I'm with you Mark. I prefer 43% more often than not. It takes a special whisky bottles at 46% that you wouldn't have to add water to.

Thanks for commenting, Rob from Whisky in the 6! I recently tried Singleton of Glen Ord - oddly enough flavour even at 40%! It all depends on the whisky, doesn't it?
      Cheers,
      Mark

Hi Mark, So yo did get yourself some Hakushu after all. I like this and in Britain it's still just affordable. Some people have commented on a farm yard note in the green flavour profile. I would describe it as a whisper of cow pat, but that is a good note which you also find in top quality cider (Herefordshire - Gwatkin). White peach; pine; green stuff (thanks Ralfy). Cheers!

Thanks for all the comments! Haha yes I did. I liked it as well(obviously) but I should put a disclaimer since I only got one shot at it! No way I'd buy one here - it's priced like a 16 or 18 yo Scotch whisky ...can't justify it. Wish I had a few more 'at bats' to see if I get the complexity I clearly missed! Cider...its so hot it Seoul now that would hit the spot..
      Thanks again,
      Mark

I am going to japan again this year and I’m hoping I can find a hakushu 12. My favorite whisky so far is the Hakushu single malt no age statement that I picked up last year in Osaka. Really want to get an aged bottle this year. Any recommendations on shops that would carry it in Osaka, Kyoto or Kobe? After our last talk last September about the Yamazaki exclusive bottle, I managed to grab six of them last November. Definitely a great dram, I’ll be visiting the Distillery again this year to grab a couple more. Really want the hakushu 12 though.

Hi! Nice to hear from you again!
You might have a hard time finding one. That said, there are so many liquor stores so you may want to visit as many as possible. Some places that aren’t liquor stores also carry liquor like Don Quixote in Osaka. Make sure you get a Chivas 12 Mizunara as well. It’s great and very inexpensive

Chivas 12 Mizunara, i use to be very fond of Chivas. I never heard of that particular bottle though. Distilled in Japan?

RM Design no it’s the same Chivas brand Scotch but they finish it in Mizunara casks so it has a distinct Japanese whisky element. It’s great! Oh and Kirin Distillery - a whisky called Fuji-Sanroku - 50 percent and unchillfiltered- a blend but an excellent one and only 15-20 dollars in Japan.
      Have fun!

First time watching your videos. Great stuff - thanks.
I have some tasting notes from 2010 on the Hakushu. Bottle long gone so I'll need to get some more as I definitely enjoyed it. As well as the sweet fruity tones, smoke and oak you noticed, I additionally noted honey, salt and a slight butteriness. I'd be interested to know if you get those on re-tasting. Cheers!

Thank you so much for tuning in and commenting! I'll have to get another mini sometime to see if I can find the butteriness. It is s great whisky, isn't it? That is a solid score for this solid dram.
      Thanks again!
      Best,

Hi Mark. Is this warranting the price of around $250? I tried the NAS hakushu didn’t like the taste much

Hi Dek, no, it is a $80 dollar whisky at best. I think they are making more so if you wait you might see better prices.

    great review!
I have been loving Hakushu since 2013 :) I love the ZEN like characteristics, elegant, clean, barley sugar, barley malt, then green apple, asian pear, peach, mint, a tad of spicy smokey hint, extremely well balanced. After taste is medium, clean, consistent, no bitterness. Minimum cask influence IMHO. It has been my staple ever since. Still loving it.
I am having this along with this video. just for fun, I have Compass Box Spice Tree side by side since it has exactly the same price point and very similar characteristics.
I prefer Hakushu since my personal preference toward fresh fruits vs. stewed/cooked fruit profile.
    91 point in my book!

Thanks very much for your kind comments. I also really enjoyed it. I'm hoping I get to Japan while i'm here out East. I'll stock up and take in the distillery tours hopefully. You've got good taste' spice tree is one of my faves as well, especially considering the price. Nice tasting notes and deserved score by the way, it's been a long time but I recall the strong fresh fruits in Hakushu. Delicious.
      Cheers,
      Mark

Did you buy that miniature in Canada? I loved Yamazaki and Hakushu when I lived in the UK. In BC it is not available. UK price for the 12-yo is £75. NAS distillers edition £45 and it can be bought at grocery stores. I'd love to be able to buy miniatures in BC.

Should've commented after watching it all. ... You got the honey near the end! My 2010 score was 85/100

It's personal, I know, but I really don't think this needs water. I don't think there is a single 40% whisky that would not be improved by an extra 3% minimum. For me 43% is the new minimum. Producers are taking us for mugs at 40%. A single 1% less and they can't call their product whisky!! This is a matter of respect for the purchaser/consumer. 40% is taking the piss.

    • @WhiskyWhistle

...it's good to have opinions, I think!! I generally agree though I just opened singleton of Glen Ord 12YO - was on sale so I decided to try - it seems to pack a lot of flavour in at 40%. I suppose it might be better at 43 ...
Other spirits, though... Vodka at 38%?? Tequila as well? And guess what - a company in Korea waters down the whisky to 36% and still calls it whisky here. Absolutely, though, if I could find all brands at 43% or more I would be very very happy.
Deanston will be coming up soon...heady stuff!
      Cheers,
      Mark

Yeah, Sorry about the rant. I am able to enjoy a range of spirits at 40% (providing they are cheap) but with whisky....Oh, well. It's the EU IN/OUT referendum tonight and a lot Brits, including me, are rather highly strung at the moment.

Not at all! Again I agree with you! . I am watching and waiting for the results as well....an important moment across the globe whose biggest effects will be felt for laypersons in UK, methinks...
