There can be no doubt that in recent years Liverpool's recruitment has been exceptional. But it's not always been that way!

Liverpool has long-standing rivalries with Manchester United and Everton. The team changed from red shirts and white shorts to an all-red home strip in 1964 which has been used ever since. Balotelli was far and away the worst. He just didn't care about anything. Most of these others were bad but not as deeply disrespecting of the shirt. Nasty piece of work.

@@robtyman4281 Djiouf turned out to be a disgrace for the club. All the worse when you remember that Houllier refused to sign an eager Anelka to a long-term contract in favor of that pile of rubbish from Senegal. At least Salif Diao wasn't a jerk. Houllier was a gentleman, and brought a lot of success to the club, and we Reds fans owe him a debt for making Gerrard the captain in 2003...but some of the signings he made were so far off the mark that they almost undid the good he achieved as the gaffer there.
A waste of talent, he could have been brilliant if he wanted to.
Andy Carroll 35 mil from Newcastle. Never done well but scored the final goal that put Everton out the FA cup. Worth every penny 😂
Robbie keane shouldn't be in that he never got a fair crack and when he did he scored
some of the above players that i know was actually good but injury ravage their talent and some were not worst but actually not given mucj playing time to prove themself. keane might hv been good if only rafa utilise him properly. managers were sometimes at fault too at wasting a talent.
Agree about Keane. Scored a few goals, never given a proper chance. Manager didn't want him from the start.

None of these players were ever in a Liverpool side that got relegated, or then failed to win promotion back to the top flight. You do know Liverpool have a century of history that predates 1998, and a good few years of it was spent outside the top flight?

Watched this and then read the comments. Found myself stuck in a loop going "Yeah, he was crap", "Oh yeah he was crap", "Who?" and "I'm glad I forgot about him".
Igor Biscan. I still have nightmares. Joe Cole. Julian Dicks. Oivid Leonhardsson.
If i had to pick a team, i'd say; Bogdan (only a handful of appearances, but made some real goalkeeping clangers in each one), Kvarme, Traore, Moreno (could be relied upon to make a howler in a big game), Koncheski, Le Tallec, Vignal, Diao, Dundee, Balotelli, Diouf. The final three (strikers) also had bad attitude to go with bad performances.
Its a bit embarrassing that weve had so many flops really - I can think of loads in the PL era. Even Morientes flopped when he played for us.
It's funny though, that even some of these not so good players (Nunez, Sinama-Pongolle) had their moments. Check out the comeback against Olympiakos in 2005. Great jump from Nunez, and Sinama was involved in 2 goals. The one defining awful player for me, considering how many games he played, was Ngog. How Rafa subbed Torres off for Ngog still baffles me today. If Torres had one leg hanging off he'd still be better than Ngog. Ngog even went to Ross County and was rubbish. I get it, mistakes happen when potentially good players arrive and they really aren't good, but don't play them just because you bought them! Funnily enough, Rafa replaced Richarlison with Rondon the other day...maybe Ngog will come out of retirement for Rafa/Everton!
I still think Rafa's team selection at the 2007 champions league final vs Milan cost us the match. Had he started with Crouch it would have been different. Remember the blonde pony tailed striker Voronin,? He was garbage. And his serious error was pissing off Alonso with trying for Gareth Barry, that he left for Real. He did make huge mistakes at Liverpool. One final point remember Alberto Aquilani ?? Totally useless.

1. Balotelli (Unprofessional and just..very bad)
2. Konchesky, Poulsen, Lambert, Benteke, Borini, Asaidi, Caroll, Ngog, Moreno, Karius, El Zhar, Downing.
Nothing pre 2010 then 😅😅
Just show how much we improved .rest of the players were ok but not liverpool players .looking at team now we think wow we changed massively .we got decent money back from Carroll i wont complain we gave him loan for 2 season i think 5 million each season then sold him for 20 pluss million .with his money we bought sturridge and couthinho cant complain.we ripped palace for benteke

Benitez made some mad decisions, like spending a whopping 18m on Glen Johnson and letting Arbeloa leave for 5m, or making Xabi Alonso feel unwanted so that we ended up with Aquilani, who was himself a Plan B for Gareth Barry. And then refusing to play Keane as a striker, almost out of protest, even though Keane had over 100 PL goals. And then we had to watch El Zahr and N'Gog replace Torres late in games.
Phil babb, salif diao, le tallec, traore, cole, ngog, kozma...were all lucky to play for liverpool.

I actually thought Jovanovic had something about him. Good runner at defences, kept the ball well then Hodgson just dropped him and you never saw him again. He was better than Poulsen and Markovic and the likes.
Someone mentioned Igor Biscan but his career at Liverpool went on an upward curve when Benitez joined.
Karius has to be up there, Salif Diao was awful too but did do some good stuff when Benitez came. But he was another who Houllier hyped and was no where near the expected level.

Djimi Traore (the worst player I've ever seen playing for anyone in top 2 or 3 divisions), Igor Biscan, Alberto Moreno. Robbie Keane should not be on the list.

A lot of these players went to other leagues and became better players. Aspas was scoring practically every game. Not everyone can play the LFC way but that doesn't mean they're bad.

I remember Colin Irwin and Richard Money from the early '80's.

I remmember reading a book by Bob Paisley listing some of the best players ever to put on a red shirt, when it came to Mark Lawrenson, he revealed that Liverpool tried to sign him in 1977(when Lawrenson would have been 19), but were outbid by Brighton(thats right Brighton), Liverpool offered £75 000, and Brighton offered £100 000. Four years later, they paid a record(at that time), £900 000 for him. Just think about that, the club would have had Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson in the squad, like you say Irwin and Money hardly set the place alight, and in the 1980/81 season thet suffered from a lot of injuries, particularly in defence and midfield, in hindsight, not a good decision.

Whats funny here is that some of these players do more than henderson on the pitch. Hes blessed to be in the world class team he is in as if not he would still be getting slated bit because the teams that good around him he gets away with running 100 miles a game without making a tackle. He is capable of brilliant passes at times and the odd goal but he doesn't do it enough for his position. That's why he a 2nd captain in history not to get a ballon dor after a champions league win as he doesn't do much on the pitch. Lives off the teams accomplishments
