled for a bit, and then the Normans. Anglo-Saxons were still there, as they would've been, and the Danes would've Christianised regardless. It really isn't the biggest difference, though the Hegemony England naturally possesses in its region is notable.
Love how much you guys love this show. It's such a fun ride, with such amazing characters. Season 2 is my favorite, but it's great all the way through.
Ya, I felt really sorry for Odda. He had to kill his own douche of a son with no other heir in place to carry on his legacy and was left with nothing but his love and devotion to Wessex and even that betrayed him leaving him to be put on trial and humiliated by one of his only friends. Oof.
@@zoe_blackmore it's because she undercuts and defeats the typical current day feminazi arguments of women need to be exactly like men in order to be strong and powerful Aethelflaed was very much a badass warrior queen and battle commander on the field and played very well in a man's world yet at home in mercia she was your typical lady who played the part of a lady at court and knew she was expected to produce heir's for her husband. she knew her place in the world yet at the same time was able to also rise above it. she didn't feel the need to be a man to be able to compete in a man's world and i love how both the TLK show and books stuck to this history and didn't turn her into the modern girlboss your seeing everywhere such as (Rey,captain marvel,Galadreil etc etc)

Regarding Osferth getting shouted at, I think it's more of a lesson than anything else. Uhtred knows its a matter of life and death and is trying to drill that in as quickly and as clearly as possible in order to keep him alive. It's done to help protect him, not punish him.
Uhtred is very much a father figure/big brother figure to Osferth he can see the Warrior and courage within him but he knows that babying him is not going to turn him into that warrior. it's tough love.
@@ComradeCommissarYuri and by Season 5 the writers confirmed that Osferth has almost as much reputation as finan and Uhtred by that point both in combat and as a bit of a womanizer. he's just not as open about it.
Erik and his brother were two of the best characters on this show. Was sad to see them gone. Erik basiaclly made sure he killed both him, his brother and like 80% of their army because he fell in love. Even if they escaped there was no chance for them to live togheter. If they escaped back to his homeland he wouldve been seen as a traitor and most likley killed. And they couldve never lived togheter in wessex as she was allready married and that would only bring more war with athelDhead.
while it should come across as the typical cliche love beats them all and it is but it doesn't feel like that at all because like everything in the last kingdom it's just so damn well executed. Sigfried and Erik are both tragic characters with Erik being somewhat of a tragic hero and Sigfried being the tragic Villian who just wanted him and his brother to achieve greatness. they weren't your typical dane Antagonists. you can tell that in any other circumstance they could off have ended up as apart of Uhtred's warband but sadly fate had other ideas.
@@michaelkean5969 - I don't think Sigefrid could have been a part of Uhtred's war band, he was too cruel and wasn't principled enough. Uhtred was a warrior but abhored unnecessary violence, especially against helpless people. Sigefrid seemed to revel in that kind of violence. But Erik... oh, definitely! There was definitely mutual respect and a potential for friendship between him and Uhtred. But then again, Erik and Uhtred could also have been rivals in love, since they both fell for Aethelflaed! In her entire life they were her only two lovers (I don't count Aethelred as one, because he's an abuser and rapist).
@@michaelkean5969 - Oh sure, Aethelflaed's love affairs with Erik and Uhtred were at very different stages in her life. She was so young with Erik and that moonlight kiss with him was probably her first! Aethelred wouldn't kiss her, he just abused her. And then Uhtred came along when she was a grown woman and a mother.
Another great reaction guys 🥰 When Clappa grinned and nodded to Uhred *I've got this boss* to allow them to escape 😢 Siefried killing his brother was also heartbreaking! RIP Eric (and his dimples) Siegfried (and his left hand) Clappa (and his moustache) gonna miss you big guy! ❤
I'm so glad you finally started watching this series and that you're loving it as much as I do! It's such a great adaptation. The great humor and amazing relationships between the characters comes straight from the mind of the author, Bernard Cornwell. And Cornwell loves the performances, especially that of Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred -- so much so that he dedicated the final book in the series to Dreymon. I mean, how awesome is that?! I am really enjoying your reactions to the shows that I watch.
He dedicated one of his "Sharpe" books to Sean Bean too. Remember Sean Bean in LOTR picking up thr shards of the sword then knicking his finger? He said "still sharp". One of Peter Jackson's in house jokes.
The fact that in Aelswith's time of need, the fear for her most precious thing in life her daughter, speaks VOLUMES. Deep down she knows his value. She is just a zealot, like Floki, and can't see past it right now. Same for Alfred. He's NOT dumb, but he's highly conflicted and yes it's annoying, but he is who he is. He knows he needs Uhtred. But Odda being put to death seems avoidable, but from a King standpoint I guess I Kinda get it. Odda the elder was just awesome sad he's gone! Osferth has interesting growth, and is a great member of Uhtred's crew. Which is one of my favorite things about this amazing show!
Aethelwold is a devious scheming rat . He gave Odda the knife because dead men tell no tales, he didn’t want it to be known about his involvement. I’ve seen TLK many times,so I know what’s to come ,bring it on it just gets better and better. I am enjoying your observations and am amazed that you have so much of the footage,a lot more than many others that I have watched. Thank you
Funny how TLK Season 2's finale does everything the battle of winterfell in season 8 of GOT does but does it BETTER. See how it not only makes every character feel relevant it also makes it feel that no one is safe considering how you loose Erik, Siegfried and Clappa (Clappa goes out in pretty much the same way Leofric goes out) all in the same episode and Uhtred almost feels like a secondary character in this finale like Jon Snow did in the battle of winterfell yet unlike Jon Snow Uhtred still felt relevant. Uhtred in this finale really wasn't the Hero of the day and just another player in the "game of thrones" playing his own angle to saving Aethelflaed and to defeat the Danes. Uhtred like everyone else in the final battle just came across as another solider that could have died here when he got almost ran over by the horse and had several ribs broken. this is how you do a solid battle and make everyone feel expendable and make the plot armor feel non-existent even if it is still present. you don't see Uhtred and Finan standing ontop of a mound of Danes slaughtering them by the hundreds. edit: also Odda was the MVP here who made the ultimate sacrifice.
This show is my comfort show and I'm so jealous of you guys watching it for the first time ever. Plus I love the both of you too. This show will continue to get better and it sucks that they couldn't make anymore seasons but there is a movie coming out which will hopefully answer some question and conclude it completely
I really like Odda in this episode. The Wessex people have given so much, and all Alfred considers is his daughter (which I get, but). Actually kidnapping would be a great option if Uhtred would return her to Wessex.
The Osferth thing is kinda from the books, when they attack Lundane Uhtred knows Osferth killed a maimed man Uhtred tells Osferth there was no honour in that an no way to make reputation During a fight with Sigfrid in a shield wall Osferth leaps from the batttlements an maims Sigfrid’s legs in the process Later after Sigfrid impales Erik on his sword Eriks oathmen fight Sigfrids Uhtred kicks Sigrid’s sword away an lets Osferth kill him
I LOVE this finale for season two … it’s just pure fire 10/10. The whole season is so awesome… wondered where the story was going but it ended up just perfect!!! RIP the great Clapa, Erik, Odda, and even RIP Siegfried because he was such a good character … there isn’t pure plot at our for everyone we love in this show, but all the deaths meant something and the story was told so well. AWESOME EP I JUST LOVE IT !!!!❤❤❤❤ Thanks again SO MUCH for reacting to this show; you two are doing an amazing job!
Oda had a valid argument he was basically calling out the king for asking other people for sacrifices their own children when he was not willing to do the same. Alfred was being selfish by putting his daughter before the kingdom when he put other people in that same position. And in the in Oda was the one that saved Wessex.
Anyone else proper impressed with the way Steven rattled through those names at 5:06? I've watched this show twice as well as a host of reactions and I couldn't of done that. Take a bow Sir.
I get so fucking invested in these damn side love stories it really breaks my heart when it ends up as a tragedy. Erik was lovely to Aethelfled and I soo wanted them to escape, but I'm so glad that she's pregnant with his child, IN UR FACE AETHELRED!! Valhalla awaits you Erik 🥺
I don’t think they’ve worked out that some of these people existed in history. Had they done that they might have realised that Aethelfled was never going to run away with Erik. 😂😂
Odda's finale legit hit me so hard in the feels. Just to see the most honorable guy in the entire show, dying alone, in a dark cell, by suicide after a lifetime of service. 😓😓
Clappa was just the ultimate Himbo. Not much going on upstairs, but the sweet and funniest guy. Erik being the prettiest man to exist (which given the men of the show is an amazing feat, they all be gorgeous).
Odda went against his King's express wishes, so was a traitor, even with the best intentions. If Alfred pardons Odda, he will be seen to be weak and could encourage other people to go against him and put his dream and hold on the land in peril.
It was a difficult choice to consider the death of his daughter. Alfred was acting emotionally which I understand. But he was harsh in dismissing Odda and basically ignored the fact he killed his own son for Wessex and his king.
You're so invested in this, and both of your takes on it are so on point 👍 I f@cking loved Steven describing Ethelred as a 'Gigantic Asshole'. Amazing acting, writing and pacing.
I know I’m late but I have to type this. Alfred’s insufferable attitude really makes it hard to get through the series and imagine he eventually becomes Alfred the Great. He didn’t make a single good decision (that he wasn’t forced to make) this whole episode. His inability to reward the men who are loyal to Wessex due to his personal issues with people (Odda’s drinking and “insolence”, Uhtred’s paganism) is one of his core weaknesses as a king. And his conflating his daughter with Wessex was absolute bulls$&!. He raised a daughter or be prepared to die for her country and yet he wasn’t prepared to do the same. Odda has been presenting hopelessly because he has no one to leave Devonshire to and Alfred’s extreme blindness doesn’t allow him to appreciate and reward the monumental sacrifices of his earldomen. He misjudges Uhtred, he misjudges Aethelred and it compromises his effectiveness as a ruler because he refuses to grow. He wants to have his “dream of a United England” but he lacks the judgement, decisiveness, appreciation to keep his true friends close and his enemies fearful of him. He’s the true villain of this episode. Aethelflaed would not have been in danger at all if he recognized Aethelred’s treachery and Uhtred’s loyalty but all he wants is for his snake of a wife (Aelswitch) to tell him everything he wants to hear. Thank you for coming to my TLK Ted Talk.
Honestly, when I was watching this show (now watching the latest season), I couldn't believe that it was so under the radar and not really talked about. The Last Kingdom got me through, especially after I lost interest in Vikings after Ragnar died (but I picked that show up again too, lol). The Last Kingdom has never disappointed, so far.
I fi get the spelling ov names wrong i appologise, i'm ESaxon not EDanish How do i know I'm Stocky and have brown eyes....Paul hogan Clapper defo danish bacon xD
Season 2 ending sad but great 😃 Lord Oda really sacrifice everything for his people, England and even for his King Alfred. Uthred wanted Lord Oda to do nothing since he is losing a friend.
I believe part of Otta killing himself also was because of his wife. Had their been a trial and he convicted of treason his lands, wealth, and home would be forfeited to the king leaving his wife homeless, broke and alone as well as Uhtred's ex who last we knew/seen lived at Otta's home. Also it saved them the embarrassment of the trial itself. Alfred is a jerk and at no time has he EVER said thank you, not even when his son's life was saved. If I was Uhtred I would have done packed my family up and left to join Ragnar, leaving a note telling Alfred to kiss the booty. Coming in the later seasons there are some great scenes between the two.

Uhtred like everyone else in the final battle just came across as another solider that could have died here when he got almost ran over by the horse and had several ribs broken.
this is how you do a solid battle and make everyone feel expendable and make the plot armor feel non-existent even if it is still present. you don't see Uhtred and Finan standing ontop of a mound of Danes slaughtering them by the hundreds.
edit:
also Odda was the MVP here who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Also this battle had a much lower budget and yet had decent lighting so we can actually tell what’s happening
@@awesomness36 yup so true.
Just finished this show today can't wait to watch it all again with you guys!!
I love this show so much!
Honestly, it’s become my favorite. Thank you for reacting to it as I wouldn’t have started watching otherwise.
🤗
This show is my comfort show and I'm so jealous of you guys watching it for the first time ever. Plus I love the both of you too. This show will continue to get better and it sucks that they couldn't make anymore seasons but there is a movie coming out which will hopefully answer some question and conclude it completely
Lol Steven " Whats Up Arselings " xD
I really like Odda in this episode. The Wessex people have given so much, and all Alfred considers is his daughter (which I get, but). Actually kidnapping would be a great option if Uhtred would return her to Wessex.
The Osferth thing is kinda from the books, when they attack Lundane Uhtred knows Osferth killed a maimed man
Uhtred tells Osferth there was no honour in that an no way to make reputation
During a fight with Sigfrid in a shield wall Osferth leaps from the batttlements an maims Sigfrid’s legs in the process
Later after Sigfrid impales Erik on his sword Eriks oathmen fight Sigfrids Uhtred kicks Sigrid’s sword away an lets Osferth kill him
Athelfaed is known in history as the Warrior Queen of Merica.
AWESOME EP I JUST LOVE IT !!!!❤❤❤❤
Thanks again SO MUCH for reacting to this show; you two are doing an amazing job!
Oda had a valid argument he was basically calling out the king for asking other people for sacrifices their own children when he was not willing to do the same. Alfred was being selfish by putting his daughter before the kingdom when he put other people in that same position. And in the in Oda was the one that saved Wessex.
Dude, this show. So good. I look forward to your Last Kingdom videos every week! 😁⚔️🤘🏻
Anyone else proper impressed with the way Steven rattled through those names at 5:06? I've watched this show twice as well as a host of reactions and I couldn't of done that. Take a bow Sir.
It just gets better and better from here, The Books I hear are one of the best kept secrets of the fiction genre.
For many real history acts as a spoiler.
Odda's finale legit hit me so hard in the feels. Just to see the most honorable guy in the entire show, dying alone, in a dark cell, by suicide after a lifetime of service. 😓😓
I love Nikki so much. “I need them to have love and all the things!” 😂🙌🏻
Let’s goo arselings! Good timing with the upload I literally just sat down after a long day😅
Loving video drops on Mondays instead of Tuesdays and I'm so excited for Season 3~! WOOT WOOT! You guys are so wonderfully amazing!
I was really rooting for her and Erik too 😪 at least she was shown true love. Even if it was brief. It was real ❤️
I just now realized that we were not shown the return of money to people after the release of Alfred’s daughter.
No filler episodes on this show. Only bangers.
Thank you for doing this show. It’s my favorite.
Great stuff. Can't wait for Season 3!
I forgot that there was a time when Osferth couldn't fight. It's weird now, lol.
Utred is out here getting another person to take care of cause he’s too kind 😅
Her: I trust you most
Him: ah sht here we go again
Season 3 is even better, Iam sure youll absolutely love it!
your gonna love ep 4 finale !
I’m so excited for the movie 😭😭😭
Clappa was just the ultimate Himbo. Not much going on upstairs, but the sweet and funniest guy.
Erik being the prettiest man to exist (which given the men of the show is an amazing feat, they all be gorgeous).
I think I’ve binged the whole show twice since you guys began. It’s so hard waiting a week
Odda was a real one.😢😢 Can’t wait for your reaction to season 3.
Waiting for this couple every tuesday! Even though i watch the whole series im still excited to watch it again with this couple❤️❤️❤️
🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
finally, i waited a long time for u to progress watching this tv show. really enjoying it
Odda went against his King's express wishes, so was a traitor, even with the best intentions.
The show gets better and more emotional. Excellent writing.
Aethelflaed is one of my favourite characters. I'm so sad about Erik. Loved him ☹️
Oh ya this is awesome! You guys are awesome! Im watching it again for like the 100th time, im right where you guys are, best show ever!
You're so invested in this, and both of your takes on it are so on point 👍
I f@cking loved Steven describing Ethelred as a 'Gigantic Asshole'.
Amazing acting, writing and pacing.
So excited for season 3!! Great reactions!
Can we get a counter on how many times nikki say: honestly?😂😂🤣
I absolutely love this season, and the last episode was amazing, that shield wall is the best I’ve seen. Love the music
It just gets better and better.. definitely more crying moments nikki.. this show is so good..
Looking forward to Season 3. You'll love it. I promise
Uhtred just burns stuff at every opportunity😂
Uthred's loyalty goes way and beyond.
I am so happy you guys love this show as much as we do.
Destiny is al!
Season 3 is the best season and the last kingdom peaks in that season. In my opinion.
Love seeing Nikki so invested in what was happening on screen that she couldn’t even entertain Steven’s comments at one point!
In just 2 episodes they were able to give us such a magnificent love story.
The music adds to the story as well.
Every season gets better & better ❤
Shouted a mental “oh yes” as soon as I saw this lets goooo
I know it is hard to believe but it gets even better.
I’m really happy there is a book series. I’m going to start it soon.
Rip Clapper ( Paul Hogan Moustache )
I fi get the spelling ov names wrong i appologise, i'm ESaxon not EDanish How do i know I'm Stocky and have brown eyes....Paul hogan Clapper defo danish bacon xD
Bloody handlebars
can we get 2 episodes a week starting with season 3?
25:46 Steven is like "I could if they threatened you or the kids."
One of the Underrated show....i will always tell.... .
So Osferth obviously grows up and finds his courage, then gets a dragon and starts a war 😁
Season 2 ending sad but great 😃 Lord Oda really sacrifice everything for his people, England and even for his King Alfred. Uthred wanted Lord Oda to do nothing since he is losing a friend.
Remembering too that Odda killed his own son for the sake of the Kingdom...
Counting days for tuesday to come😂😂😂
Waiting for this couple reaction on TLK love them so much
FINALLY!!! People who interpret a story the way that I did!
